First, Measure It Properly

The display is a set point, not a measurement, and on many machines the two disagree by several degrees. Put a thermometer between packages, not against a wall or in the door, leave it for several hours with the door shut, then read it. Do the same in the fresh-food compartment while you are at it, because the pair of numbers is what actually names the fault.

The Causes, in the Order We Find Them

1. Condenser coils

The most common and the only one that is free to fix. The condenser is the coil whose job is to throw heat out of the appliance, and a blanket of dust and pet hair on it works exactly like insulation. The machine runs longer and longer for less and less cooling, and the freezer is the first compartment to lose ground because it is asked for the biggest temperature difference. Unplug the machine, pull the lower grille, vacuum and brush the coils, plug it back in and give it a day.

2. Door gasket

A freezer door that no longer pulls itself square lets a slow stream of warm humid air in around the clock. Two signatures give it away: frost building consistently on one side of the compartment, and a machine that runs almost continuously without ever reaching temperature. Test it with a sheet of paper — shut the door on it and pull. If it slides out without drag anywhere along the perimeter, the seal is not holding there. Cleaning the gasket and the frame with warm soapy water fixes a surprising share of these, since spilled food on the sealing face is enough to hold the door open.

3. Defrost system

Frost-free freezers melt the frost off their evaporator several times a day using a small heater. When the heater, its thermostat or its control stops working, ice grows on the evaporator over days until air cannot pass through it. The temperature then climbs slowly and steadily, and the pattern is unmistakable: switch the machine off overnight with the doors open and it works properly again for several days before drifting back. Visible frost on the rear wall of the freezer is the same story from the outside.

4. Fans

Two fans matter. The condenser fan moves air across the coils, and without it the machine cannot dump heat no matter how clean the coils are — that produces a freezer that struggles worst in hot weather. The evaporator fan moves cold air inside the cabinet; when it stops, the freezer usually stays roughly cold near the evaporator while the rest of the compartment and the whole fresh-food section warm up. Both are audible faults if you know what silence sounds like.

5. Sealed system

Refrigerant leak, restriction, or a compressor that has lost capacity. The signature is a machine that runs constantly and holds a temperature well above target with everything else on this list checked and correct — a freezer stuck at 20°F for weeks, neither recovering nor failing outright. Ice patterns are the most useful free diagnostic in a freezer, because ice forms where moisture arrives and where air stops moving.

The last row matters because it is the case where nothing is broken. Freezer burn is dehydration at the surface of the food; if the compartment measures 0°F, the answer is better wrapping and a fuller freezer, not a repair.

Things That Are Not Faults

  • A nearly empty freezer. Frozen mass is thermal ballast; an empty compartment swings far more every time the door opens
  • A garage or porch freezer in summer. Ambient heat raises the duty cycle, and some models are not rated for unconditioned spaces at all
  • A big load of unfrozen food. Freezing several kilos of room-temperature groceries takes a day and lifts the whole compartment while it happens
  • Ice cream that is soft at 0°F. High-fat ice cream is genuinely softer than water ice at the same temperature
  • A drawer that will not shut fully because something is stacked past the rail — that is a door left open, mechanically speaking
  • An inverter compressor that never stops. Those run continuously at low speed by design; judge them on temperature

The practical consequence is where to look first. On a chest freezer that has gone warm, the thermostat and the lid seal are the two prime suspects and there is no defrost system to blame. How Long You Have Before the Food Suffers

A full freezer with the door kept shut holds safe temperatures for roughly two days, and a half-full one for about a day, which is the standard guidance for a power cut and applies just as well to a machine that has stopped cooling. The variables are how full it is, how well insulated, and how many times someone opens it to check.

So the practical order is: stop opening it, consolidate the contents into one dense block in the middle, and add bagged ice if you can get it. If a freezer has been sitting warm for longer than that, judge the food by current USDA guidance rather than by how it looks — anything still holding ice crystals can be refrozen with some loss of quality, and anything soft needs a decision.

What a Proper Diagnosis Checks

Compartment temperature measured against the set point with an instrument rather than read off the panel; condenser condition, clearance and fan operation; the gasket tested along its whole perimeter and the door checked for square; the rear panel removed to see whether the evaporator is iced; defrost heater and bimetal thermostat measured for continuity; the drain confirmed clear; evaporator fan run with the door switch defeated; thermistor resistance compared against specification; and only then the compressor’s current draw and start behaviour, which is what distinguishes an ordinary repair from sealed-system work.

Why is my freezer not freezing?

Why is there frost all over my freezer?
Frost is moisture that came in as humid air. A fine coating everywhere usually means air is getting in — a leaking gasket, a door not quite shutting, or heavy use in a humid room. Heavy frost concentrated on the rear wall is different: that is the defrost cycle failing to clear the evaporator, and it will keep getting worse until the airflow closes entirely.
Will defrosting it manually fix the problem?
It will restore normal operation for several days if the evaporator had iced over, which makes it a useful diagnostic. Switch the machine off, leave the doors open for several hours, dry it, and start it again. If the freezer then holds 0°F for a few days and drifts back, you have confirmed a defrost fault, and the part will need replacing because the ice regrows on the same schedule.
Does a freezer work better full or empty?
Full, comfortably. Frozen food is thermal mass: it holds temperature between compressor cycles and it limits how far the compartment warms when the door opens.
