Of everything on a gas range, the cooktop burners are the part most often fixed without any parts at all — because what stops them is usually what boiled over onto them last week. It is worth twenty minutes and a paperclip before booking anyone.

One Burner or All of Them

This single question splits the diagnosis cleanly, and it is worth answering deliberately by trying every burner in turn rather than assuming.

One burner out. Everything shared — the gas supply, the spark module, the power — is proven working by the burners that do light. So the fault is in that burner’s own hardware: blocked ports, a cap or grate seated wrongly, a dirty or cracked electrode, or a clogged orifice. Most of that is cleaning.

All burners out. Now the shared parts are suspect. If they all click and none lights, gas is not arriving or is arriving at the wrong pressure. If none of them even clicks, the cooktop has no power — and yes, a gas cooktop needs electricity, which surprises people during a power cut.

The Clean-Out, Step by Step

  1. Turn the burner off and let everything cool completely. Cast-iron grates hold heat far longer than they look
  2. Lift off the grate and the burner cap. Both should come away by hand on almost every range
  3. Look at the ports — the small holes around the burner ring. Boil-over, grease and crumbs block them one at a time, which is why a burner gets patchy before it dies
  4. Clear each port with a paperclip or a stiff brush. Not a toothpick, which snaps off inside, and not a drill bit, which enlarges the hole and changes the flame
  5. Wash the cap and grate with hot soapy water, dry them fully, and look at the cap’s underside for carbon build-up
  6. Wipe the electrode — the small white ceramic pin beside the burner — with a dry cloth. It sparks poorly when coated
  7. Refit the cap squarely. A cap sitting even slightly off centre gives a lopsided flame or none at all, and this is a genuinely common cause
  8. Try it. Then do the same to the other burners while everything is off, because they are heading the same way

That is the whole safe procedure, and it resolves a large share of single-burner complaints. What is not on the list: the orifice, the valve, the regulator and anything under the cooktop surface.

The yellow-flame row is the one not to ignore. A gas burner should burn blue; a persistently yellow or orange flame means the air-to-gas mixture is wrong or something is obstructing it, and that is worth having looked at properly rather than living with. It is also worth distinguishing from the brief orange flicker you get from dust or from a spill burning off, which is harmless.

The Constant Clicking Case

A cooktop that clicks continuously with every knob in the off position is alarming and almost always mundane. The spark system fires when it believes a burner is calling for ignition, and moisture is the usual reason it believes wrongly — a spill that ran under the control panel, an over-enthusiastic wipe-down, or steam from a big pot.

The first thing to try is drying it out. Switch off at the breaker, leave the cooktop alone for a day in a dry room, and try again. A hairdryer on cool, held well back, speeds it up. A surprising share of these fix themselves overnight.

If it still clicks after drying, the causes are a cracked ceramic electrode, a worn switch in a knob, or the spark module itself — and at that point it is a service call rather than a wait. Do not leave a cooktop clicking indefinitely: it is sparking near gas fittings, and the module is not designed to run continuously.

Where the Boundary Is

We diagnose and repair the appliance: electrodes, spark modules, valves, orifices, switches, burners. Work on the gas supply itself — the line, the shut-off, the flexible connector, the regulator, the connection to the building — belongs to a licensed gas fitter or plumber. If the fault sits there, we say so rather than work around it.

Two things override everything else. If you smell gas, do not test anything: shut the supply off if the valve is safely reachable, get people out and call the utility. And if a burner has been leaking unburnt gas because someone left a knob part-open against a blocked port, ventilate the room before doing anything else.

One more that comes up on ranges converted between natural gas and propane: the orifices and sometimes the regulator have to match the fuel. A conversion done incompletely gives exactly these symptoms — poor lighting, yellow flames, burners that will not hold low. Worth mentioning if the appliance was ever moved between fuels. What Blocks a Burner in the First Place

  • Boil-over. Starchy water from pasta or rice is the worst: it dries into the ports as a hard glaze rather than washing off
  • Grease from frying, which carbonises on the cap’s underside and narrows the ports gradually
  • Crumbs and salt swept across the cooktop and into the ring while wiping
  • Aggressive cleaning, which drives debris into the ports instead of lifting it out. Lift the cap off and clean underneath rather than scrubbing around it
  • Oversized pans, which push flame and heat sideways onto the electrode and cook it
  • Foil or a liner under the grates, which traps heat where the design did not intend it and is worth removing

The pattern behind all six: a burner rarely fails suddenly. It gets patchy — one dead spot in the ring, then two — and eventually will not light at all. Which means the fix is nearly always cheaper if it happens at the patchy stage, and it also means the other burners on that cooktop are usually a few months behind the one that failed.

A Habit That Prevents Most of This

Once a month, with everything cold, lift the caps and grates off, wash them, dry them and put them back squarely. Five minutes for a whole cooktop. It is unglamorous and it is the difference between burners that light on the first click for a decade and burners that need a service call every couple of years.

Two smaller ones. Wipe a boil-over while it is still soft rather than after it has baked on, because a fresh spill comes off with a cloth and a dried one has to be picked out of the ports. And keep pans roughly matched to the burner, since flame licking up the sides of an oversized pot is heat going into the cooktop surface and the electrode rather than into the food.

What a Proper Diagnosis Involves

Every burner tried in turn to establish whether the fault is shared or local; the breaker confirmed, because a gas cooktop needs power to spark; the ports, caps and grates inspected and cleared; each electrode checked for cracking and for correct gap; the spark module’s output tested; the knob switches tested, since a worn switch produces both no-spark and constant-spark faults; the valves and orifices checked for obstruction and for the right fuel; flame quality assessed across the whole ring rather than at a glance; flame sensing checked where fitted; and the supply pressure judged, with anything upstream of the appliance referred to a licensed fitter.
