What It Is and What It Is Not
A modern dishwasher has two pumps and confusing them leads people to the wrong repair. The circulation pump — often called the wash motor — drives water up to the spray arms during the wash. The drain pump is a separate, smaller unit that runs only during the drain step and pushes water out to the waste. They fail differently and cost differently.

- Drain pump failing: the wash is fine, water is still in the tub at the end

The hum-without-flow row is the most useful line on this page. A jammed impeller is not a broken pump: something hard has wedged between the blades and the housing, the motor cannot turn it, and clearing the obstruction restores the pump completely. Glass chips are the usual culprit, followed by fruit stones and small hardware that fell off something being washed.
Before Blaming the Pump
Three things upstream of it fail more often and cost far less, so they should be ruled out first.
- The filter. Blocked mesh starves the pump of water. It runs, it whines, and nothing much moves. Twist it out, wash it under a hot tap, hold it to the light
- The sump. Sponge it dry and feel around it carefully — expecting glass — for anything that does not belong. Half the pump complaints we see end here

How the Pump Actually Fails
Four distinct ways, and they are worth separating because the repair differs.
A jam. Something hard reaches the impeller and stops it. The motor is undamaged and the fault is mechanical obstruction. Clear it and the pump works as before. This is the commonest of the four and the cheapest.
Bearing wear. The shaft bearings dry out and the pump becomes noisy, then inefficient, then seizes. The progression usually takes months and the noise is the warning. A pump that grinds is telling you it has time left but not much.
Winding failure. The motor’s windings open or short and it stops entirely — silence at the drain step. Sometimes preceded by a machine that tripped its breaker. This one needs the part.
Repeated overload. The slow killer. Running cycle after cycle into a blocked drain makes the pump work against a closed path and overheat, cycling on and off its thermal protection until the windings degrade. This is why running a dishwasher repeatedly when it will not empty is a bad idea: a free jam becomes a paid pump.
What Ends Up in the Impeller

If the Pump Is Genuinely Dead
Once a winding has failed the part is the only route, and there are two sensible questions to ask before agreeing. First, is the part available for this model, because on machines over roughly a decade old that is not guaranteed and it changes the decision entirely. Second, what else on the machine is tired — a pump on a dishwasher whose door seal is perished and whose baskets are rusting is money going into a machine with other bills queued behind it.

The drain step listened to before anything is opened, since the sound alone separates a jam from an electrical failure; the filter and sump cleared and inspected for glass and hardware; the impeller turned by hand to feel for obstruction and for bearing roughness; the pump’s winding resistance measured rather than inferred; the voltage at the pump confirmed during a live drain step, which is what distinguishes a dead pump from a control that never energises it; the hose checked for kinks, internal narrowing and a fastened high loop; the air gap and disposal inlet confirmed clear; the sink waste tested independently; and the machine’s error history read where the model stores it.
