If your LG refrigerator has stopped cooling and the machine is under about ten years old, the first thing to do is not to call anybody: it is to find the original paperwork. Sealed-system parts on these are frequently covered for a decade, and a covered compressor should not cost you a repair bill at all.

Check the Warranty Before You Pay Anyone

This is the most valuable paragraph on the page, so it goes first. LG has for years advertised extended coverage on the parts that make cold and the parts that drive the drum — commonly ten years on the linear compressor in refrigeration and on the direct-drive motor in laundry, with the labour portion much shorter. Terms vary by model, by year and by whether you are the original purchaser, so the only authority is your own documentation or LG’s support line with your model and serial number.

What that means practically: if the diagnosis lands on the compressor or the drive motor and the machine is inside that window, that part should come through the manufacturer’s channel rather than through us. We are an independent company and we cannot claim on the manufacturer’s behalf, so we will tell you when what we have found is likely to be covered. Everything else on the appliance — fans, boards, valves, pumps, heaters, seals, sensors — is ordinary out-of-warranty work where an independent technician is usually faster to get to you.

Direct Drive: What It Removes and What It Adds

A conventional washer turns the drum with a motor, a belt and a pulley, or on older top-loaders a motor and a coupling. LG’s laundry uses a motor mounted directly to the drum shaft, and that single design decision rewrites the fault list.

What it removes is the belt, the pulley and the coupling — three of the most common laundry repairs on other machines, gone. What it adds is that the motor is part of the drum assembly, so a bearing that has been left to fail takes more with it than it would on a belt-driven machine, and the electronics that commutate a direct-drive motor, the stator and the hall sensor, become part of the diagnosis.

The practical rule for an owner is the same one that applies to every washer, only more so: deal with a new rumble on spin while it is still a noise. Reading the Error Code

LG appliances stop and display a code rather than simply failing, which is genuinely useful: the code narrows the diagnosis before a technician arrives and often points at something you can check yourself. Codes differ between models and generations, so treat the manual as the authority, but the common laundry ones behave consistently.

Write the code down exactly as it appears and tell us on the phone. It is the difference between a technician arriving with the likely part on the van and a second visit.

Mass-market equipment sits in the middle of those bands rather than at the top, which is the practical difference between servicing an LG and servicing built-in premium equipment: the parts are made in volume and the machines are designed to come apart from the front or the back rather than to be drawn out of cabinetry. Faults We See Most

• Fridge section warming while the freezer stays cold. The evaporator fan or a defrost circuit icing over, not the compressor. The most common refrigeration call we take on any brand

Repair or Replace on Freestanding Equipment

Here the arithmetic is simpler than it is for built-in appliances, because replacement is a delivery rather than a joinery project. The standard rule applies: compare the quote with what the same class of machine costs new, and weigh it against the age.

• Under five years: repair, and check the warranty first if the fault is in the sealed system or the drive motor
• Five to nine years: repair up to about half the price of a replacement; most of our medians sit comfortably under that line
• Ten years and beyond: repair the cheap single-part faults, and put a larger quote next to the price of a new machine before deciding
• Any age, structural damage: rust through a cabinet or insulation that has taken water is the honest end of an appliance

What a Diagnosis Involves

On refrigeration: actual temperatures read in both compartments against the set points, the evaporator inspected for a coat of ice that says defrost has stalled, fans tested with the door switches defeated, thermistors measured, the condenser and its clearance checked, and only then the compressor’s draw and start behaviour. On laundry: the machine levelled and checked for rock, the pump filter and drain path cleared, the drum spun by hand for bearing play, the stored fault history read where the machine keeps one, and a full cycle run to prove the fix. On both, the error code is the starting point rather than the answer.

You get the fault named, the part named, availability confirmed, whether it looks like a warranty claim, and the total before anything is ordered. The $99 comes off that total when you approve the work.

Maintenance That Matters on These Machines

• Clean the refrigerator condenser twice a year. The highest-value job on any fridge, and it costs nothing but a vacuum
• Clean the washer pump filter every three to six months; on direct-drive machines it is behind the small hatch at the bottom front
