Why Modern Cycles Got Longer

Less water. A certified machine now uses around 3.2 gallons a cycle against a federal limit of 5.0, and older machines used considerably more than either. That is efficient and silent, and it takes time.

If plastics come out wet while glass and china are dry, nothing is broken. Plastic holds too little heat to evaporate what is on it. Rinse aid genuinely helps here, and so does cracking the door open at the end of the cycle. If everything comes out soaked, that is a different matter: check rinse aid level first, then look at the vent flap and its fan, which on many machines is the part that fails silently.

Sometimes a machine has not slowed down at all: it has stopped and is waiting. A dishwasher that pauses mid-cycle without an obvious error often has a fill or drain fault, and it will sit at that stage for a long time before it flags anything. If the display counts down and then stops moving, open the door and look at the sump: standing water points at the drain, a dry tub at the fill.

Anti-flood devices behave the same way. Most machines have a float or a leak sensor in the base tray, and once it trips, the machine will drain and refuse to fill until the water is gone and the fault is cleared.
