Nearly every drum complaint arrives as a noise, and the useful question is whether the noise is the drum itself or something sitting against it. The two sound different and they cost very different amounts, so it is worth ten minutes before anybody is called out.
Open the door and turn the drum by hand, slowly, with the machine off. A bearing that has gone will feel gritty or notchy through your fingers and often makes a low grinding sound at walking pace. A loose object trapped between the drum and the outer tub gives a distinct rattle or scrape at one point in the rotation and nowhere else. Then push the drum up and down at the front edge: real vertical play, more than a couple of millimetres, is the bearing.
The third possibility on a top-loader is the suspension rather than the drum. If the noise only appears at spin speed and the machine walks or bangs against the cabinet, the shock absorbers or suspension rods have gone and the drum is fine. The pattern worth noticing: the parts that hold the drum steady are cheap and reachable, and the parts inside the tub are not. How to Balance the Drum
Most drums that seem out of balance are not damaged at all. Work through this in order before anyone is called.
- Level the machine first. Put a spirit level on the top panel front to back and side to side, then adjust the feet until it reads level and none of the four rock. On most washers the rear feet self-adjust when the machine is tilted forward and set back down.
- Push down on each corner in turn. Any movement means a foot is short. A washer that rocks by a few millimetres standing still will walk across the floor at 1 000 rpm.
- Check the floor, not only the washer. A springy timber floor lets a perfectly level machine bounce. A sheet of plywood under both feet lines, or an anti-vibration mat, fixes more of these than parts do.
- Look for transit bolts on a newer front-loader. They ship with the drum bolted rigid, and a machine moved house with them left in will hammer itself apart.
- Rebalance the load. One bath sheet or a single pair of jeans is the classic offender: it soaks up water on one side and the machine cannot spin it out. Add two or three items to spread the weight, do not remove the wet one.
- Then, and only then, suspect the machine. If it is level, the load is spread and it still walks or bangs, the suspension rods, dampers or counterweight bolts are the next suspects, in that order.

A drum that has genuinely come away from its mounting is rare, and it announces itself: the basket drops or tilts visibly, metal grinds on metal the moment the machine moves, and the door or lid may no longer line up. Far more common are three faults that feel identical from the outside.
