Two Cycles to Dry: Start Outside, Not at the Machine
The complaint arrives as a machine fault. The load comes out damp, the household runs a second cycle as a matter of routine, and after a few months somebody decides the dryer is worn out. In the large majority of those calls the dryer is fine and the duct is choked.
A dryer does not evaporate water by heating alone. It heats air, passes it through the load, and carries the moisture out of the house. If the air cannot leave, the moisture stays and the load stays damp no matter how hot the element gets. The test. Start a timed cycle on high heat, walk outside, and put your hand at the vent hood. Strong warm air moving briskly means the duct is clear. A flap held permanently open by lint, painted shut, or crushed by a lawnmower is a restriction in its own right.

Garages, Crawl Spaces and Outbuildings

Electric Dryer, Completely Dead or Turning Without Heat
An electric dryer runs on 240 volts delivered as two 120-volt legs. Motor, drum and lights run on one leg; the heating element needs both. That single fact explains the symptom that confuses people most.
Drum turns, lights work, no heat at all. Before assuming the element has failed, consider that one leg of the supply may be gone: a tripped half of a double breaker, or a loose connection at the outlet or the terminal block. The machine looks alive because the leg that runs the motor is fine. This is a common and cheap discovery, and it is worth checking the breaker properly, off and firmly back on, before booking.
Completely dead. Both legs, the outlet, or the cord. Older three-prong installations and the terminal block behind the access panel are where connections loosen and burn over time, and a scorched terminal block is a repair in itself.
Heats weakly. Elements can fail partially, with a section of coil broken, and the machine then produces some heat but never enough. Combined with a marginal duct, this is the classic two-cycles-to-dry situation with two causes at once.

Noise: What Each Kind Means
Dryers are simple mechanically, and the noises map fairly cleanly onto parts.
A rhythmic squeal or chirp that follows drum rotation is usually the drum rollers or the idler pulley. Both are cheap, both wear, and a roller that seizes will eventually take the belt with it.
A thump on every rotation, or a drum that will not turn at all while the motor hums, is the belt. A broken belt is a common and inexpensive repair.

Scrub it with warm soapy water and a soft brush a few times a year and let it dry fully before it goes back.
The second is the lint that gets past the screen and settles inside the cabinet, on the heater housing and around the blower. Every machine passes some, and after years it accumulates against exactly the hot components you would least want it near.
