A dryer that does nothing at all feels terminal and rarely is. Most of these calls come down to a small safety component doing exactly what it was designed to do — a door switch, a thermal fuse, or a breaker that has given up on one leg of a 240-volt supply — and all three are inexpensive.
Dryer completely dead?
Check the breaker and the door first. If those are fine, it is a switch or a fuse — the $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair when you approve it.
Half a Breaker: the Fault Nobody Expects
Electric dryers in North America run on a 240-volt circuit, which arrives as two 120-volt legs through a double breaker. The heating element needs both legs; the motor and the control usually run on one. That split produces two symptoms that confuse people badly.
Lose one leg — a tripped half of the breaker, a loose connection, or a worn outlet contact — and you can get a dryer whose drum turns and whose lights work but which never heats. Lose the other leg and you get a dryer that is completely dead while the breaker looks fine, because only one half tripped and a double breaker does not always show it clearly.
So the first thing to do with a dead dryer is switch the breaker fully off and fully on again, both halves, deliberately. It costs nothing and it resolves a genuine share of these calls. If it goes dead again shortly afterwards, stop resetting it and get the circuit looked at, because a breaker that trips repeatedly is reporting something real. A gas dryer, by contrast, runs on ordinary 120 volts and does not have this failure mode at all.

The thermal fuse row deserves the attention. It is a small one-shot device in the exhaust path whose entire job is to cut power if the dryer overheats, and it does not reset — once it has blown, the dryer is dead until it is replaced. It is a cheap part. What matters far more is why it blew.
Why a Thermal Fuse Blows, and Why That Is the Real Question
A thermal fuse opens because the dryer got too hot, and the overwhelmingly common reason for that is restricted airflow. A blocked lint filter, a crushed or blocked vent duct, a run of flexible foil that has sagged and packed with lint, an exterior vent flap held shut by lint or a bird’s nest — all of them trap heat inside the machine until the fuse does its job.
Which means replacing the fuse alone is only half a repair. Fit a new fuse into a dryer with a blocked vent and it will blow again, probably within weeks. Worse, the same restriction is the mechanism behind dryer fires, so a blown thermal fuse is genuinely a warning worth acting on rather than a nuisance to reset past.
The proper repair is the fuse plus the airflow: filter cleaned, duct cleared end to end, exterior flap confirmed opening freely, and the run itself assessed — rigid metal duct kept short and straight beats a long sagging foil hose every time. Lights On, Nothing Happens
This version tells you the control has power, which rules out the whole supply side and narrows things considerably.
- Door switch. The machine will not start unless it is satisfied the door is shut. Open and close it firmly and listen for the click; a worn plunger or a bent strike is a common and cheap fault
- Control lock. Many machines have a lock that ignores every button. It usually shows as a small padlock icon, and it is released by holding a specific button — check the manual before assuming a fault
- Start switch. A momentary switch that wears out with use. The panel lights, the beep sounds, and nothing turns
- Belt switch. Some designs have a switch that cuts power if the belt breaks, so a snapped belt presents as a completely inert dryer rather than a drum that will not turn
- Motor centrifugal switch. Runs for a second and stops, or hums and does nothing
- Control board. Real but last on the list, and worth insisting the cheaper causes are measured first
Hums but the Drum Will Not Turn
Here the motor is being energised and something mechanical is stopping it, so the fault is in the drive rather than the electrics. The usual suspects are a seized idler pulley, a drum roller that has flat-spotted, a belt that has come off its pulley, or a motor whose own bearings have gone. On most designs you can turn the drum by hand with the power off: if it resists or grinds, that is your answer, and if it spins freely with a slack feel the belt has come off.
A dryer at this stage is worth stopping rather than retrying. A motor that hums against a jam is stalled, drawing heavily and heating up, and repeated attempts are how a seized roller turns into a replaced motor. Runs for a Second, Then Stops
A specific and useful symptom, because it points almost exclusively at the motor. Dryer motors have a centrifugal switch on the shaft: it changes state once the motor is up to speed, handing over from the start winding to the run winding and, on many designs, enabling the heat circuit at the same time. When that switch is worn, the motor starts, fails to hand over, and drops out again within a second or two.
The other explanation is thermal. A motor that has been overheating — because it has been fighting a stiff idler for months, or because airflow is poor — cuts out on its internal overload and then refuses to restart until it has cooled. The distinguishing test is time: a machine that will run again immediately is more likely a switch, and one that needs half an hour before it will try again has overheated.
Either way it is worth stopping rather than pressing start repeatedly, since each attempt puts the motor through a heavy stall current. A motor is one of the two parts that reach the top tenth of our dryer book, so protecting it is worth a few days of the laundrette.
What Not to Do
- Do not bypass a thermal fuse. It is the last line of defence against an overheating dryer, and defeating it removes the protection that stops a lint fire
- Do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again. Repeated tripping is a report, not a nuisance; something on that circuit needs looking at
- Do not keep pressing start on a dryer that hums or cuts out — every attempt is a stall current through the motor
- Do not run it with the duct disconnected “just to test it”, since that vents hot moist lint straight into the room
- Do not probe the outlet unless you know what you are doing. A 240-volt dryer circuit is not the place to learn
- Do not replace the control board first. It is the most expensive guess on the list and the least likely cause

What a Proper Diagnosis Checks
Both halves of the breaker cycled and the voltage at the outlet measured on each leg, since a lost leg explains both a dead dryer and one that turns without heating; the cord and outlet inspected for scorching and loose contacts; the door switch tested for continuity and its strike checked for alignment; any control lock ruled out before parts are discussed; the thermal fuse measured — and if it has opened, the airflow investigated rather than the fuse simply replaced; the lint filter, the full duct run and the exterior flap checked end to end; the start switch and belt switch tested; the drum turned by hand to feel for a seized idler or roller; the belt checked on its pulleys; the motor’s windings and centrifugal switch measured; and the control’s outputs observed on a start attempt.
