How Old Is Your Appliance? Read the Plate, Not the Receipt
Every figure on this page is useless until you know where your own appliance sits on the curve, and most households do not, because the purchase receipt is long gone and the unit came with the house.
The answer is on the rating plate. On a refrigerator it is usually inside on a side wall or behind the crisper drawers; on a washer or dryer around the door opening or on the back panel; on a dishwasher along the edge of the door; on a range on the frame behind the storage drawer or inside the oven door. Photograph it rather than copying it out, because a single mistaken character sends the wrong part later.
The serial number encodes the build date on most brands, and the encoding is manufacturer specific rather than universal. Some use a letter for the year and a letter for the month, some put a two-digit year in the middle, some encode a week number. Because the schemes differ, the reliable route is to give the model and serial to a technician or to look up that manufacturer’s scheme rather than guessing from the digits.
Two shortcuts when the plate is unreadable. The date stamped on the back of the appliance during manufacture is often legible when the serial is not. And on a unit that came with a house, the property records or the previous owner’s kitchen remodel date usually put it within a year or two, which is precise enough for the decisions on this page.
Age matters because it changes the arithmetic rather than the diagnosis. The same failed control board is worth fixing at six years and is a poor investment at sixteen, and knowing which side of that line you are on is the whole point of dating the machine.
What Actually Decides How Long Yours Lasts
The baselines above are averages across enormous populations. What moves a particular appliance well above or well below its baseline is a short list, and three of the four are within your control.
Duty cycle. The single biggest factor. An appliance is engineered around an assumed number of uses, and a household of six running ten or twelve laundry loads a week reaches the same wear in three years that a single-person household takes ten to accumulate. A domestic machine in a short-term rental or a small business is outside its design duty entirely, which is why it fails years early and why most warranties exclude commercial use.
Installation. A washer that was never levelled walks and wears its bearings and suspension. A dryer on an over-long duct runs hot and eats thermal fuses. A refrigerator with no clearance to shed heat runs its compressor far longer than it should. None of these are faults on day one, and all of them shorten life measurably from day one.
Water and air. Covered in the penalty sections above. Scale on a heating element and dust on a condenser both make a machine work harder for the same result, and harder means shorter.
Maintenance actually performed. Not maintenance intended. Condenser coils vacuumed twice a year, dryer ducts cleaned, dishwasher filters rinsed monthly, washer hoses replaced on a five-year schedule. Each is minor and unglamorous, and together they are the difference between the top and bottom of the ranges on this page.
What is not on the list is brand, at least not to the degree people expect. Brand shifts the average by a year or two in either direction. Duty cycle and installation shift an individual appliance by considerably more.

Two patterns are worth noticing across that table. The widest published range belongs to the washing machine, five to fifteen years, and it is decided almost entirely by one part: the drum bearing and the seal in front of it. The narrowest belongs to the dryer, a single figure of thirteen, and what moves it either way is not the machine at all but the duct behind it, which the same chart gives five years in plastic and twenty in steel.
