The drain hose carries waste water from the dishwasher’s pump to the kitchen waste, and how it is routed matters as much as its condition. Three rules cover almost everything that goes wrong with one.
- It must rise high before it drops — a high loop fastened under the worktop, or a worktop air gap. Without that, dirty water siphons back into the machine
- It must not be kinked or crushed against the wall when the machine is pushed back into its opening
- It connects either to a disposal inlet or a sink tailpiece tee, and a new disposal’s inlet ships moulded shut
- Internal grease build-up is real: a hose that has narrowed inside is replaced, not cleaned

The drain hose is the least glamorous part of a dishwasher and the source of a surprising share of its faults, because it is the one component that gets moved, bent and pinched every time the machine is pulled out. It is also the part most often installed wrongly in the first place.
Water where it should not be?
Hose faults are among the cheapest repairs we do. Book it and the fault is named before anything is ordered — the $99 diagnostic comes off the repair.
What the Hose Does, and Where It Goes
At the end of a wash the drain pump pushes water out of the sump, into a corrugated hose, and up through the cabinet under the sink to the waste. There are two normal destinations. If there is a garbage disposal, the hose clamps onto the disposal’s dedicated dishwasher inlet, a stub on its upper body. If there is no disposal, it connects to a branch on the sink tailpiece — a tee fitting with a spigot for exactly this purpose.
Between the machine and that connection, the hose has to go up. Either it is clipped high under the worktop and then comes back down, which is the high loop, or it runs up to an air gap fitted through the worktop and down from there. Both prevent the same thing: water from the sink drain travelling backwards into the dishwasher through a hose that would otherwise be a straight downhill path.
That is the whole system. Pump, hose, rise, connection. Almost every hose-related fault is a failure of one of those four things, and the diagnosis order for a machine that will not empty is in dishwasher not draining.
The Faults, and How Each One Shows Up

The first two rows are the same fault seen from two angles, and between them they account for most of the hose problems we find. A hose that runs flat from the machine to the waste is a siphon waiting to happen, and the symptom — dirty water in a machine nobody has used — reads as something far more serious than it is.
High Loop or Air Gap: Which Do You Need?
Both solve the back-flow problem, and which one you need depends on where you live. Some jurisdictions require an air gap on the worktop; others accept a high loop. Local plumbing code is the authority here, and it is worth checking rather than assuming, particularly if you are replacing a dishwasher rather than repairing one.
- High loop. The hose is fastened as high as it will go inside the cabinet, usually to the underside of the worktop, before dropping to the connection. No parts, no holes, nothing visible
- Air gap. A small chrome or plastic fitting through the worktop or sink deck, with the hose going up to it and a second length coming down. It vents to atmosphere, so back-siphoning is physically impossible
- Both. Harmless, and common where a machine was installed under one rule and replaced under another
- Neither. The commonest installation fault we see, and the one we correct most often at no real cost
The failure mode of an air gap is worth knowing because it alarms people: when its internal passage blocks, water sprays out of the cover onto the worktop mid-cycle. That is the fitting doing its job in the only way it can, and clearing it takes a minute.
Replacing or Extending a Hose
A few practical points, in the order they matter.
- Match the machine’s own connection. Dishwasher hoses are not one universal size; the pump outlet and the waste connection can differ, and adapters are part of most kits for exactly that reason
- Do not join two hoses with a barbed connector if you can avoid it. Every joint is a place for grease to catch and a place to leak. One continuous hose of the right length is better than two of the wrong length
- Use proper clamps at both ends and check them after the first cycle, since a clamp that felt tight cold can weep when the hose warms
- Keep the total run short. Long runs with sags hold water, and standing water in a hose is where the smell in a dishwasher usually starts
- Watch the route when pushing the machine back. This is where most hoses are damaged — crushed between the machine and the wall, or crimped tight against a cabinet edge
- Check the loop is still up after any work at all. It is the first thing to be lost and the last thing anyone thinks to verify

Smell, Grease and Hard Water
A drain hose is a warm, dark, permanently damp tube with food residue passing through it several times a week, so it is the part of a dishwasher most likely to develop a smell. Two things make it worse: sags in the run that hold standing water between cycles, and grease that coats the inside wall and gradually narrows the bore.
In hard-water areas the coating builds faster, because scale gives grease something to key into. The result is a hose that drains progressively more slowly over a few years, which is easy to misread as a tiring pump. A hose in that state is replaced rather than cleaned — nothing you can pour through it will restore the bore, and the part is inexpensive.

Two Minutes With a Torch
Open the cabinet under the sink and look, because everything above is visible from there. You want to see the corrugated hose leave the dishwasher, climb to the underside of the worktop, be held there by a clip or a tie, then drop to either a disposal stub or a tee on the sink tailpiece, with a clamp at each end and no standing water anywhere in the cabinet. If all of that is true, the hose is installed correctly and you can stop looking at it.
What you are hoping not to see: a hose lying in a flat curve across the base of the cabinet, a hose with a tight bend where it disappears behind the machine, a clamp missing or replaced by a twist of wire, two lengths joined by a barbed connector, or a damp cabinet floor with a tide mark. Photograph what you find before you touch anything and it will save explaining it later.

Hose work sits at the bottom of that table. Correcting a missing high loop costs a cable tie and a few minutes; a new hose is one of the least expensive parts in the machine. What a Proper Check Covers
The machine pulled forward far enough to see the whole hose run; the hose checked along its length for kinks, crush marks, splits and perishing at the ends; both clamps checked and the connections examined for weeping; the high loop or air gap confirmed present, and fastened rather than merely tucked; the air gap opened and cleared where fitted; the disposal inlet confirmed open; the sink tailpiece tee checked for a partial blockage; the bore assessed for internal narrowing, since a hose that drains slowly with a healthy pump is a hose that needs replacing; and the sink waste tested independently, because a slow household drain mimics every one of these faults.
