Dishwasher Leaking: Where From, Why, and What It Costs

A leaking dishwasher deserves more urgency than a dishwasher that will not clean, because the appliance is fine and the kitchen floor is not. Under-counter machines leak into cabinet bases and under flooring where nobody sees it, and by the time a swollen plinth gives it away the water has been there for weeks.

Stop using it, and book. Most leak repairs are seals, hoses and clamps — the $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair when you approve it.
First: Stop It and Look
- Stop the cycle and switch the machine off at the wall or the breaker
- Shut the water supply. There is a valve under the sink or behind the machine; closing it removes the mains pressure from the equation
- Dry the floor and put paper down. Kitchen paper laid flat shows you exactly where fresh water arrives, which the puddle itself does not
- Look at the front seal and the bottom edge of the door for food debris, hardened residue or damage
- Note when it leaks: during the wash, only during drain, or all the time even when idle. These are three different fault families
- Look for foam. Suds coming out around the door is not a seal failure and no part will fix it
The paper trick is worth the two minutes. Under-counter machines hide their leaks, and knowing whether the water starts at the front edge or comes forward from underneath decides most of the diagnosis before anything is dismantled.

The idle-leak row is the one to act on immediately. A machine that puts water on the floor while switched off is leaking on the supply side, with mains pressure behind it and no limit to the volume. Shut the valve and leave it shut until it is repaired.
The Detergent Leak
Worth its own section, because it accounts for a real share of “my dishwasher is leaking” calls and no repair will help. Dishwashers are designed for low-foaming detergent. Put washing-up liquid in one — even a small squeeze, even once — and it generates foam that fills the tub, rises past the door seal and runs out of the front. The machine is working correctly; there is simply more volume inside it than the tub can hold.
The same happens with too much powder or gel in a soft-water area, with rinse aid spilled into the tub while refilling its reservoir, and occasionally with a rinse-aid dispenser that has cracked and is leaking its contents into the wash.
Clearing it takes patience rather than parts: bail out the foam, wipe the tub, and run one or two short rinse cycles with no detergent at all until the water runs clear. A tablespoon of vegetable oil in the tub knocks foam down quickly if it is really persistent. Door Seals and Doors
The door gasket is the most common genuine leak point at the front, and most of the time it is not perished — it is dirty. Food residue and grease build on the sealing face and hold the door a fraction open, which is enough for water thrown by the spray arms to find its way out. Wipe the gasket and the tub lip with hot soapy water and a cloth, run a finger round the whole perimeter feeling for hardened deposits, and try it again before concluding the seal has failed.
A genuinely failed gasket is flattened, split, or has come out of its channel. That is a straightforward part. Less straightforward is a door that no longer sits square, which shows as a leak at one corner only: hinges wear, springs stretch, and a door that has been leaned on or used as a shelf can bend. A door out of square also lets steam escape, so look for a cabinet front above the machine that has swollen or delaminated — that is the same fault telling you it has been going on a while.
One more front-edge cause: an overfilled machine. Load a large tray so it deflects the spray straight at the door and water will find the seal’s weakest point. If the leak only happens on certain loads, that is what is happening.
Flood Protection, and Why Not to Just Reset It
Most machines built in the last decade have some form of leak protection — a float in the base, a moisture sensor, or a valve that shuts the supply off. When it trips, the machine typically stops mid-cycle, sometimes with an error indication, and refuses to run again.
The temptation is to reset it and carry on, and that is exactly the wrong move. The device tripped because water reached somewhere it should not, and resetting without finding out where simply removes the only warning you have. Pull the machine out, look at the base tray and the cabinet floor, and find the water before running another cycle. A dishwasher that trips its flood protection twice has told you the same thing twice.
Leaks That Come From Inside the Tub
Two causes sit inside the machine rather than at its edges, and both are easy to check while you have the door open.
- A broken spray arm. The arms are hollow tubes with metered holes; crack one at the end and it stops metering and starts jetting. A jet aimed at the door will beat any gasket, and the tell is a leak that only appears on some loads or some cycles. Spin each arm by hand, look for splits, and check nothing is fouling it
- A cracked or corroded tub. Rare on plastic tubs and not uncommon on older stainless ones at the seams, particularly where hard water has sat. This is the one leak where replacement usually beats repair, because the tub is the machine
Both are worth ruling out before anyone talks about a pump seal, because they cost far less to establish. A tub crack is also the only fault on this page where the honest answer may be a new machine, and the age-based version of that judgement is worth reading before you decide.
Hard Water Makes Every Leak More Likely
Scale does two things that matter here. It builds on the door gasket’s sealing face, where it hardens into a ridge that holds the door a fraction open — the same effect as food residue but harder to remove. And it accumulates in the sump and on the pump seal, where it works as an abrasive every time the pump turns.
The practical consequence is that in a hard-water area a dishwasher’s seals need cleaning more often, not just its filter. Wipe the gasket monthly with hot soapy water, keep the rinse-aid reservoir topped up since it reduces deposits across the whole tub, and run a descaling cycle every few months. Leak repairs sit in the lower half of that distribution, because gaskets, clamps, hoses and valves are inexpensive parts. What a Proper Diagnosis Checks
The machine run with paper laid down and the floor watched, so the arrival point is observed rather than inferred; the detergent identified, because foam is not a leak; the door gasket cleaned and then inspected along its whole perimeter; the door checked for square, and its hinges and springs for wear; the tub examined for cracks and for corrosion at the seams on older machines; the spray arms checked for a broken end that jets water at the door; the supply fitting and inlet valve checked with the machine idle and under pressure; the drain hose and both clamps checked through a live drain step; the sump gasket and pump seal inspected from below; the base tray and any float or moisture sensor examined to see why protection tripped; and the machine levelled, since a tilted tub carries water to the wrong place.
