The Failure Sequence Never Varies

A dryer does not dry clothes by heating them. It dries them by moving a large volume of warm air through the drum, picking up moisture and carrying it outside. Heat is only half the job, and the half that fails first is almost always the air.

The sequence is the same in every house we visit. Lint gets past the filter, because filters are good rather than perfect, and settles in the duct where the air slows down. The duct narrows. The machine now has to push the same air through a smaller hole, so less moisture leaves per minute, so clothes need a little longer. Nobody notices the first stage, because ten extra minutes is not a fault, it is a Tuesday.

Then the load needs two cycles. Then the dryer heats, runs for twenty minutes and cuts out, because the high-limit thermostat is doing exactly what it was designed to do: sensing that heat is not being carried away and shutting the element down before something worse happens. Then the thermal fuse, which is a one-shot safety device with no reset, blows for the same reason, and the dryer tumbles cold and never heats again.

At that point the owner calls and asks for a heating element. Fitting one without clearing the duct puts a new part into the same restricted system, and the new part fails on the same schedule as the old one. Why the Roof Cap Is the Venice Answer

The attic is hot, and hot ducts sag. Flexible ducting run across an attic in Florida heat, unsupported between joists, develops low spots. Moisture-laden air condenses at those low spots, damp lint sticks there rather than travelling on, and a soft blockage forms that does not clear itself. That is the single most common thing we pull out of Venice attics.

Nobody looks at a roof cap. It is on a roof. It has a flap that is supposed to open under airflow and close when the dryer stops, keeping weather and wildlife out. Flaps stick shut with lint and paint, screens fitted by well-meaning installers clog solid, and on this coast the cavity behind a stuck flap makes a very attractive nest site. A cap that has stopped opening properly turns the whole duct into a dead end, and the homeowner has no way of knowing, because the only symptom is clothes that take longer.

In a seasonal house all of this compounds quietly. Five months with no airflow through the duct is five months for damp lint to settle and set, and for a nest to be built without interruption. The Closed Season and the Dryer

The dryer suffers less from being shut up than the dishwasher or the washer, because it does not hold water. But it is not immune, and two things are worth knowing.

Lint left in the machine and the duct over a closed summer does not stay loose and fluffy. Florida humidity gets into an unconditioned garage or an attic run, damp lint mats down, and what was a light coating in April is a compacted layer in November. That is why the first heated cycle of the season is so often the one that trips the thermal fuse: the restriction that was tolerable before the house closed is no longer tolerable after it.

The other is the drum and the rollers. A drum resting on the same point of its support rollers for five months can develop a flat spot on the roller surface, which produces a thumping that goes away after a few cycles as the roller wears back round, or does not, in which case the rollers are due anyway. A thump for the first two loads of the season is worth noticing but not worth panicking about.

Gas, Propane and Electric

Both kinds of dryer are common here, and the difference matters for diagnosis rather than for the airflow story, which is identical.

When it tumbles but does not heat, the candidates are the element itself, the thermal fuse, the high-limit thermostat, the cycling thermostat, or one leg of the 240 volt supply having been lost, which is worth mentioning because a dryer running on one leg will tumble happily and never heat. That last one is a breaker or a connection rather than an appliance fault, and it is a genuinely common finding.

A gas dryer here usually runs on propane rather than mains gas, because natural gas distribution in this part of the coast is patchy. The heat comes from a burner lit by a hot surface igniter under the control of a flame sensor and two gas valve coils. The classic failure is an igniter that still glows but no longer draws enough current, or coils that have weakened, and the symptom is a burner that lights late, cycles oddly, or never lights while the drum turns normally. A propane conversion that was done poorly, or a regulator issue, produces similar behaviour, which is why we check the supply side as well as the appliance.

Squealing or Grinding

Drum rollers, the idler pulley or the rear bearing. A squeal that appears in the first loads after a closed season and fades is often a flat spot on a roller wearing back round. A squeal that stays, or a grind, means the parts are due.

Thumping Every Rotation

A worn roller with a genuine flat, a failing idler, or something caught between the drum and the bulkhead. It is a mechanical job at the cheaper end of the range and it is worth doing before the belt or the bearing takes the consequences.

Drum Turns But the Belt Broke

If the motor hums and the drum does not move at all, the belt has usually gone. It is a common part and a same-visit repair on most machines, and while it is apart is the sensible moment to deal with rollers that are close to due.

Auto-Dry Leaves Clothes Damp or Over-Dries

The moisture sensor in the drum, usually two metal strips that read the conductivity of the load. Residue from over-dosed detergent coats them and they read wet clothes as dry. Cleaning them with a little rubbing alcohol is a five-minute job and it is worth doing before any part is ordered.

Burning Smell

Stop the machine. Lint that has reached the heating element or the burner area is the usual cause, and it is the one dryer symptom that is genuinely urgent rather than merely annoying. Do not run it again to see whether the smell comes back.

Dead Panel After the Season

Outlet, breaker, then the control board. Garage laundries run hot for half the year and heat is hard on electronics, so a board failure on a machine that lives in a Venice garage is less surprising than it would be on one in a conditioned closet.

The Room Is Part of the System

One thing that gets missed constantly, because it is not part of the appliance at all: a dryer has to take air from somewhere. Getting More Years Out of a Dryer Here

Clean the lint filter every load, and once a year wash it in warm soapy water and dry it. Fabric softener sheets leave an invisible film on the mesh that restricts airflow while the filter still looks clean, and water sitting on the mesh rather than running through it is the test.
