\nInterNACHI’s appliances chart gives a dryer 13 years. What makes that chart unusually useful here is that it also prices the ductwork separately, and the two lines together explain most of what we see in the field.

Read those first three rows together. A plastic vent has a shorter published life than most people’s dogs, and when it fails it does not fail visibly: it sags between joists, collects lint in the sag, and slowly strangles the machine. That is why we treat the duct as part of the dryer rather than as plumbing.

Nearly eight in ten dryer repairs finish under $400, and that shape is the argument for repairing rather than replacing almost any dryer that is still turning. The exception is the last band, and the last band is mostly self-inflicted: it is what a restricted duct does to a machine over a couple of years.
\n\nHow a Vent Kills a Dryer
\nA dryer works by pushing heated air through the load and out of the house. When the duct is restricted, that air cannot leave, so three things happen in sequence.

- Cycle times grow. The complaint is always the same: it needs two cycles to dry a normal load. Nothing is broken yet \n
- The heat path runs hotter. With less air moving over it, the element or burner assembly reaches higher temperatures, and the thermal limiter starts cutting in to protect it \n
- Parts start failing in pairs. A blown thermal fuse with a failed element behind it, or a burnt terminal block, is the signature of months of overheating rather than of age \n
That is the mechanism behind the entire top band of our price book. It is also completely preventable, and the test costs nothing: run the dryer on high heat and hold a hand at the outside vent hood. Strong warm air means the duct is clear and the machine is the suspect. Weak air means the duct is the problem and no internal part will fix it.

\n\nGas or Electric: Does It Change the Lifespan?
\nNot the years, but it changes which parts you buy along the way. An electric dryer heats with an element and fails there: element, thermostats, thermal fuse, terminal block. A gas dryer heats with a burner, and its failures are the igniter, the flame sensor and the gas valve coils, which are cheaper individually but arrive as a set often enough that the totals even out.
\nWhat genuinely differs is the fault you cannot see. On a gas machine an airflow restriction risks incomplete combustion as well as overheating, which is a reason to take a slow gas dryer seriously rather than living with it. One rule that overrides the table: never replace a dryer without first proving the duct is clear. \n\nHow to Get Past Thirteen Years

- Clean the lint screen every load, and wash it with soap and water twice a year: fabric-softener residue makes a film that a dry brush will not remove \n
- Have the full duct run cleaned annually, or more often with a long run, bends or a rooftop termination \n
- Replace flexible plastic duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal. The published five years against twenty is the whole argument \n
- Keep the run short and the bends few. Every elbow costs you the equivalent of several feet of straight duct \n
- Check the outside hood. Flaps stick shut, birds nest in them, and paint jobs seal them closed more often than anyone admits \n
- Do not dry one heavy item alone repeatedly: it runs long cycles at full heat with little airflow through the load \n
- Vacuum behind and under the machine yearly. Lint that escapes the screen settles on the motor and the heat path \n
Signs the Machine Is Genuinely Done
\nThese are the ones where the answer is a new dryer rather than a part.

- A drum that has scored the cabinet, or a bearing that has worn its housing rather than just its roller \n
- Rust through the drum or the base pan, which means water has been sitting somewhere it should not \n
- A burnt terminal block or scorched wiring at the heat path, particularly if it has happened twice \n
- Two or more separate failures within a year on a machine past twelve, with the duct already proved clear \n
- A cabinet that has been apart several times: plastic mounts and clips do not survive endless disassembly \n
The Noises, and What Each One Costs
\nA dryer tells you what is wrong before it stops working, and the sound is specific enough to price roughly over the phone.

- A rhythmic squeal that follows drum speed is the idler pulley or the drum rollers, and it sits in the cheaper half of the book. Left alone it takes the belt with it \n
- A deep rumble that grows over months is the rear drum bearing or the support glides, which is the one dryer fault that can approach washer-bearing money \n
- A rattle only at start and stop is usually something in the blower housing: a coin, a button, a hairpin. Cheap, and worth doing before it chews the blower wheel \n
- A thumping in time with the drum points at a flat spot on a roller or a seam in the belt \n
- A scraping that changes when you press on the cabinet means the drum is riding on something it should not be, and that is the noise not to ignore, because it scores the drum \n

\nVentless machines change the arithmetic of this page in one specific way: there is no duct to restrict, so the failure mode that ends most vented dryers early does not exist. What replaces it is a closed refrigeration circuit and a condenser that has to be kept clean, which is a maintenance job rather than an installation one.
\nThey dry more slowly and cost more to buy, and the repair picture is different again: the sealed circuit puts a heat-pump dryer closer to a refrigerator in service terms, with the same distinction between ordinary parts and sealed-system work.
