Zero Local Calls, and the Fault We Meet Most

Thirteen completed jobs in Margate and not one of them a dishwasher. We are putting that at the top rather than burying it, because a page that quietly invented a local median from nothing would be worth less than one that tells you where its numbers come from. Every cost figure below is from our wider South Florida book and is labelled as such.

A zero is not a claim. Thirteen jobs is not a survey of a city and it does not mean dishwashers here never fail. Our Margate work has been entirely refrigeration, dryers and washers, which is an unusually narrow record and mostly a reflection of who has happened to call us. We service dishwashers here on the same schedule as everything else.

So this page is about the fault family that dominates dishwasher work everywhere: water that will not leave. It is the single most common dishwasher complaint we take across the whole company, it has six possible causes, and only one of them is the drain pump. People almost always assume the pump, and the pump is usually working perfectly.

The regional $355 is the figure to plan against. Note that it sits about twelve percent above the company-wide $318: South Florida dishwasher work runs dearer than the rest of our book, and hardness across the region is part of the reason. A drain fault specifically usually lands in the lower half of that band, and a fair share of them turn out to need no part at all.

Clean water or dirty water? That one question splits the diagnosis. Clean water left in the sump at the end of a cycle means the machine could not push its own water out, so the fault is in the filter, sump, pump or hose. Dirty water that appears between cycles, sometimes with food debris you did not put there, means water is coming back in from the sink drain, which is a hose routing problem and not a drain failure at all. Look at the water before you look at anything else.

The Drain Path, End to End

Water leaves a dishwasher along a path with six places it can be held up. Working through them in order takes about twenty minutes and resolves a good share of drain complaints without a visit.

One: the filter. At the bottom of the tub, usually twisting out in one or two pieces. Its job is to catch soil so the machine recirculates clean water, and when it fills, drainage slows and grit gets redeposited on everything. Rinse it under a tap with an old toothbrush for the mesh. Once a month is the right interval and almost nobody does it.

Two: the sump. The well underneath the filter, where the drain pump sits. Broken glass, fruit stickers, olive stones and bits of plastic collect there. With the filter out, look in with a torch and lift out anything solid by hand, carefully, since glass is the usual find.

Three: the pump. Only now. If the filter and sump are clear and the machine hums during the drain without moving water, the impeller is jammed or the pump has failed, and that is a genuine repair. Note that the hum is the tell: a pump that makes no sound at all during the drain phase points at electrical supply or the control instead.

Four: the drain hose. It runs from the machine to the sink cabinet, and it can be kinked behind the appliance, crushed where the machine was pushed back, or blocked internally near the end.

Five: the high loop or air gap. The hose has to rise to a high point, either at an air gap fitting on the counter or looped up under the countertop, before dropping to the disposal or drain tap. That loop is what stops sink water travelling backwards into the machine. If the hose runs flat at floor level, you get dirty water in the bottom after every cycle and everybody blames the pump. Fitting the loop is the fix and it is the cheapest thing on this page.

Six: the connection at the far end. Where a dishwasher drains into a waste disposal unit, that connection has a knockout plug that must be removed at installation. A machine that has never drained properly since the day it was fitted, as opposed to one that got worse, is worth checking there first. And a disposal full of waste, or a slow sink drain, will back a dishwasher up intermittently, which is a habit rather than a fault.

The Smell, and Why It Is the Same Problem

A dishwasher that smells between uses is almost always a drain issue wearing a different coat. Water that does not fully leave sits in the sump with soil in it, warm, in a closed box, and after a day or two it announces itself when you open the door.

The sequence to fix it is the same as above, in the same order, and then one addition: run an empty hot cycle with a proper dishwasher cleaner to clear the residue that has built up on surfaces the water no longer reaches properly. Doing that before dealing with the drainage is treating the symptom, and the smell comes back within a fortnight.

Two habits help afterwards. Scrape plates rather than rinsing them, which sounds backwards but is right: modern enzyme detergents need soil to work on, and the filter is designed to catch it, so rinsing spotless makes the wash worse and does nothing for the drain. And leave the door ajar for a while after a cycle so the interior dries rather than sealing damp air in, which matters more in a Florida kitchen than most.

If the filter is clean, the sump is clear, the hose is properly looped and the machine still leaves water or still smells, then it is the pump or the hose internally, and that is a visit. It will usually land in the lower half of the regional band, and the $99 diagnostic comes off the repair when you approve it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does dishwasher repair cost in Margate?
We have taken no dishwasher calls in Margate yet, so there is no local figure and we are not going to invent one. Plan against the regional number: $355 across 29 completed South Florida dishwasher repairs, middle half $255 to $379, and $318 company-wide across 60. The $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair when you approve it.
Do you actually service dishwashers here?
Yes, across both Margate ZIP codes and on the same schedule as every other appliance. The zero in our local book records what we have been called to, not what we do. Our Margate work so far has been refrigeration, dryers and washers, which is an unusually narrow record and mostly a reflection of who has happened to call.
There is water in the bottom after every cycle.
First look at the water. Clean water means the machine could not push its own water out, so work through the filter, the sump, then the pump and hose. Dirty water appearing between cycles, sometimes with debris you did not put there, means sink water is siphoning back in, which is a hose routing problem rather than a drain failure.
How do I know if it is the pump?
By sound, and only after the filter and sump are clear. A pump that hums during the drain phase without moving water has a jammed or failed impeller, and that is a genuine repair. A pump that makes no sound at all during that phase points at the electrical supply or the control instead, which is a different diagnosis.
What is the high loop?
The drain hose has to rise to a high point, at an air gap on the counter or looped up under the countertop, before dropping to the disposal or drain tap. That loop is what stops sink water travelling backwards into the machine. Run flat at floor level it siphons, which produces dirty water in the bottom after every cycle. Fitting the loop is the cheapest fix on this page.
My dishwasher has never drained properly since it was installed.
Check the disposal connection. Where a dishwasher drains into a waste disposal unit, there is a knockout plug that has to be removed at installation, and it is a well-known thing to forget. A machine that has never worked properly, as opposed to one that got worse over time, points there first and it is a five-minute fix.
My dishwasher smells. Is that a fault?
Usually the same drain problem in a different coat: water that does not fully leave sits in the sump with soil in it, in a closed warm box. Work through the drain path first, then run an empty hot cycle with a proper dishwasher cleaner. Doing the cleaner first is treating the symptom, and the smell comes back within a fortnight.
Can you come the same day?
Usually yes, if you call before noon Monday to Friday. We prioritise same-day where water is actively escaping. Margate sits on our north-west Broward run alongside Coconut Creek, Coral Springs and Tamarac, across ZIP 33063 and 33068.
