First Hour: Protect the Contents
- Keep the door shut. A full freezer holds a safe temperature far longer unopened than most people expect; opening it to check resets that clock every time
- Do not refreeze thawed food that has been above safe temperature for an extended period. Follow food-safety guidance rather than judgement by smell
- Fill empty space with bags of ice or bottles of water. Thermal mass is what buys you hours
- Move what matters to a neighbour’s freezer or a cooler with ice while you arrange the visit
- Check the obvious first: the plug, the breaker, and whether a switch or timer feeding the outlet has been knocked
- Note whether the compressor is running, because that single fact splits the diagnosis before anyone arrives

Because a standalone freezer has no ice maker, no dispenser, no water line and usually one temperature zone, it carries fewer of the parts that push refrigerator repairs upward. In practice more freezer jobs land in the cheaper half of that spread than refrigerator jobs do.

The dividing line is the same as for refrigerators. Outside the sealed system, everything is a replaceable part on a machine that is otherwise sound. Inside it, the work means recovering refrigerant, brazing and recharging by weight, and that is where the age of the appliance starts to matter.
Chest or Upright: Does It Change the Cost?
The parts are similar; the access and the failure pattern differ. A chest freezer is the simplest cold appliance made: one compartment, a manual defrost, a lid gasket and very little else. That simplicity is why chest freezers routinely reach the far end of the published 10 to 20 year range, and why their repairs tend to be inexpensive when they happen.
An upright, particularly a frost-free one, adds a defrost heater, a timer or control board, a thermostat sensor and an evaporator fan. More parts mean more that can fail, and frost-free operation runs a heater inside a freezer several times a day, which is a demanding cycle. Repair or Replace
- Any age, fault outside the sealed system: repair. Gaskets, thermostats, fans, relays and defrost parts are ordinary money on a machine with a long life ahead of it
- Under 10 years, sealed-system fault: get it assessed. Freezers are simple cabinets and a sound one is worth a serious repair
- Over 15 years, sealed-system fault: usually replace, particularly on a small upright
- Any age, cabinet damage or rust through: replace. Insulation that has taken water never recovers
- Chest freezer, almost any fault: lean toward repair. They are cheap to fix and they last
- Garage or outbuilding installation: check the machine is rated for the ambient temperature before blaming it, because many are not
That last point catches people out. A freezer in an unheated garage can stop cooling in winter, not because it has failed but because the thermostat in the cabinet never registers a need to run when the room around it is cold. Garage-ready models exist for exactly this reason.
Getting to Twenty Years
- Clean the condenser coils twice a year. The same job as on a refrigerator, and the same payback
- Keep it reasonably full. Frozen mass holds cold, so a full freezer recovers faster and runs less
- Defrost manual models before the frost passes about a quarter of an inch. Frost is insulation on the wrong side of the wall
- Check the gasket with a strip of paper once a year: if it pulls out freely, the seal has gone
- Leave clearance for airflow at the back and sides, and keep the machine out of direct sun
- Do not overload the lid seal on a chest model by stacking above the fill line, which holds the lid open a fraction
Reading the Symptom Before You Call
Freezers give away more than people realise, and three observations narrow the diagnosis before a technician arrives.
Is the compressor running? Put a hand on the side or the back of the cabinet, low down. A running compressor is warm and produces a low hum. A silent, cold machine points at the start relay, the thermostat or the compressor itself. A machine that runs constantly and still will not cool points somewhere else entirely, usually at the condenser or the sealed system.
How fast did it happen? A failure over hours is electrical or mechanical: a relay, a fan, a thermostat. A slow drift upward over days or weeks is the signature of a refrigerant problem, because a leaking system loses capacity gradually rather than all at once.
Where is the frost? Even frost across the walls of a manual model is normal accumulation. Heavy frost on one wall of a frost-free machine points at the defrost system. Frost around the door only means the gasket. Ice on the evaporator behind the rear panel, if you can see it, means defrost again.

The Second Freezer Question
A large share of the freezers we attend are second appliances in a garage, a basement or a utility room, and that changes the economics in both directions. The machine is often older, frequently inherited from a kitchen replacement, and running in a location it may not be rated for.
Against repair: an old second freezer running in a hot garage can be one of the more expensive appliances in the house to operate, and the annual cost is worth checking against a modern replacement before spending on a sealed-system fault. For repair: a chest freezer that has been running for twelve years in a cool basement has years left, and the fault is usually a gasket, a thermostat or a relay. Judge the machine and its location rather than its age alone.
Defrost: the Job That Prevents Half of These Calls
On a manual-defrost machine, frost is not dirt, it is insulation forming on the inside of a wall whose entire purpose is to transfer cold. A quarter of an inch of it makes the compressor work measurably harder; an inch of it turns a healthy freezer into one that runs constantly and never quite gets there.
Defrosting properly takes an afternoon and nothing more expensive than towels. Empty the cabinet into coolers, switch the machine off, leave the lid or door open, and let the frost release on its own; bowls of hot water inside speed it up considerably. Never chip at ice with a knife or a screwdriver, because the evaporator tubing runs directly behind those walls and puncturing it converts a free job into a sealed-system repair, which is the most expensive class of work in this category.
Once it is clear, dry the interior completely before switching back on, and check the drain plug at the bottom of a chest model is refitted. Then note the date. Twice a year is the usual interval for a busy freezer, once a year for one that is rarely opened.
