Three Free Checks Before You Book Anyone
One: the shut-off. Every refrigerator ice maker has a way of telling itself to stop, either a wire bail arm that lifts when the bin is full, an infrared beam, or a switch on the control panel. A bail arm gets knocked up by a bag of frozen food and stays there, and the household concludes the ice maker has died. If yours has an arm, make sure it is down. If it uses a beam, make sure nothing is in the way. If it has a switch, make sure it is on. This is the single most common reason we are called out to a working ice maker.
Two: the water filter. Filters are rated in gallons as well as months, and a large household reaches the gallon figure long before the calendar one. A spent filter starves the ice maker before it noticeably slows the drinking water, so ice is always the first symptom. Change it and note the date on the housing.
Three: the fill tube. Water reaches the mould through a small tube at the back of the freezer compartment. If a few drops are left in it after a fill and the freezer runs very cold, they freeze, and the next fill meets a plug of ice and either backs up or never arrives. The tell is ice visible at the back of the compartment or spillage down the rear wall. A hair dryer on low, used briefly and carefully, clears it, and the freezer setting usually needs correcting too.
Undercounter Machines Are a Different Appliance
A dedicated ice machine in a bar, a butler pantry or an outdoor kitchen is not a bigger version of a refrigerator ice maker. It runs a large volume of water continuously through an evaporator and a reservoir, and it is designed on the assumption that it will be cleaned on a schedule.
Descaling and sanitising. Manufacturers typically specify this two to four times a year. A machine that has never had it produces less ice, then cloudy or soft ice that will not release cleanly, then fails. This is the single most common cause of a dedicated machine that “is wearing out”, and it is maintenance rather than a repair. If nobody can remember the last descale, that is where we start.
Airflow. These machines reject heat through a grille at the front or the back, and built into a cabinet run with the clearance obstructed they overheat and production collapses, most obviously in summer. A machine that only struggles in hot weather is telling you about its airway rather than its components.
The drain. Undercounter machines drain by gravity or by a small pump, and in a fitted run the drain is out of sight. A blocked or badly sloped drain gives standing water in the bin, ice that will not release, and eventually a wet cabinet base that nobody sees until the finish lifts. On any built-in installation this is worth checking once a year on principle.
And as with every other built-in appliance in these kitchens, replacement means the cabinetry as well as the machine, so repairs that would be marginal on a freestanding unit are usually worth doing.
Ice Production Rates, and What Is Actually Normal
A number of the calls we take are not faults at all but expectations, and the arithmetic is worth knowing before booking anyone.
A typical refrigerator ice maker produces somewhere in the region of three to five pounds of ice a day, in batches of eight to ten cubes, with each batch taking roughly ninety minutes to two hours to freeze and harvest. That is ample for ordinary use and it is not ample for entertaining. A household filling glasses for a dozen people will empty the bin faster than the machine can refill it, and no repair changes that, because the limit is freezing time rather than a component.
Two things do slow production legitimately. A freezer opened frequently loses cold air and lengthens each cycle. And a refrigerator that is struggling generally, with a blocked condenser or grille, produces less ice as an early symptom, often before food temperature is noticeably affected. If the ice slowed and the appliance also seems to run longer than it used to, look at the airway before the ice maker.

Small, Hollow or Slow Cubes
Cubes that have gradually got smaller, then hollow, then insufficient are telling you about water rather than about the module. The gradual profile is itself the diagnosis: a component fails, while a restriction tightens over months.
Work through it in order. The filter first. Then the inlet valve, which has a small orifice that narrows with deposit over years, so the machine takes less water per fill than it was designed for. Then the supply itself, because refrigerator ice makers are designed around a minimum incoming pressure, typically somewhere in the region of twenty to forty pounds per square inch depending on the model, and a partially closed valve or a restricted line will produce exactly this symptom.
On a built-in refrigerator the supply line runs concealed behind cabinetry, which means a kinked or crushed line from a past installation is invisible and can only be found by tracing it. That is worth knowing because it is a fault that no amount of component replacement will fix, and it is one of the reasons we would rather diagnose the water side properly than fit a module and hope.
Cubes That Fuse into a Block
Ice welded into a single slab, with the harvest arm jammed against it, has two ordinary causes.
The first is water trickling past the inlet valve between cycles, usually because deposit is holding the seat fractionally open, so the mould keeps topping up and the cubes bond. If there is also moisture at the back of the compartment or water reaching the floor, that confirms it, and the valve is an ordinary part.
The second is simply not using the ice. Cubes left for weeks sublimate at the surface and re-freeze into a mass, and in a household that uses ice mainly when entertaining that happens reliably between occasions. Emptying the bin every few weeks and letting it refill keeps it loose and deals with the taste problem at the same time, since ice absorbs freezer odours readily.
On a dispenser model the same conditions block the door chute, which looks like a mechanical failure and is usually the ice rather than the appliance.
The Freezer Is Too Cold, and That Is a Real Cause
People set freezers colder than necessary in the belief that colder is safer, and on an ice maker that backfires directly.
The target is around zero degrees Fahrenheit. Pushed well below that, the few drops left in the fill tube after each cycle freeze before the next fill arrives, which is the ice plug described earlier and the most common recurring complaint on a machine that is otherwise healthy. The mould can also freeze the water hard enough that the harvest struggles to release the cubes, which produces jams and, on some designs, a stripped ejector.
Measure rather than trusting the display: a thermometer between packages overnight tells you what the compartment is actually doing, and a several-degree gap between panel and reality is normal on an older machine. If it is running well below zero, bring it up and see whether the ice problem goes with it. That is a free fix and frequently the whole answer.
The opposite case is worth ruling out too. An ice maker will not harvest until the mould reaches its cut-in temperature, so a freezer running warm, a door left ajar, or a garage unit in a cold building where the compressor never starts will simply never produce a cycle.
Dispenser Faults, Which Are Their Own Category
On a refrigerator that dispenses through the door, a good share of what gets reported as an ice maker fault is happening in the door rather than in the freezer.
The chute is the usual culprit. Ice fuses in it during periods of light use, and the flap at the bottom can freeze partly open, which lets warm room air into the chute and frosts the whole assembly. The symptom is a machine that is clearly making ice, because there is some in the bin, while nothing comes out at the door. Clearing the chute and then using the dispenser regularly is genuinely the fix.
The auger motor and the dispenser switch are the paid repairs behind the same symptom. A motor that hums without turning, or a paddle that produces no response at all, points at those, and both are ordinary parts.
Water dispensing has its own short list. Weak flow with normal ice usually means the filter. No water at all while the ice maker still works points at the reservoir line in the door, which can freeze if the fresh-food compartment is running too cold, and that is the same setting problem arriving through a different door.
Outdoor Kitchens and Machines That Sit Idle
Where an ice machine or a beverage refrigerator sits in an outdoor kitchen or a pool house, two extra factors apply and neither is a component fault.
The first is ambient temperature. Outdoor-rated equipment exists precisely because standard indoor machines are not designed for a cabinet that reaches well above room temperature on a summer afternoon, and an indoor unit installed outdoors will underproduce and wear early. If a machine only struggles in hot weather, that is worth establishing before parts are considered.
The second is disuse. A machine that runs hard for a few weekends and then stands for months develops exactly the problems described above: fused ice, stale water in the line, seals drying out, and deposit settling in a reservoir that is not being flushed. Insects also find control housings and airways attractive during a long idle spell, which is a real and well-documented cause of faults on outdoor equipment.
The routine that prevents most of it is simple: run the machine periodically rather than seasonally, empty the bin between occasions, and if it will genuinely stand unused through winter, drain it and shut off its supply rather than leaving water sitting in it.
Leaks in a Fitted Kitchen
Water appearing around a refrigerator or an undercounter machine deserves attention quickly, because in a fitted kitchen with hardwood flooring it does not stay a small problem.
The most common source is the fill tube plug described earlier: water arrives, meets ice, and overflows down the back wall of the freezer, eventually reaching the floor. Clearing the plug and correcting the freezer temperature deals with it.
Next is the supply line and its connection, which on a built-in runs concealed, so a weep goes into the cabinet base rather than onto a visible floor.
Third is the inlet valve weeping past its seat, which gives fused cubes and water at the same time.
Fourth, on an undercounter machine, is the drain, for the reasons above.

The Module Itself: What Actually Fails
When the free checks are clear and the water side is healthy, the failures inside a refrigerator ice maker are a short list.
The inlet valve. The most replaced part. Too little water gives thin cubes; weeping past the seat gives fused ones.
The mould thermostat or sensor. This tells the module when the cubes are frozen enough to harvest. When it fails the machine either never harvests or harvests early and dumps slush into the bin.
The ejector motor and gears. Gears strip, usually after a period of jamming caused by something else, which is why we look for the underlying cause rather than just fitting the part.
The mould heater. A small heater warms the mould briefly to release the cubes; if it fails they stay stuck and the ejector strains against them.
The whole module. On many designs these parts are not sold separately, so the repair is a complete assembly. That is a clean job and it is why ice maker repairs cluster in the middle of the price range rather than the bottom.
Taste, Smell and Old Ice
Ice that tastes wrong is almost never a machine fault, and people replace filters repeatedly without addressing the cause.
