A dishwasher is designed around water arriving hot. Detergent enzymes and the grease-cutting chemistry both depend on temperature, and a cycle that starts with a cold fill spends part of its length simply catching up, if the machine has a heater, or never gets there at all if it does not. In a house where the kitchen sits a long way from the water heater, the water standing in that pipe run has cooled to room temperature, and the first fill takes all of it.
The fix costs nothing: run the kitchen tap until the water is genuinely hot, then start the cycle. The difference is frequently obvious on the first load, and it is the reason a machine that “used to clean better” often has nothing wrong with it. A recirculating hot water system, where one is fitted, removes the problem entirely, and it is worth confirming yours is actually running rather than switched off at some point and forgotten.
Two related notes. Households that run the dishwasher overnight on a delay start lose this benefit unless the system recirculates, because the pipe has cooled again by the time the cycle begins. Cleans Badly, and Nothing Is Broken

Loading. Anything stopping a spray arm from rotating leaves a whole rack unwashed. Tall items in the wrong place, a tray lying flat, a bowl nested over a smaller one. Spin both arms by hand with the racks loaded, and if either catches, the load is the problem.
Detergent age and type. Dishwasher detergent loses effectiveness after a few months once opened, and buying in bulk means a box that has sat in a humid utility room for a year is not doing its job.
The filter and the spray arms. The filter as above; the arms because their jets narrow with deposit over years. Take them out, hold them against the light, and clear blocked holes with a piece of wire. As holes close the top rack suffers first, being furthest from the pump.
Only once those are ruled out do we look at the wash pump, the diverter and the water level sensor, which are the genuine mechanical causes and less common than any of the above.
Dishes Come Out Wet
Poor drying generates a lot of calls and is usually not a fault.
Many modern dishwashers, including most of the quieter premium models, dry by condensation rather than with a heating element: the tub is heated during the final rinse and moisture condenses on the cooler stainless walls and drains away. That design depends entirely on rinse aid to make water sheet off dishes rather than bead, and without it the drying simply does not work. Households that stopped using rinse aid, or that use an all-in-one tablet and assume it is covered, are the usual source of this complaint.
Plastics stay wet on condensation-drying machines regardless, because plastic does not hold enough heat to evaporate the film left on it. That is physics rather than a defect.
Opening the door a few inches at the end of the cycle lets the steam out and finishes the job, and some machines do this automatically. If the machine does have a heating element and nothing is drying while the water never seems hot either, the element or its circuit is worth checking.
Cloudy Glassware: Film or Etching
Two different problems look identical from across the kitchen, and the difference decides whether anything can be done at all.
Film is mineral deposit sitting on the surface of the glass, left by hard water and by detergent that reacted with minerals instead of food. Etching is microscopic damage to the glass itself, caused over time by soft water combined with too much detergent and high heat. Film comes off. Etching does not, and no repair, additive or replacement machine reverses it.
The test takes five minutes. Soak a cloudy glass in white vinegar for a few minutes. Clear afterwards means film, which responds to consistent rinse aid, an appropriate detergent and a monthly cleaner cycle. Still cloudy means etching, and the only useful move is prevention: reduce the detergent dose, avoid the hottest cycles for glassware, and accept that already-etched pieces stay that way.
This matters more here than it sounds, because good glassware is exactly what gets put through these machines and etching is not recoverable. If you are unsure which you have, do the vinegar test before changing anything about how the machine is run, since the two problems call for opposite corrections.
Second Dishwashers and Cycle Length
Kitchens here frequently have two dishwashers, or a second machine in a butler pantry or bar area, and the second one fails from disuse rather than wear. Seals dry out, the sump develops a smell, and water standing in the line goes stale, so the first cycle after a long gap is when a fault appears. Running the machine on a short cycle once a month even when there is nothing much to wash prevents nearly all of that.
Cycle length also confuses people. An efficient modern machine can run two and a half or three hours, because low water and energy use are achieved by washing longer at lower temperature. That is not a fault and it is not a weak pump. A quiet premium machine running a long normal cycle is behaving exactly as designed, and the auto or sensor cycles vary their length deliberately according to how dirty the load is.
What is worth attention is a cycle that never ends at all, or one that stops early with dirty dishes. Both usually produce an error code, and noting exactly what the machine shows, including blink patterns, means we can often identify the component before the visit.
Noise, and What Each Kind Means
Premium dishwashers are very quiet, which means a machine that used to be inaudible and is now noticeable has changed rather than aged.
A rattle or knocking during the wash is most often a loose item touching a spray arm, or cutlery that has slipped through the basket and is being struck on each rotation. Free to fix, and worth checking, because a loose item can damage an arm.
A grinding or crunching that starts and stops points at something hard in the sump: a fragment of glass, a bone chip, a fruit stone. That belongs in the filter section, and leaving it risks the pump.
A humming with no water movement is a wash pump trying and failing, and a rising whine is usually the drain pump. Both are ordinary parts and both are worth diagnosing, because a machine not moving water properly is also not cleaning.
