Your Dial Is Not Degrees
On a great many refrigerators, the control is numbered 1 to 5, or 1 to 9, or marked from Min to Max. Those numbers are not temperatures. They are positions on a scale the manufacturer chose, and setting a dial to 4 tells you nothing whatsoever about how cold the inside actually is. Even on machines with a digital display showing a number in degrees, that figure is a target the control is aiming for rather than a live reading of what is in the box.
This matters because the complaint we hear most often about refrigerators is that they are not cold enough, and a meaningful share of those calls end with a measurement rather than a part. The food safety targets worth knowing are 37 to 40 F in the fresh food compartment and near 0 F in the freezer. Anything colder in the fresh food side starts freezing lettuce and milk; anything much warmer shortens the life of everything in it.
Measuring properly takes one evening and costs the price of a cheap thermometer. For the freezer, put the thermometer between two frozen packages, close the door, and read it in the morning. For the fresh food compartment, do not just hang a thermometer in the air, because the air temperature swings every time the door opens and every time the compressor cycles. Instead stand a glass of water on the middle shelf with the thermometer in it, leave it overnight, and read that in the morning. The water evens out the swings and gives you the temperature your food is actually sitting at.
Two numbers, one night, and now you know whether you have a fault or a setting. If the fresh food side reads 45 F while the freezer is holding near 0, that is an airflow problem inside the machine rather than a cooling problem, and this page explains why. If both are warm, the machine is not making cold and that is a different conversation. And if both are fine, the problem is somewhere else entirely — a door left ajar, a damper closed, or a shelf blocking a vent.

| Diagnostic visit | $99 | flat | applied to the repair when you approve it |
Four repairs cannot carry a median, so the jobs are printed instead. They sit neatly inside the regional middle half of $255 to $453, which is what an ordinary refrigeration book looks like: component work, no sealed-system jobs, no control boards. Plan against the regional $375 and expect the lower half of that band if your fault turns out to be a fan, a relay or a defrost component.
Match the Symptom to the Likely Cause
| What you see | Most likely cause here | What helps before the visit |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh food at 45 F, freezer near 0 F | Airflow: evaporator fan, damper, or frost | Glass of water overnight to confirm the reading |
| Both compartments warm | The machine is not making cold at all | Listen for the compressor, feel the coils |
| Milk freezing on the top shelf | Set too cold, or a damper stuck open | Take a reading before changing anything |
| Cooling fades gradually over several days | Defrost heater, thermostat or timer | Note whether it recovers after being switched off |
| Clicks every few minutes, never runs | Start relay or start device | Note the interval between the clicks |
| Runs constantly, never quite cold enough | Condenser fan, or coils that cannot shed heat | Pull it forward, look at the coils and the fan |
| Frost building on the back wall of the freezer | Defrost circuit, or a door not sealing | Test the seal with a banknote at several points |
| Water pooling inside or under the crispers | Defrost drain blocked with ice or debris | Clear the drain trough at the back floor |
Where the Cold Actually Comes From
Understanding one piece of design explains most refrigerator complaints, so it is worth two minutes.
The great majority of household refrigerators have a single evaporator, the coil that actually gets cold, and it lives in the freezer behind a panel. Nothing in the fresh food compartment makes cold at all. Instead a fan blows air over that evaporator and pushes some of it through a duct into the fresh food section, where a damper controls how much gets through. The fresh food compartment is, in effect, a room that is air-conditioned by the freezer next door.
That design explains the single most confusing symptom in refrigeration: a freezer that is perfectly cold above a fresh food section that is not. Nothing is wrong with the cooling. The cold is being made correctly and is not being delivered. The candidates are the evaporator fan having failed, frost having built up on the evaporator until air cannot pass through it, or the damper having stuck closed. All three are component-level repairs rather than sealed-system work.
It also explains why blocking a vent matters. There are air outlets and returns inside both compartments, usually at the back, and stacking food against them is like putting a cushion over an air-conditioning grille. The machine keeps running because the sensor near the return is not seeing the temperature it wants, while the part of the compartment behind the blockage sits warm. If your milk is fine and the vegetables at the back are freezing, or the other way round, look at what is in front of the vents before you look at anything else.
Some larger and premium machines use two evaporators, one per compartment, which is why they can hold humidity better in the fresh food side. Those fail differently and the split symptom above does not apply to them in the same way. If you are not sure which you have, tell us the model when you book and we will know.
Loading, Airflow and the Full-Freezer Rule
Three loading habits change how a refrigerator performs, and none of them costs anything to correct.
Keep the vents clear. Find the outlets and returns in both compartments and leave a gap in front of them. This is the single most common cause of one part of a compartment being the wrong temperature while another part is fine.
Keep the freezer reasonably full. Frozen food is thermal mass, and mass holds temperature. A full freezer recovers far faster after the door is opened than an empty one, because most of what is inside is already cold and stays cold. If yours is half empty, bottles of water fill it usefully and cost nothing. This matters more in a Florida summer than most places, since the air rushing in when the door opens is warm and humid.
Do not pack the fresh food side solid. The opposite rule applies above the freezer, because that compartment is cooled by moving air rather than by mass. Packed to the walls, the air cannot circulate and pockets of it sit warm. Two-thirds is about right.
One more habit worth building. Twice a year, pull the machine out, clear the condenser coils of dust, and check the gap behind it. Those coils are how the machine hands its heat to the room, which is the entire job it does, and in a household with pets they fur up remarkably quickly. Combined with a seal test using a banknote at several points around each door, that is fifteen minutes of maintenance a year that materially affects how hard the appliance has to work and how long its components last.
