Refrigerator Freezing Food: Why It Over-Cools and What It Costs

This complaint gets dismissed as fussiness far more often than it deserves. A fridge holding 30°F is as broken as one holding 50°F — it is simply failing in a direction that spoils produce and splits bottles instead of growing bacteria. And because the food still looks safe, people live with it for months.
Fridge freezing everything?
It is a cheap fault in almost every case — sensors and dampers, not refrigeration. The $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair when you approve it.
Rule Out the Free Causes First
- Read the actual temperature. A thermometer between items, left several hours, not the panel. Fresh food wants about 38°F
- Check the set point. Someone may have turned it, and on many machines the numbers run in the opposite direction to intuition
- Look at where the frozen items are. If it is only what sits under the rear vent, that is the airstream, not the appliance
- Empty the crisper drawer’s humidity slide and check its position; a sealed drawer with cold air pooling in it freezes produce first
- Note how full the fridge is. A nearly empty compartment swings much colder between cycles than a full one
- Check nothing is holding the door slightly open, which makes the machine run continuously and overshoot on the cold side

Which Items Freeze First Tells You Where the Cold Is Coming From

The first two rows are worth acting on before calling anyone, because they are placement problems rather than faults. Cold air enters the fresh-food compartment as a jet from a vent in the rear wall, usually high up, and anything parked directly in front of that vent gets freezer air. Move it eight inches and the problem disappears.
The Four Causes in Detail
Thermistor or cold-control thermostat
This is the one we find most on a machine that freezes everything evenly. The refrigerator decides when to cool based on what a sensor reports, and a thermistor drifting a few degrees low in its reading — reporting 45°F when the compartment is at 34°F — produces exactly this. The machine is not malfunctioning in its own terms; it is obeying bad information. On older mechanical designs the equivalent is a cold-control thermostat whose contacts no longer open. Both are inexpensive parts and both are found by measuring rather than guessing, which is why the display cannot be trusted as evidence.
Air damper
Between the freezer and the fresh-food compartment sits a flap that meters how much cold air crosses over. It is either motorised or thermostatically operated depending on the model. When it sticks open — ice in its housing, a failed motor, a broken linkage — the fridge receives freezer air continuously and there is nothing the control can do about it. The classic tell is that the fresh-food section is far too cold while the freezer is only slightly warm, because the freezer is losing air it should be keeping.
Control board or a relay that will not release
Less common but real: the compressor keeps running because the circuit that should stop it does not open. Both compartments then run colder than their set points, and the machine never rests. Worth distinguishing from the inverter-compressor designs now common, which run continuously at low speed by design — those are judged on temperature, not on whether they cycle.
Airflow and loading
Not a fault, but the cause of a large share of these complaints. A fridge with three items in it swings much colder between compressor cycles than one that is comfortably full, because there is no thermal mass to hold the temperature steady. Add a crisper drawer sealed shut on its high-humidity setting, and cold air pools in the bottom of the cabinet with nowhere to go. Both effects freeze produce at a set point that would otherwise be fine.
What It Does to the Food
- Leafy greens and cucumbers collapse as their cell walls rupture, and never recover texture
- Milk and juice separate, and glass bottles crack when the contents expand
- Eggs expand and split their shells, which is a genuine contamination risk once the membrane is broken
- Cheese and cured meat go crumbly and weep when they thaw
- Fizzy drinks in cans burst, which makes a mess of the whole compartment
- Anything with a high water content loses texture permanently, even where it remains perfectly safe to eat
Nothing here is a safety problem — cold food does not spoil — which is exactly why the fault persists. It is a quality and a waste problem, and it costs more in ruined produce over a few months than the repair does.
Where to Put Things So Nothing Freezes
Even a healthy refrigerator is not one temperature. It is a stack of zones, and knowing them fixes a share of these complaints without any parts at all.

Two things follow from that table. If only the items directly in the airstream are freezing, the appliance is behaving correctly and the answer is to move them. And if the milk on the door shelf is freezing — the warmest spot in the machine — then the whole cabinet is genuinely too cold and a part is at fault.
A One-Day Test Before You Book
Worth doing, because it separates a fault from a setting and takes no tools. Set the fresh-food compartment to 38°F, or to the middle of its scale if it has no numbers. Move everything at least a few inches clear of the rear vent. Open the crisper humidity slides. Put a thermometer on a middle shelf and another in the crisper. Then leave the fridge alone for a full day, opening it as little as you normally would.
Read both thermometers the next evening. If the middle shelf is near 38°F and only the crisper is cold, it is airflow and loading, and rearranging solves it. If the middle shelf reads 32°F or below while the panel claims 38°F, the machine is not obeying its own setting: that is a sensor, a damper or a control, and it is a repair. Over-cooling sits at the cheap end even by these standards, because the parts involved — a sensor, a damper, sometimes a thermostat — are among the least expensive in the machine. What a Proper Diagnosis Checks
Both compartments measured against their set points with an instrument, since a fridge that freezes food is usually several degrees out rather than slightly; the position of the food relative to the air vents, because placement explains a real share of these calls; the damper operated by hand and by its control to confirm it closes fully; thermistor resistance compared against specification at a known temperature; the cold-control thermostat on older machines tested for contacts that open; the control board’s cooling output observed across a full cycle; and the compressor’s behaviour checked to confirm it stops when told. Crisper humidity slides and drawer seals last, because they turn a marginal set point into frozen produce.
