The single most useful thing to do before touching anything is to listen. A disposal gives you one of three sounds when you flip the switch, and each maps to a different problem with a different fix and a different cost.
If it hums but the grinding plate doesn’t turn, the motor is getting power but something is physically stopping the impeller plate. If it’s completely silent — no hum, no click — the motor isn’t getting power at all, which means a tripped internal reset, a tripped breaker, a bad wall switch, or a motor that has finally burned out. And if it runs but water pools under the cabinet, you have a leak, and the location of that leak decides whether it’s a cheap gasket or a dead unit.

The silence: reset button, power, or a dead motor
A disposal that makes no sound at all has lost power somewhere between the breaker and the motor. The first stop is the reset button — a small red (sometimes black) button on the bottom or lower side of the unit that pops out when the thermal overload trips, which happens after a jam, an overload, or simple age. Press it firmly; if it stays in and the disposal runs, you’re done. If it pops back out immediately, the motor is drawing too much current, which points at a jam you haven’t fully cleared or a failing motor.
If the reset is already seated and there’s still no sound, work back through the chain: the wall switch, the outlet under the sink (test it), and the breaker. Many disposals are wired through a switched outlet or a dedicated breaker, and either can fail or trip independently. Only after power is confirmed at the unit and the reset won’t hold does the diagnosis land on a burned-out motor — and a dead motor is the point where replacement almost always beats repair, because the motor is most of the cost of the whole unit.
The leak: where it drips decides everything
A leaking disposal is the one symptom where the location is the entire diagnosis. A drip from the top, where the disposal meets the sink flange, is usually failed plumber’s putty or a loose mounting ring — a genuine, cheap repair. A drip from the side, at the dishwasher hose connection or the drain elbow, is a gasket or a hose clamp, also fixable. But water seeping from the bottom or the body of the unit itself means the internal grinding chamber has corroded through, and that is not repairable. A 1/2 HP galvanized-steel unit jammed repeatedly by fibrous or hard waste runs its thermal overload over and over, and the same standing moisture that rusts the chamber from inside is what eventually breaches it. This is why the repair-or-replace decision so often skips repair: by the time a budget unit fails, the cause is usually the part you can’t fix — the motor or the chamber — not the part you can.
The practical upshot for diagnosis is that age plus symptom tells you almost everything. A two-year-old disposal that hums is a jam, fix it. A nine-year-old budget unit that leaks from the bottom is finished, replace it. A silent unit of any age gets the reset-and-power check before anyone spends money.

Clearing a Humming Disposal, Step by Step
The hum is the single most common disposal complaint, and it is also the one most often fixed in ten minutes with no parts. What you are hearing is the motor energised and the flywheel held still by something wedged between it and the grinding ring. The motor cannot turn, so it draws heavily and heats up — which is why the procedure below starts with switching it off rather than trying again.
- Switch it off at the wall switch, then at the breaker. Both. A disposal that starts while your hand is in it is a serious injury, and the wall switch alone is not enough assurance
- Look inside with a torch. Do not reach in blind. Most jams are visible: a bone fragment, a fruit stone, a bottle cap, a spoon handle, a shard of glass
- Lift the obstruction out with pliers or tongs, never fingers. Long-nosed pliers reach the ring gap where things wedge
- Free the flywheel with the hex key. There is a hex socket in the centre of the underside of the unit, and most disposals ship with a small key for it. Turn it back and forth until the flywheel moves freely through a full rotation
- No key? Use a broom handle from above, levering against one of the grinding lugs to rock the flywheel loose. Wooden, not metal
- Press the reset button on the underside of the unit. The thermal overload has almost certainly tripped while the motor was stalled, and the machine will stay dead until it is reset
- Restore power and test with cold water running. A brief run, then listen: a healthy unit spins up immediately and sounds even
- If it hums again, switch off and repeat the flywheel check — a jam that returns usually means a fragment is still in there
Two things worth saying plainly. Never put your hand into the chamber, even with the power off at the breaker — the grinding ring is sharp and broken glass is common in there. And never use a chemical drain cleaner on a disposal: it will not shift a mechanical jam, and it leaves a caustic liquid sitting around the seals and in the chamber where somebody has to work.
When the Hum Is Not a Jam
Most hums are obstructions, but three other cases produce the same sound and it is worth knowing them, because carrying on cranking the flywheel will not help.
- A seized flywheel from corrosion. On a unit that has sat unused for months, particularly a second-home kitchen, rust can lock the assembly. It often frees with the hex key and then runs normally, but it is a warning that the chamber is corroding
- A failing start winding or capacitor. The motor hums because it is energised but cannot start turning at all. The tell is that the flywheel spins freely by hand and the unit still only hums, which rules out a jam entirely
- Worn bearings. The unit turns but sounds laboured and hot, and it trips its overload after a short run rather than immediately. This is a unit near the end of its life rather than one with something stuck in it
The distinguishing test is the hex key. Free the flywheel until it turns easily through a full rotation by hand, reset the overload, and try again. If it still hums with a flywheel that moves freely, the fault is electrical or mechanical inside the motor, and that is the point at which a replacement unit enters the conversation rather than more cranking.
What Actually Causes the Jams
Knowing the list is how you stop repeating the fix. In order of how often we find them: fruit stones and olive pits, bone fragments from roasting trays, bottle caps and small hardware, cutlery that fell in unnoticed, shellfish shells, and fibrous waste — celery strings, corn husks, artichoke leaves — which wraps around the flywheel rather than grinding.
Two more that are worth naming because they cause slow damage rather than an immediate jam. Coffee grounds and eggshells do grind, but they settle in the trap downstream and build a sludge that eventually restricts the drain and puts back-pressure on the whole assembly. And grease poured down a disposal solidifies in the pipe past it, which is the commonest reason a unit that grinds perfectly well still leaves a sink that drains slowly.
The habits that prevent almost all of it: run plenty of cold water throughout and for several seconds afterwards, feed waste in gradually rather than packing the chamber, scrape stones and bones into the bin, and cut fibrous waste short if it goes in at all.
