A Katy washer that will not drain is the pump filter, the drain pump or the door lock, in that order, and the filter is something you can clear yourself in ten minutes. A washer that fills slowly has an inlet valve narrowed by mineral scale. But in an older Katy house the two most likely causes of a machine that bangs, walks or never finishes a cycle are not inside the appliance at all: they are a pier and beam floor that flexes, and a laundry space that was converted rather than designed. Most washer repairs run $90 to $500, and the $99 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair. Call (281) 205-1474.

Check the Pump Filter Before You Book Anyone

This is the most useful paragraph on the page and it will save some readers a service call entirely. Most front loaders and a growing number of top loaders have a small access hatch at the bottom front of the cabinet. Behind it are a drain hose stub and a screw-out pump filter, and that filter is where every coin, hair grip, screw and child’s sock ends up. It is meant to be cleaned by the owner and in the great majority of homes it never has been.

A blocked filter produces exactly the symptom people call about: the machine fills and washes normally, then stops with a drum full of water, often flashing a drain error. Have towels ready because there will be several litres behind that cap. Drain it into a shallow tray, unscrew the filter, clear it, rinse it and put it back. If the machine drains, you have fixed it for nothing.

If the filter is clear and it still will not drain, the fault is real: the drain pump, the door or lid switch that tells the machine it is safe to spin, or a blocked drain hose. Those are jobs for us.

Pier and Beam Floors, and Why Your Washer Walks

Most of suburban Katy is slab on grade. A slab is effectively immovable, so a level washer stays level and its vibration goes straight into the ground. Older Katy houses, and there are plenty of them in a town platted in 1895, are frequently pier and beam, and a framed floor behaves completely differently.

A framed floor deflects under load and has a resonant frequency of its own. A washer accelerating into a spin sweeps through a wide band of frequencies, and if one of them coincides with the floor, the room amplifies it for a few seconds. The machine appears to be throwing itself about even though its suspension is in perfect condition, and the same appliance on a slab would be unremarkable.

Three things help and none of them is a new washer. Level the machine properly, with a spirit level front to back and side to side and the feet locked, then re-check after the first few loads because feet settle into an older floor. Site it near a wall over a bearing point rather than in the middle of a span, since deflection is greatest mid-span. And fit anti-vibration pads, which make a genuine difference on framed floors and are barely worth mentioning on a slab.

Why we check this first: suspension rods and shock absorbers are a $150 to $330 job, and on a pier and beam floor they are frequently the wrong answer. If the machine is quiet on a slow spin and violent on a fast one, if the noise is worse in one part of the room than another, or if you can feel the floor moving, we look at the floor before we look at the machine.

Converted Laundry Spaces and Standpipe Height

The other older-house issue in Katy is where the laundry ended up. Houses built before laundry rooms were standard got their washer wherever there was room: a back porch, a corner of the garage, a closet off the hall. The drain went in to suit the space.

A washing machine drains into a vertical pipe called a standpipe, and that pipe has a correct height range with a reason at each end. The top has to be high enough that water cannot run back out of the machine under gravity, because if it sits below the water level in the drum the machine siphons: it fills and drains at the same time, so the cycle runs for hours or stops with an error. And it has to be low enough that the drain pump, which is designed to lift water a specified distance, is not working against a head it was never built for on every cycle, which shortens its life considerably.

In a converted space, neither end is guaranteed. Measure from the floor to the top of the standpipe and compare it against your manual before anybody sells you a pump or a pressure switch, because both of those get replaced regularly for a plumbing dimension.

Common Washer Failures We Fix in Katy

Will Not Drain, Drum Full of Water

Pump filter first, then the drain pump, a kinked or blocked drain hose, then the lid or door switch. Many machines refuse both drain and spin if they cannot confirm the door is secured, which is why a failed switch is so often mistaken for a dead pump.

Cycles Run Forever or Never Finish

Standpipe too low so the machine siphons, or a water level pressure switch reading wrongly. We measure the standpipe before opening the machine.

Fills Very Slowly

The water inlet valve narrowed by scale, or the fine mesh screens in the valve inlets clogged with grit. Both are inexpensive, and both are usually blamed on household water pressure.

Bangs and Walks on Spin

Floor and leveling first in an older house, then shock absorbers or suspension rods, then a tub bearing. Also check that shipping bolts were removed, which we still find in place on machines that have been running for a year.

Leaking Onto the Floor

Inlet hoses first, then the door boot seal on a front loader, then the pump housing or tub seal. Rubber inlet hoses over five years old are worth replacing on sight, and on a pier and beam house a leak that reaches the subfloor is a far bigger problem than the appliance.

Will Not Spin, Clothes Soaked

The door lock, the drive belt, the motor coupler on direct drive designs, or a machine that has not finished draining and therefore refuses to spin. We test the drain first because it reorders everything after it.

Smells of Mildew

A front loader problem the Gulf climate makes worse. Detergent residue and moisture in the door boot and dispenser feed it, and the answer is habit plus a proper clean rather than a part. If it survives that, standing water in the pump housing or a partly blocked drain path is holding it.

How We Diagnose a Katy Washer

We run a full cycle and watch it, and in an older house we start outside the machine. Floor construction and deflection, leveling checked with a level, standpipe height measured against the manufacturer’s range, drain hose depth and air gap, inlet hose age and condition. Then fill rate on both valves, inlet screens, water level and pressure switch, drain pump tested under load, pump filter and drain path, door lock tested electrically, belt or coupler, suspension and bearings by hand and by ear on spin. You get the fault, the part, the price and the timeline before work begins, and the $99 diagnostic is credited against the repair when you approve it.

Washer Repair Costs in Katy

RepairTypical cost (parts plus labor)
Braided stainless inlet hose replacement$60 to $130
Water inlet valve$100 to $230
Drive belt$110 to $220
Door lock or lid switch$110 to $240
Water level or pressure switch$120 to $250
Drain pump$130 to $320
Suspension rods or shock absorbers$150 to $330
Door boot seal, front loader$150 to $380
Control board$150 to $300
Drive motor$220 to $450
Tub bearing$350 to $650
Straight talk on replacement: pumps, valves, belts, switches, seals and boards are worth fixing on any washer in reasonable condition. The tub bearing is the exception, because on an entry-level machine the labor alone approaches the price of a replacement. And if the real cause is a flexing floor or a badly placed standpipe, no new washer will fix it, which is worth establishing before you spend money on an appliance.

Getting More Years Out of a Washer Here

Clean the pump filter every few months. It takes five minutes, it prevents the most common single call-out, and it stops the pump working against a restriction until it burns out.

Replace rubber inlet hoses with braided stainless and note the date. Those hoses are pressurized around the clock whether the machine is running or not, and a burst hose delivers water at full flow until somebody closes a valve. Turn the taps off if you are away for more than a few days.

Use less detergent than the box suggests and use the high efficiency formulation if the machine calls for it. Excess suds cushion the load rather than cleaning it, leave residue that feeds mildew in the door boot, and in hard water combine with mineral to film the drum. Leave the door and dispenser drawer open between loads so the machine can dry. And do not overload, because a drum that cannot balance takes the strain through its suspension and bearings, which on a flexing floor is compounded.

Washer Repair FAQ, Katy

How much does washer repair cost in Katy?
Most washer repairs here run $90 to $500 for parts plus labor. Replacing inlet hoses with braided stainless is $60 to $130, an inlet valve $100 to $230, a drive belt $110 to $220, a door lock $110 to $240, a drain pump $130 to $320, suspension or shock absorbers $150 to $330, a front loader door boot $150 to $380 and a control board $150 to $300. A tub bearing runs $350 to $650. The $99 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair.
My washer will not drain. What should I try first?
Clean the pump filter. Most front loaders and many top loaders have a small hatch at the bottom front of the cabinet with a screw-out filter behind it, and it catches coins, hair grips and screws. Have towels and a shallow tray ready because water will come out with it. Clear it, rinse it, refit it and run a drain cycle. If the machine drains you have fixed it for nothing. If not, the drain pump, the drain hose or the door lock are next.
My washer shakes badly in an older Katy house.
Look at the floor before the suspension. Older Katy houses are often pier and beam, and a framed floor deflects and has a resonant frequency of its own, so a spin cycle sweeping through its frequency range can set the whole room going even when the machine is perfect. Level it carefully in both directions with the feet locked, re-check after a few loads because feet settle into older floors, position it near a wall over a bearing point rather than mid-span, and fit anti-vibration pads, which genuinely help on framed floors.
My washer runs for hours and never finishes.
Measure the standpipe. If the top of the drain pipe sits too low, the machine siphons: water runs out under gravity while the drum is filling, so the cycle keeps topping up and either runs on indefinitely or stops with an error. Your manual gives the correct height range from the floor. This is a common leftover in converted laundry spaces, which older Katy houses have plenty of, and it is routinely misdiagnosed as a failed pump or pressure switch.
Can a drain that is too high damage the machine?
Yes, slowly. A washer drain pump is designed to lift water a modest, specified distance. If the standpipe sits above that range the pump still works, but it runs against a head it was not built for on every single cycle and fails years earlier than it should. Both ends of the height range exist for a reason and the manufacturer publishes the numbers, which is why we measure rather than assume.
Why does my washer take so long to fill?
Usually the water inlet valve narrowed by mineral scale, or the fine mesh screens in the valve inlets clogged with grit. If the taps in the same room run at normal pressure, the house is fine and the valve is not. Both the valve and the screens are inexpensive, and clearing the screens sometimes solves it with no parts at all.
How long should a washing machine last?
Ten to thirteen years for a mid-range machine used a few times a week, less for an entry-level machine in a busy household. The repair-or-replace rule is to repair when the cost is under about half the price of an equivalent new machine, which covers nearly every fault except a tub bearing on a cheap unit. One local caveat: a machine that has been draining against a badly placed standpipe for years will have had a hard life at the pump.
