Air damper

Between the freezer and the fresh-food compartment sits a flap that meters how much cold air crosses over. It is either motorised or thermostatically operated depending on the model. When it sticks open — ice in its housing, a failed motor, a broken linkage — the fridge receives freezer air continuously and there is nothing the control can do about it. The classic tell is that the fresh-food section is far too cold while the freezer is only slightly warm, because the freezer is losing air it should be keeping.

Control board or a relay that will not release

Less common but real: the compressor keeps running because the circuit that should stop it does not open. Both compartments then run colder than their set points, and the machine never rests. Airflow and loading

Not a fault, but the cause of a large share of these complaints. A fridge with three items in it swings much colder between compressor cycles than one that is comfortably full, because there is no thermal mass to hold the temperature steady. Add a crisper drawer sealed shut on its high-humidity setting, and cold air pools in the bottom of the cabinet with nowhere to go. Two things follow from that table. If only the items directly in the airstream are freezing, the appliance is behaving correctly and the answer is to move them. And if the milk on the door shelf is freezing — the warmest spot in the machine — then the whole cabinet is genuinely too cold and a part is at fault.

A One-Day Test Before You Book

Worth doing, because it separates a fault from a setting and takes no tools. Set the fresh-food compartment to 38°F, or to the middle of its scale if it has no numbers. Move everything at least a few inches clear of the rear vent. Open the crisper humidity slides. Put a thermometer on a middle shelf and another in the crisper. Then leave the fridge alone for a full day, opening it as little as you normally would.

Read both thermometers the next evening. If the middle shelf is near 38°F and only the crisper is cold, it is airflow and loading, and rearranging solves it. If the middle shelf reads 32°F or below while the panel claims 38°F, the machine is not obeying its own setting: that is a sensor, a damper or a control, and it is a repair.
