How to Tell If an Appliance Repair Quote Is Fair

? 668 of Neighborville’s own priced repairs ? Median repair $355 ? Middle half $255 to $427 ? $99 diagnostic, waived on approval

Quick Answer: Is Your Appliance Repair Quote Fair?

A fair appliance repair quote names the failed part, separates parts from labour, states the diagnostic fee and the warranty, and lands inside the normal range for that appliance. Across 668 priced repairs in Neighborville’s own book, the median was $355 and the middle half ran from $255 to $427. Nine in ten were under $550.

  • Under about $430: inside the middle half of real repairs for most appliances
  • $430 to $550: normal for larger parts such as boards and motors — ask which part
  • Over $600: only about 7% of Neighborville’s repairs; get the part named and priced separately
  • No part named, no written price, no warranty: the quote is incomplete, whatever the number

Most people judge a repair quote by gut feeling, standing in the kitchen with a technician waiting for an answer. That is the worst possible moment to evaluate a number. This page gives you something better to compare against: the actual distribution of what repairs cost across our own completed work, by appliance, and a short checklist for reading the quote itself.

Want a second price?

Our diagnostic is $99 and comes off the repair when you approve it. You get the part, the price and the warranty before any work starts.

What Appliance Repairs Really Cost: The Benchmark

These figures are not survey answers or national averages assembled from other websites. They are the finished invoices from Neighborville’s own repairs between 2024 and 2026 in Florida, Texas and Georgia, counting only jobs where a repair was priced above the diagnostic visit.

Neighborville priced repairs, 2024 to 2026: median and middle half by appliance
AppliancePriced repairsMedianMiddle half
All appliances668$355$255 to $427
Refrigerator, freezer and ice maker247$375$250 to $462
Washing machine159$352$257 to $416
Dryer136$354$284 to $390
Dishwasher64$308$254 to $375
Oven, range and cooktop62$363$291 to $458

The “middle half” is the range that contains the central 50% of repairs: a quarter cost less, a quarter cost more. If your quote sits inside that band for your appliance, it is an ordinary price for an ordinary repair. The full breakdown, with method and charts, is on real appliance repair cost data.

Where Your Quote Falls: The Price Bands

Medians tell you the centre. To judge a specific quote, it helps to know how the whole distribution is shaped.

Read it like this. A $480 dishwasher quote is above what 9 in 10 of Neighborville’s dishwasher repairs cost, so it deserves a close look at the part. A $480 refrigerator quote is above most but well inside the normal spread, because refrigerators carry the most expensive parts in the house. A $480 oven quote is ordinary for a control board or a gas valve.

Under about $300

The bottom third of real repairs. These are the simple parts: door switches, fuses, belts, igniters, drain pump clearing, defrost thermostats, a water inlet valve. Quotes here are rarely a problem. If anything, check that the diagnosis is right, because the cheap part is sometimes fitted when the real fault is the board driving it.

$300 to $450

The heart of the market, and where most repairs on every appliance land. Motors, pumps, heating elements, fans, valves and many sensors. A quote here is normal. What matters is that the part is named.

$450 to $600

The upper part of normal. Control boards, main boards with displays, washer bearings and some refrigerator fan and defrost combinations sit here, as do premium brands where parts simply cost more. Ask which part and whether it is an original manufacturer part.

Over $600

About 7% of Neighborville’s repairs. This band is mostly sealed-system refrigeration work, high-end built-in appliances and multi-part repairs. A quote here is not wrong in itself, but it is the point where a second opinion costs very little compared with what is at stake, and where the age of the machine should enter the conversation. The repair or replace calculator does that arithmetic.

Read the Quote Itself: Seven Things It Should Say

The number is only half of a fair quote. The other half is what the document tells you. A low number without these is not a good deal; it is an unknown one.

What a complete appliance repair quote contains
ItemWhy it matters
The failed part, by name“Repair dryer” is not a diagnosis. “Replace heating element” is
Parts and labour shown separately, or at least the part identifiedLets you check the part price yourself
The diagnostic fee, and whether it is creditedA $99 credited fee and a $99 added fee are a $99 difference
The total, in writing, before work startsProtects you from a different number at the end
Warranty length and what it coversParts only, labour only, or both — and for how long
Whether a second visit is includedOrdered parts mean a return trip; it should not be billed twice
Original or aftermarket partsBoth can be fine; you should know which you are paying for

How to Check the Part Price Yourself

The part is the one element of a quote you can verify in five minutes from your phone. Ask the technician for the part number, which is printed on the part or listed in the parts diagram for your model. Search for it on the manufacturer’s parts site or a large appliance parts retailer. You will usually see a retail price.

Expect the part to cost more on the quote than online. The company is carrying stock, sourcing the correct part for your exact model, absorbing the cost when a part turns out to be faulty out of the box, and warrantying it once fitted. A modest markup is how every repair business works. What you are checking for is a part listed at several times its retail price, or a part whose number does not match your model at all.

Labour is the part people misjudge. A repair price covers the drive, the diagnosis, the time to strip and reassemble the machine, testing afterwards and the warranty. A $40 part that takes an hour and a half to reach inside a dishwasher is not a $40 repair, and a quote that prices it that way is not being honest either.

What Moves a Quote Up or Down

The brand

Built-in refrigeration, professional-style ranges and European dishwashers carry dearer parts and often take longer to access. A Sub-Zero or Thermador repair landing above the median is expected. A mainstream top-load washer landing far above it is not.

The part

Boards and sealed-system work push quotes up; switches, belts and igniters keep them low. The same symptom can have a cheap cause and an expensive one, which is why a quote should always name the part rather than the symptom.

Access

A stacked washer and dryer, a built-in refrigerator or an under-counter unit in a tight space takes longer to work on safely.

Age and part availability

Parts for machines more than ten to twelve years old can be scarce and expensive, and sometimes no longer made. That is a reason to check how long your appliance is expected to last in the appliance lifespan database before approving a large repair.

Fair Price, Fair Decision: The Age Question

A quote can be perfectly fair and still be the wrong thing to spend money on. The widely used rule of thumb is that a repair costing more than about half the price of a comparable new appliance, on a machine already past roughly half its expected life, is worth comparing seriously against replacement. That is a starting point, not a law: a $400 repair on a well-built nine-year-old washer can still be excellent value.

Our repair or replace cost comparison sets out the arithmetic appliance by appliance. A good technician will discuss this with you openly rather than leave it to you to raise.

Signs a Quote Is Not Fair

Some quotes fail not on the number but on how they are presented.

Warning signs in the quote, not the price
What you seeWhy it is a concern
A firm repair price over the phone, before anyone has seen the machineEither a bait price that will grow on site, or a guess
Several parts replaced “to be safe”Shotgun repairs inflate the bill without a diagnosis behind them
Pressure to approve on the spot “because the price goes up tomorrow”Repair prices do not expire overnight
A large deposit demanded before the part is even identifiedYou are paying for something nobody has named
No warranty, or a warranty only on the partYou carry the cost if the fix fails
The diagnostic fee is mentioned only after the visitThe first number you were told was not the real one

There are more of these, covering the company rather than the quote, on red flags of a bad appliance repair service.

When a Second Opinion Is Worth It

A second opinion costs another diagnostic visit, so it is not worth it for a $250 repair that sits squarely in the normal range. It is worth it when the quote is in the top tenth for your appliance, when the diagnosis names a sealed-system or main-board failure, when the technician could not explain what failed in plain words, or when you were pressured to decide immediately. In those cases the second visit is cheap insurance against a large mistake.

How Neighborville Quotes a Repair

The diagnostic is $99. The technician tests the machine, names the failed part and gives you the total before touching anything. If you approve, the $99 comes off the repair price. If a part needs ordering, the second visit to fit it is part of the same job. Every completed repair carries a 90-day parts-and-labour warranty. Appliance-by-appliance detail is on the repair cost guides for refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers and ovens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if an appliance repair quote is fair?
Compare it with real repair prices for the same appliance and check what it contains. In Neighborville’s own book of 668 priced repairs the median was $355 and the middle half ran from $255 to $427. A fair quote also names the failed part, states the diagnostic fee and whether it is credited, gives the total in writing before work starts, and states the warranty.
What is a normal price for appliance repair?
Most repairs land between about $255 and $427, with a median of $355 across our completed work from 2024 to 2026. By appliance, our medians are $375 for refrigeration, $352 for washers, $354 for dryers, $308 for dishwashers and $363 for ovens, ranges and cooktops. Nine in ten repairs were under $550.
Is $500 too much for an appliance repair?
Not automatically. About 13% of Neighborville’s repairs cost more than $500, mostly control boards, sealed-system refrigeration work and premium brands. For a dishwasher or dryer, $500 is above nine in ten of our repairs and deserves a close look at the named part. For a refrigerator or built-in oven, it can be ordinary. Either way, ask for the part number.
Should the diagnostic fee be included in the repair price?
Practices vary, which is why you should ask before booking. At Neighborville the diagnostic is $99 and it is waived when you approve the repair, so you pay the repair price rather than the repair price plus the visit. If you do not go ahead, the $99 covers the visit and the diagnosis.
Can I check the price of the part myself?
Yes. Ask for the part number, then look it up on the manufacturer’s parts site or a large parts retailer. Expect the quoted part price to be somewhat higher than retail, because the company sources the correct part, carries the risk of a faulty part and warranties it. A part priced at several times retail, or one that does not match your model, is the thing to question.
Why do two companies quote very different prices for the same repair?
Usually because they diagnosed different parts, one is quoting original parts and the other aftermarket, or one includes the warranty and second visit while the other does not. Sometimes one is a low phone price that will change on site. Compare the named part and what is included, not just the total.
When should I get a second opinion on a repair quote?
When the quote is in the top tenth for your appliance, roughly above $550 for most machines, when it names sealed-system or main-board failure, when the technician cannot explain the fault plainly, or when you are pressed to decide immediately. For an ordinary repair inside the normal range, a second diagnostic usually costs more than it could save.
Is it worth repairing an old appliance if the quote is fair?
It depends on age and the size of the repair. A common rule of thumb is to compare seriously against replacement when the repair is more than about half the price of a comparable new machine and the appliance is past roughly half its expected life. Our repair or replace calculator and lifespan database do that arithmetic for each appliance.
