The Free Check That Comes First
Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after a few hours. It should hold around 0°F. Above roughly 10°F the harvest cycle does not complete: cubes stick in the mould, the mechanism stalls, and the machine looks broken when the actual fault is the freezer temperature.
This matters because it redirects the whole diagnosis. A freezer running warm is a refrigeration problem, and the ice maker is the symptom that made you notice. Fixing the ice maker in that situation achieves nothing.

Repair the Assembly or Replace It?
Most modern refrigerator ice makers are sold as a complete assembly rather than as individual parts, which simplifies the decision. If the module, motor or thermostat has failed, the assembly is replaced as a unit. If the fault is upstream, at the valve, the filter or the line, that is repaired on its own.
A refrigerator whose ice maker has failed is not a refrigerator at the end of its life. That distinction matters because the ice maker is the most frequently replaced assembly in a modern fridge, and people price whole appliances over it. Standalone and Undercounter Ice Machines
These are a different appliance and should be priced as one. A dedicated ice machine has its own compressor, condenser and sealed system, plus a water pump, a cleaning cycle and often a drain. Faults divide the same way refrigerators do: everything outside the sealed system is ordinary work, and compressor or refrigerant faults are the expensive class.
Scale is the dominant maintenance issue. Commercial and premium residential machines have a published cleaning routine with a manufacturer-approved descaler, and skipping it is the single fastest way to halve output. If your machine produces less ice each month rather than failing suddenly, scale is the first suspect, and that is a cleaning job before it is a repair. What Makes Ice Makers Fail Early
- Hard water. Minerals narrow the fill tube until it freezes shut and scale the mould so cubes stick
- A filter nobody changes. Restricted flow gives small, hollow cubes and makes the valve work against pressure it was not designed for
- Saddle valves on the supply line. Common on older installations, prone to slow leaks and partial blockages; a proper shut-off is the better arrangement
- A freezer set warmer than 0°F, usually to save energy, which quietly stops the harvest cycle completing
- Ice left in the bin for weeks. Cubes sublimate and fuse, the auger jams, and the motor takes the strain
- Turning the machine off and on repeatedly while diagnosing, which cycles the module through half-completed harvests
Before You Book, Do These
- Confirm the freezer holds 0°F with a thermometer, not with the display
- Check the shut-off valve on the supply line is fully open, and that the line is not kinked behind the machine
- Change the water filter if it is older than the manufacturer’s interval, usually six months
- Empty the bin completely and run three fresh batches before judging taste or cube quality
- Look for ice under the fill tube, which points directly at overflow or a frozen tube
- Note whether the mould fills at all, because that single fact splits the diagnosis in half
Those six take about ten minutes and they resolve a meaningful share of calls without a visit. If you have done them and there is still no ice, the diagnosis is worth paying for, and it comes off the repair.
How the Cycle Works, and Where It Stops
A refrigerator ice maker runs the same five stages on every brand, and knowing them makes the fault obvious to describe on the phone.
- Fill. The module signals the inlet valve, which opens for a measured few seconds and sends water down the fill tube into the mould
- Freeze. The mould sits in the freezer air stream until a thermostat or sensor decides the ice is solid
- Harvest. A small heater warms the mould just enough to release the cubes, and the ejector arms sweep them out
- Sweep and reset. The arms return, the module resets, and the fill stage begins again
- Bin control. A feeler arm or an infrared beam stops the whole cycle when the bin is full
Each stage fails in a recognisable way. No water in the mould is the fill stage: valve, tube or supply. Cubes that never release is the harvest stage: heater or module. A machine that fills and freezes but never restarts is the bin control, and on beam-controlled machines a smear on the sensor window is enough to stop everything. The Bin Control Nobody Suspects
Worth its own note because it produces a confident false diagnosis. On machines with a feeler arm, the arm can be knocked into the raised position by a bag of frozen food, and the ice maker then behaves exactly as though it has died: no fill, no cycle, no ice. Lower the arm and everything resumes.
On machines with an infrared beam across the bin, condensation, frost or a smear on the emitter window has the same effect. Wiping both windows with a dry cloth takes ten seconds and is worth doing before any part is considered. Water Quality Is the Whole Story
If one theme runs through every ice-maker call we attend, it is what the water carries. Dissolved minerals do three separate kinds of damage, and each shows up as a different complaint.
In the fill tube, minerals narrow the bore. A narrower tube passes less water in the valve’s fixed open time, so cubes come out small and hollow, and eventually the residual water in a constricted tube freezes solid and stops the fill entirely.
In the mould, scale changes how ice releases. Cubes cling instead of dropping, the harvest heater runs longer to free them, and a cycle that should take a couple of hours stretches out. That is the mechanism behind most complaints of cloudy or fused ice.
In the valve, mineral grit prevents the seat closing cleanly, so the valve seeps between cycles. That is where the overflow ice on the freezer floor comes from, and it is the fault most often mistaken for a leaking fridge.
A filter changed on schedule addresses the first two. The third is a part, and it is inexpensive relative to everything else in refrigeration. In a hard-water house, treating the filter as a consumable with a date rather than an optional accessory is the single most cost-effective habit available.
