\nEverything in a refrigerator divides into two classes, and the class decides the decision.
\nOutside the sealed system sit fans, heaters, thermostats, boards, gaskets, valves and drains. All of them are replaceable parts on a machine that is otherwise sound, and all of them sit inside the ordinary price bands above.
\nInside the sealed system sit the compressor, the condenser, the evaporator and the refrigerant that circulates between them. Work in there means recovering refrigerant, brazing, replacing the drier and recharging by weight, which is why it is the top tenth of our book and why it is the point where age matters. On a machine past ten years, a sealed-system quote is usually the moment to stop.
\nThe one-minute test that tells you which side you are on: if the freezer is still cold and only the fridge section is warm, the sealed system is almost certainly fine. That pattern points at air movement or defrost, not at the compressor, and it is the single most common refrigeration call we take. - Condenser coils nobody cleans. Dust on the coils forces the compressor to run longer for the same cooling, and a compressor that never rests wears out early. Twice a year with a vacuum and a coil brush is the whole job \n
- A hot or unventilated location. A fridge in a garage in Florida, or squeezed into a cabinet with no air gap, runs a permanently harder duty cycle \n
- Door seals that stopped sealing. Warm humid air leaking in means more defrost cycles, more ice and more run time. Test it with a strip of paper: if it pulls out freely, the gasket has gone \n
- An ice maker and water line on hard water. Scale in the valve and the fill tube causes leaks and freeze-ups, and it is the reason ice makers are the most-replaced assembly in a modern fridge \n
- Power events. Boards and start relays do not like brownouts, and a fridge on a circuit that flickers loses parts faster than one on a clean supply \n

- Clean the condenser coils twice a year. The single highest-value thing you can do, and it costs nothing \n
- Leave an air gap. Manufacturers specify clearance at the back and top for a reason; a fridge in a tight alcove runs hot \n
- Hold 37 to 40°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer. Colder is not safer, it is just more run time \n
- Change the water filter on schedule and check the fill tube if ice quality drops, before the valve starts leaking \n
- Keep the defrost drain clear. Water inside the crisper or ice at the back wall is the early warning, and it is a cheap fix at that stage \n
- Do not overpack against the back wall. Blocking the vents starves the fridge section of cold air and imitates a fault \n
Do Some Types Last Longer?
\nConsistently, yes, and it follows complexity rather than price. A basic top-freezer with a mechanical thermostat, no ice maker and no dispenser has perhaps a third of the failure points of a French-door unit with a through-the-door dispenser, dual evaporators and a control board per compartment. Every added convenience is another part that can end the machine’s service life.
\nThat does not make the simple machine the right buy for everyone, but it does explain the InterNACHI spread. \nWorth its own section, because it is the assembly we replace more often than any other in a modern refrigerator and because it distorts how people judge the machine’s age. An ice maker is a small mechanism fed by a water line, a valve and a fill tube, and every one of those three is vulnerable to the minerals in ordinary tap water. Scale narrows the fill tube until it freezes shut, stiffens the valve until it either fails to open or fails to close, and coats the mould so cubes come out hollow and cloudy.
\nNone of that says anything about the health of the refrigerator itself. A ten-year-old fridge holding temperature perfectly with a dead ice maker is not a ten-year-old fridge at the end of its life; it is a sound machine with a $300 assembly to change. The mistake we see is people pricing a new refrigerator because the ice stopped, and the fix for that is knowing which fault you have. \nA refrigerator hides its faults better than any other appliance, which is why a proper diagnosis is a sequence rather than a look. The technician reads actual temperatures in both compartments against the set points, checks whether the evaporator fan runs when the door switch is defeated, looks at the evaporator for a coat of ice that says the defrost system has stopped working, tests the defrost heater and thermostat, checks the condenser fan and the state of the coils, and measures the compressor’s draw and start behaviour.
