Thermador is built-in equipment for kitchens designed around it, and that is the single most useful thing to understand before booking any repair. The faults themselves are ordinary — igniters, sensors, fans, pumps, seals — but the appliance is part of the room, and a technician who has not planned for that will spend the visit learning it.

Check the Warranty Before You Pay Anyone
On premium equipment this is worth ten minutes before you call anybody. Manufacturers commonly cover specific major components for far longer than the general term — sealed-system refrigeration parts are the standard example — and premium ranges sometimes carry extended terms of their own. The terms vary by model, by year of manufacture and by whether the appliance was registered.
Find the documents, note the installation date, and read what is actually covered. A sealed-system fault inside its term is a manufacturer conversation, not ours. A fan, a sensor, an igniter, a pump or a hinge is almost certainly not covered beyond the first year, and an independent repair is the practical route. We will say plainly if a fault looks like it falls in the covered category, because it saves you money and costs us nothing but the visit.

Built-In Refrigeration Behaves Differently
A refrigeration column is a tall, narrow cabinet fitted flush into joinery, and it has to reject its heat through a very small opening. That geometry drives a large share of the faults we see on this class of equipment, and it is why the first thing a good diagnosis checks is not the compressor.
- Condenser condition and clearance. A furred condenser in a tight opening cannot shed heat, so the machine runs longer and eventually cannot hold temperature at all
- Grille and vent obstruction. Joinery, plinths and toe-kicks get modified over the years, and an airway that was adequate at installation may not be now
- Fans. Condenser and evaporator fans matter more here than on a freestanding fridge, because there is no margin in the design
- Defrost and drainage. A stalled defrost ices the evaporator and closes the airflow, and the melt water then finds the wrong route
- Sensors. Columns run multiple thermistors, and one reading a few degrees off produces behaviour that looks structural
- Door alignment. Heavy panel-ready doors on tall cabinets drop over time, and a door that no longer pulls itself square lets humid air in continuously

Professional Cooking: Igniters, Sensors, Controls
Thermador’s reputation rests largely on its gas burner design, and the good news for owners is that the faults are usually electrical and small rather than structural. A burner that clicks but will not light points at the igniter or the spark module; one that lights but burns unevenly usually needs its ports cleared rather than any part; and a burner that will not hold a low flame is often a valve or an orifice issue rather than anything terminal.
On the oven side the pattern is consistent across makes: temperature complaints are the sensor first, the element or igniter second and the control last. That order matters because it is also cheapest-first, and recalibrating a control to compensate for a drifting sensor simply hides the fault. Ovens are worth measuring with an independent thermometer through a full cycle before anyone adjusts anything.
One boundary worth stating: we diagnose and repair the appliance. Work on the gas supply itself — the line, the shut-off, the connection to the building — belongs to a licensed gas fitter or plumber, and if the fault turns out to sit there we will tell you rather than work around it. If you smell gas, shut the supply off and call your utility before anything else.

Two honest caveats about applying those figures to premium built-in equipment. Parts for a low-volume model cost more than parts for a mass-market one, so the component side can sit above our medians. And access on a genuine built-in adds labour that a freestanding machine does not — a column that has to come out of joinery is simply a longer job. What does not change is the method: the fault is named and the total quoted before anything is ordered.
Repair or Replace
On built-in equipment this question answers differently from a freestanding machine, and usually in favour of repair. Replacing a column or a wall oven means matching an opening, a panel and a service position that the kitchen was designed around — so a replacement is a joinery project as well as an appliance purchase, and a repair that would be marginal on a freestanding fridge is comfortably worthwhile here.
Three questions still decide it. Is the part available for this specific model, which on low-volume premium equipment is the real constraint rather than age. What class of fault is it — airflow, sensors, igniters, pumps and seals are ordinary work at any age, sealed-system refrigeration on a machine past its published life expectancy is the genuine exception. What a Diagnosis Involves
The model number recorded so the parts list is the right one; the installation assessed before anything is moved, since a flush-fitted column or a range in a tight surround has to come out in a particular order; any stored fault history read rather than cleared; the symptom reproduced where possible; then the measurements — sensor resistance against specification, element and igniter continuity, spark module output, pump windings and supply voltage, heat rejection and airflow, and achieved oven temperature against set point with an independent instrument; the mechanical parts checked by hand, including doors, hinges and seals; and part availability confirmed for your model before anything is agreed.
You get the fault named, the part named, availability confirmed and the total quoted before anything is ordered, with the $99 coming off it on approval.
Maintenance That Matters on These Machines
- Condenser twice a year at minimum on built-in refrigeration, and more often in a tight opening or a dusty kitchen
- Keep the grille and toe-kick airway clear, and check nothing has been added to the joinery that blocks it
- Burner ports cleaned when a flame looks uneven; boil-over residue is the usual cause and it needs no parts
- Dishwasher filter monthly, plus a descaling cycle every few months in hard water
- Door seals wiped on refrigeration and ovens alike; residue on a sealing face holds a door fractionally open
- Hinges watched on heavy doors, because a dropped door is the start of several other complaints
Before the Visit: Five Minutes That Save an Hour
- Find the rating plate and photograph it. On columns it is usually inside the compartment on a side wall; on ranges behind the storage drawer or on the frame; on wall ovens on the frame behind the door
- Photograph the installation too — the surround, the plinth, the grille, how much clearance there is. It tells a technician what to bring
- Clear the working space in front of the appliance and, for a column, in the cabinet above or beside it if there is access there
- Write down the sequence of events: when it started, whether it faded over days or failed in a morning, whether anything was done to the kitchen recently
- Note any code exactly as it appears rather than paraphrasing it
- Leave the settings alone, so the appliance is behaving as it was when it failed
The photograph of the installation is the item people skip and the one that helps most. A column fitted flush with a stone surround and a fixed plinth is a different proposition from one in a standard opening, and knowing that in advance is what makes the difference between a planned visit and an exploratory one.
Recent Kitchen Work Is Worth Mentioning
A surprising number of premium-appliance faults date from work done nearby rather than from the appliance ageing. New flooring laid over the feet of a machine changes its levelling and can block the airway underneath. A rebuilt plinth or a new toe-kick can close a ventilation gap that the refrigeration was relying on. Cabinetry refitted around a column can leave it fractionally out of square, which loads the door and its hinges unevenly.
Plumbing and electrical work counts too. A dishwasher pushed back after a pipe repair often has its drain hose crushed or its high loop lost. A machine on a circuit that was reworked may have lost one leg of its supply. And a water filter changed with the wrong part is a common cause of leaks that appear a week later rather than immediately.
So if anything has been done in that kitchen in the last few months — flooring, joinery, plumbing, electrics, a new disposal — say so when you book. It is often the whole diagnosis, and it is information no measurement can recover.
