A refrigerator that stops holding temperature is the one appliance you cannot leave until next week, and it is also the one where the cheap fault and the expensive fault look identical from the outside. Same warm shelf, same running compressor, and a bill anywhere from $90 to well over $600 depending on which part gave up. The diagnostic is $99 and is waived when you approve the repair, every job carries a 90-day parts-and-labour warranty, and we work ten metro areas. Florida and general (863) 474-2970, Texas (281) 205-1474.
Nearly every no-cooling call comes down to one of three systems. Airflow: the evaporator fan pushes cold air from the freezer into the fresh-food side, and when that fan fails the freezer stays cold while the fridge goes warm. Defrost: a heater melts the frost off the evaporator on a timer, and when it stops, ice bridges the coil until air cannot pass. Sealed system: compressor, start relay and refrigerant, the only group where the repair gets genuinely expensive.
The order matters because it is also the order of price. A technician who quotes a compressor before checking the evaporator fan and the defrost circuit is guessing with your money. We test airflow and defrost first on every call, and most of the time the answer is there.
| Repair | Typical cost, parts and labour |
|---|---|
| Start relay | $110 to $250 |
| Defrost heater or thermostat | $150 to $350 |
| Door gasket | $130 to $300 |
| Control board | $150 to $350 |
| Water inlet valve | $90 to $220 |
| Condenser coil cleaning and check | $90 to $160 |
| Condenser or evaporator fan motor | $150 to $320 |
Figures are the medians of the ranges already published on our nine metro refrigerator pages, for parts and labour on a named repair. The $99 diagnostic sits outside them and comes off when you approve the work.
Each of these costs nothing and each one resolves a real share of the calls we get. A technician arriving to do something you could have done in five minutes is a bad outcome for both of us.
Dust and pet hair on the coils is the single most common cause of a fridge that runs constantly and cools poorly. A vacuum and a brush fixes it, and it costs nothing.
The vent between freezer and fridge has to move air. A full shelf pressed against it produces exactly the symptom people call about.
Hold the door switch in. If the fan does not spin up, that is the fault, and it is a cheap one.
| What you notice | Usual suspects, cheapest first |
|---|---|
| Fridge warm, freezer cold | Evaporator fan, then frost on the coil from a defrost fault |
| Both sides warm, compressor running | Condenser coils, condenser fan, then the sealed system |
| Water pooling inside or underneath | Blocked defrost drain, then the water inlet valve or line |
| Runs constantly, never cycles off | Dirty coils, failed door gasket letting warm air in, thermostat |
| Loud buzz or click every few minutes | Start relay on the compressor, cheap part, do not let anyone sell you a compressor for this without testing |
The line is the sealed system. A compressor or a refrigerant leak on a unit past eight years old is the point where the arithmetic usually favours a new fridge, and we say so rather than quoting it. Everything above that line, fans, boards, gaskets, valves and defrost parts, is worth fixing on almost any unit that is otherwise sound. If you want to run the numbers yourself first, the repair-vs-replace calculator and the appliance lifespan database are the two pages worth ten minutes.
Twenty-nine cities have their own refrigerator page, written for that city rather than copied from a template. If your address is in one of them, start there.
Every city we cover is on the locations index, with Florida and Texas hubs. Not listed? Call anyway, we cover a wider area than we have pages for.
Before approving larger work, it helps to know where the machine sits in its life: how long refrigerators last gives the published range, our own repair bands and the point where replacing wins.
If the complaint is the bill rather than the temperature, start here: how many watts a refrigerator uses.
Built-in and panelled refrigeration is a different job from a freestanding machine: Viking appliance repair.
Panelled, cabinet-fitted refrigeration has its own page, because the repair-or-replace line sits much higher there: Sub-Zero refrigerator repair.
On some brands the compressor carries a much longer warranty than the rest of the machine, which changes what you should do first: LG appliance repair.
Two guides cover the most common reason people call us about a refrigerator: refrigerator not cooling for the full diagnosis, and freezer cold but fridge warm for the airflow case, which is the cheaper one.
Water on the kitchen floor is its own diagnosis, and usually a cheap one: refrigerator leaking water.
Over-cooling is its own fault and a cheap one to put right: refrigerator freezing food.

Each appliance has a page of its own covering how it fails, what the repair costs and when replacing beats fixing. If the machine giving you trouble is not the one on this page, start with its own.
