- A cool-down tumble. The last several minutes run with the heat off and the drum still turning, so the load cools while moving rather than compressed in a heap
- Gentler tumbling on some machines. Not universal, but many modern dryers reduce drum speed or add pauses on this cycle
The cool-down is the part people skip by opening the door early, and it is the part that does the work. A load pulled out hot and left in a basket will crease exactly as though it had been dried on high.

Why Heat Sets a Wrinkle
Cotton wrinkles because hydrogen bonds between cellulose chains re-form in whatever shape the fibre is left in when it dries. Synthetics wrinkle for a different reason: polyester and nylon soften as they warm, and a fold held in a softened fibre becomes permanent once it cools in place. That is also why a hot iron with steam removes creases and why a hot dryer with a heap of shirts at the bottom creates them.
Permanent press attacks both mechanisms at once. It keeps the temperature below the point where synthetics soften badly, and it keeps the load moving through the cooling phase so nothing sets in a fold. This is not marketing: it is why the cycle exists at all.
Getting the Most From It
- Unload immediately. The cool-down buys you a machine that is not creasing the clothes; leaving them in the drum for an hour undoes it
- Do not overfill. Clothes need room to move. A packed drum presses folds into everything regardless of the setting
- Shake items out before loading. A shirt that goes in balled up comes out creased whatever the cycle
- Take shirts out slightly damp and hang them. The last of the moisture leaves on the hanger and pulls the fabric straight
- Use wrinkle guard if you cannot unload. The periodic tumble after the cycle is genuinely effective for the first hour or two
- Dry like with like. A pair of jeans in with shirts means the dryer runs long enough for the jeans and cooks everything else
Permanent Press on the Washer
The same name appears on washing machines and does something analogous: a warm wash, a cool rinse and a reduced final spin speed. The slower spin is the important half, because a high-speed spin presses the load hard against the drum wall and that is where set-in creases start.
The trade-off is that a slower spin leaves more water in the load, so the dryer works longer. On a modern machine that is a reasonable exchange for not ironing, but it is worth knowing when you are wondering why one load takes so much longer to dry than another. When the Setting Stops Working
If clothes come out of permanent press hot and creased, or the cycle behaves exactly like the regular one, the machine is not honouring the temperature selection. That is a genuine fault and the causes are ordinary.

Is Permanent Press Gentler on Clothes?
Yes, measurably, and not only for synthetics. Every pass through a hot dryer costs cotton some fibre, which is what the lint screen is full of. Lower heat means slower fibre loss, so shirts keep their finish and colours fade more slowly. The cost is time: a permanent-press load takes longer than the same load on high heat.
For anything you care about, that trade is worth taking. The exception is towels, where high heat and vigorous tumbling are what makes them fluffy, and bedding, which is bulky enough to need the airflow that a full-heat cycle provides.
Reading the Care Label, Not the Machine
Manufacturers name cycles differently, which is why the same setting appears as permanent press on one machine, easy care on another and wrinkle control on a third. The care label on the garment is the more reliable guide, and it maps onto machine settings straightforwardly once you know the symbols.

Ironing Time Is the Real Measure
The honest way to judge whether the setting is working is not how the clothes feel coming out but how much ironing follows. A permanent-press load, unloaded promptly and hung, should leave shirts needing a quick press at the collar and cuffs rather than a full going-over.
If you find yourself ironing everything regardless, work through the list in order: the load was too big, it sat in the drum after the cycle, items went in balled rather than shaken out, the load mixed heavy and light items, or the machine is not honouring the temperature. Permanent press sits on a control panel alongside options that are often confused with it, so it is worth separating them.
- Steam refresh. Injects a small amount of water into a hot drum to relax creases in an already dry load. Useful for a shirt out of a suitcase, not a substitute for washing, and not related to the permanent-press cycle
- Sanitise. Holds a high temperature for a set period to reduce bacteria. It is the opposite of permanent press in temperature terms, and it is hard on synthetics

If your machine has damp dry, it pairs well with permanent press: stopping a shirt load slightly short and hanging it immediately gives the best finish a dryer can produce, because the remaining moisture lets the fabric pull itself straight on the hanger.
A Note on Load Size
Every recommendation on this page assumes the drum is no more than about two-thirds full, and that assumption does more work than the cycle selection. A dryer dries by moving hot air through tumbling fabric, and a packed drum stops the tumbling. The clothes then move as a single mass, the outside dries while the middle stays damp, and every fold in that mass is pressed flat for the length of the cycle.
The test is easy: after loading, you should be able to see the drum wall between items when you rotate it by hand. If the drum looks full at rest, take a third of the load out.
