Quick Answer: Why Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling?
Before anything else, put a thermometer in both compartments and note which one is wrong. That single fact splits the diagnosis in half and it decides whether you are looking at an ordinary repair or the expensive one.
- Freezer cold, fridge warm: air movement or defrost. The most common call we take, and it is not the compressor
- Both compartments warm, but the machine is running: condenser coils, condenser fan, or the sealed system
- Silent and warm: start relay, thermostat or compressor — check the outlet and the breaker first, since it costs nothing

Refrigerators are the appliance people replace soonest and repair least, and the reason is that a warm fridge feels terminal. It usually is not: nearly two thirds of our refrigeration repairs finish under $400, and the faults that cause a warm cabinet are mostly fans, drains and heaters rather than anything sealed.

First: Protect the Food, Then Diagnose
- Keep the doors shut. Every opening resets whatever cold is left
- Move what matters into the freezer if the freezer is still cold, or into a cooler with ice
- Do not turn the dial colder. A machine that cannot reach temperature will not reach a lower one, and on some models it just runs the compressor longer
- Check the outlet and the breaker. A GFCI outlet tripped by something else on the circuit is a genuinely common cause of a silent fridge
- Read both compartments with a thermometer, not the display. Fresh food wants about 38°F and the freezer 0°F
The Split That Decides Everything

The first row is the one to hope for and the one we see most. A cold freezer proves the machine is still making cold, so nothing in the sealed system has failed — the problem is getting that cold into the fresh-food compartment, which is airflow rather than refrigeration.
The Five Causes, in the Order We Find Them
1. Condenser coils packed with dust
The coils are the surface whose entire job is to dump heat out of the machine. Dust and pet hair act as insulation on them, so the compressor runs longer and longer for the same cooling, and on a hot day it cannot keep up. Pull the grille at the bottom, or look at the back on older designs, and shine a light: if the coils are furred grey, that is your fault. A vacuum and a coil brush fixes it and costs nothing, and it is the single most common thing we find on a fridge that “just stopped keeping up”.
2. Evaporator fan
Behind the freezer’s rear panel sits a fan that blows cold air over the evaporator and through a duct into the fresh-food section. When it stops, the freezer stays cold because it is next to the cold, and the fridge warms up because nothing is moving air to it. Open the freezer and listen: on most machines you can hear the fan, and its silence with a cold freezer is close to a diagnosis on its own.
3. Defrost system
Every frost-free refrigerator melts the frost off its evaporator several times a day with a small heater. When that heater, its thermostat or its control fails, ice builds on the evaporator until air can no longer pass through it. The signature is a fridge that gets gradually worse over a week or two, sometimes with frost visible at the back wall of the freezer and water appearing under the crisper drawers.
4. Thermistors and control
The machine decides when to cool based on what its sensors report. A thermistor reading a few degrees off makes a healthy refrigerator behave badly, and it is inexpensive to replace. This is the cause that most often looks like something worse, because nothing is visibly wrong and nothing is noisy.
5. The sealed system
Compressor, condenser, evaporator and the refrigerant between them. A leak or a restriction shows up as a machine that runs constantly and loses ground over days rather than failing suddenly. This is the expensive class: it is the top tenth of our refrigeration book, above $624, and on a machine past its published life expectancy of 9 to 13 years it is the point where replacement enters the conversation. Where Each Layout Tends to Fail
The physical arrangement of the two compartments changes which fault is likely, because it changes where the evaporator sits and how far the cold air has to travel.

Two practical consequences. On a built-in or counter-depth machine, check the clearance and the condenser before assuming anything electrical — heat that cannot escape looks exactly like weak cooling. And on any bottom-freezer design, a warm fresh-food section with a cold freezer is close to expected behaviour when the fan or damper is at fault, because gravity is working against you.
What to Do While You Wait for the Visit
- Clean the condenser coils. The one job worth doing yourself: unplug the machine, pull the lower grille, vacuum and brush the coils, plug it back in. If the fridge recovers over the next day, that was the fault
- Pull the shelves back an inch from the rear wall and clear anything pressed against the vents
- Check the gaskets with a sheet of paper: shut it in the door and pull. If it slides out with no drag, the seal at that point is not holding
- Look for frost at the back wall of the freezer, and for water under the crisper drawers. Both point at defrost
- Note the timeline. Sudden failure and a slow fade over two weeks are different faults, and telling us which it was genuinely narrows the list
- Leave the settings alone otherwise, so the technician sees the machine behaving as it was when it failed
If the freezer has iced into a block, a full defrost with the doors open for several hours will make the fridge cool again for a few days. Do it if you need the time, but book the visit anyway: the ice returns because the defrost fault is still there.

That distribution is the honest context for any quote you are holding. Fans, defrost heaters, thermistors and control boards sit inside the middle half. If a quote is well above it, ask which part and which system, because the answer tells you whether you are in the ordinary band or the sealed-system one. Things That Look Like a Fault and Are Not
- A new fridge taking a day to come down. Pulling a warm cabinet to temperature takes many hours, and longer if it is full
- Warm spots after a big shop. A load of room-temperature groceries raises the whole cabinet until the machine catches up
- Vents blocked by packing. Boxes pressed against the rear vents starve the fresh-food section of cold air, which reads exactly like a fan fault
- A door left ajar by a bottle. Humid air pouring in makes ice, and ice makes the airflow worse
- Summer in a garage. A fridge in an unconditioned space runs a permanently harder duty cycle and struggles on the hottest days
- Setting the dial colder than needed. Colder costs run time and preserves nothing further; 38°F and 0°F is the target

What a Proper Diagnosis Checks
So you can judge the visit rather than take it on trust: both compartments read against their set points with an instrument; the evaporator inspected behind the rear panel for a coat of ice, which is what stalled defrost looks like; the evaporator fan tested with the door switch defeated; defrost heater and thermostat measured rather than assumed; thermistor resistance checked cold; condenser condition and clearance inspected; the condenser fan confirmed running; and only then the compressor’s draw and start behaviour. Door seals and hinge alignment last, because a door that no longer pulls itself square explains a surprising number of complaints.
You get the fault named, the part named, availability confirmed and the total before anything is ordered. The $99 comes off that total when you approve the work.
