An oven that will not turn on at all is a different fault from one that turns on and stays cold. Three of the causes cost nothing to fix.

This is the fault where owners most often conclude the oven is finished and most often turn out to be wrong. A modern oven has several ways of deliberately refusing to work, and they all look identical to a failure from the front.

The Free List, in Order

  • Cycle the breaker properly. Fully off, pause, fully on — both halves of the double breaker together. A breaker can trip on one leg without looking tripped, and on an oven that leaves you with a lit panel and no heat, or nothing at all
  • Look for a control lock. Almost every electronic oven has one, usually shown by a padlock icon or the word LOCK, and it makes the panel ignore every press. It is released by holding a specific pad, and the sequence differs by model — check the manual rather than guessing
  • Check for a locked door. If the door will not open and a lock indication is showing, the oven has not finished a self-clean cycle or has not released afterwards. It will refuse to run until it does
  • Rule out Sabbath mode. It disables the display and most controls by design and it is easy to enter by accident. The manual has the exit
  • Rule out a timer or delayed start. An oven waiting for a programmed time looks inert and is behaving correctly
  • Rule out demo or showroom mode on a machine bought from a display floor: panel alive, appliance disabled
  • Cut power for five minutes. Off at the breaker, wait, back on. It clears a locked-up control, which is a genuine and common cause of an unresponsive panel

The Self-Clean Trap

Worth its own section because it produces a genuinely alarming version of this fault. A self-clean cycle runs the cavity far hotter than cooking does, and the oven locks the door mechanically for the duration and until the cavity has cooled. Two things then go wrong.

The lock does not release. The motorised latch fails, or the control never decides the cavity is cool enough, and the oven sits with a locked door refusing to do anything. Give it several hours from cold first — many release on their own once the temperature genuinely drops. Then cut the power for five minutes and try again.

The cycle takes something else out with it. That extreme heat is hard on the temperature sensor, the door hinges, the seal and the control board, and a self-clean is a common moment for one of them to fail. So an oven that ran a self-clean and then would not turn on at all has usually not coincidentally broken — the cycle is what finished off a part that was already tired.

Which is the practical argument for using self-clean sparingly rather than as routine maintenance: wiping spills while they are fresh does the same job without putting the whole appliance through that thermal load.

The cooktop row is a useful free test on a range. If the cooktop works normally while the oven is dead, a good deal of the supply and the appliance is proven fine, which pushes the diagnosis toward the oven’s own circuit, its relay or the control rather than the house wiring.

When It Is Genuinely the Control

Sometimes it is, and it is worth knowing what that looks like so it is neither dismissed nor assumed. A failed control board typically gives you one of three pictures: a panel completely dead with the supply proven good at the appliance, a panel that lights but will not respond to anything with the lock ruled out, or a panel that behaves erratically — flickering, resetting, showing odd characters, accepting a setting and then losing it.

Two things are worth insisting on before anyone fits one. First, that the supply has been measured at the appliance on both legs rather than judged by the breaker looking fine, because a lost leg imitates several control faults. Second, that the touch membrane has been tested separately from the board behind it — a worn membrane is a cheaper part and a very common cause of “the panel does nothing”, especially on ovens under a heavily used cooktop.

Wall Oven or Range Changes the Visit

Not the fault, but everything about how long it takes to reach — and it is worth saying when you book rather than being discovered on arrival.

The double wall oven row is the one that most often surprises everyone. Those units are genuinely heavy and the upper cavity is above shoulder height in a cabinet, so pulling one for a control board is a different job from sliding a range forward. Knowing in advance means the appointment is scheduled with the time and the hands it needs.

Write the Code Down Before You Clear It

If the display is showing anything — a code, letters, a flashing pattern — photograph it before doing anything else. Cutting the power to clear a locked-up control also erases what the oven was trying to tell you, and on an intermittent fault that record is often the only hard evidence there is.

The same applies to the sequence of events. When did it start. Did it fail suddenly or gradually. Did it follow a self-clean cycle, a power cut, or work in the kitchen. Does it come back after cooling. That history is worth more to a diagnosis than any guess about which part failed, and it costs nothing to write down while it is fresh.

Note the spread on built-in ovens: $255 to $485 for the middle half, which is wider than the freestanding figure because access varies so much. What a Proper Diagnosis Involves

The supply measured at the appliance on both legs, since a lost leg imitates several control faults and a breaker that looks fine can be tripped on one half; any control lock, Sabbath, demo, timer or delayed-start mode ruled out before parts are discussed; any displayed code read and recorded rather than cleared; the door latch and its motor tested, especially on an oven that has run a self-clean; the door switch checked, because an oven that does not believe its door is shut will refuse to run; the touch membrane tested separately from the control board; the control’s outputs observed on a start attempt; the wiring and terminal block inspected for heat damage; and on a range, the cooktop tested independently to establish how much of the appliance is actually working.

Can a tripped breaker stop an oven turning on completely?
Yes, and in a confusing way. An electric oven runs on two 120-volt legs, and losing one can leave you with a dead panel or a lit panel with no heat depending on which leg went. A double breaker does not always look obviously tripped when it has gone on one half, so switch it fully off and fully on rather than inspecting it. If it works and then dies again, have the circuit checked instead of resetting it repeatedly.
Why did my oven stop working right after a self-clean?
Because a self-clean cycle is the hardest thing an oven ever does to itself. The cavity runs far hotter than any cooking temperature, and that heat is hard on the temperature sensor, the door latch, the hinges, the seal and the control. So an oven that fails during or just after one has usually not broken by coincidence — the cycle finished off a part that was already tired. It is the practical reason to use self-clean sparingly.
Is a dead panel always the control board?
No, and it is the assumption worth resisting because a board is the most expensive part in the appliance. Before agreeing to one, insist that the supply has been measured at the oven on both legs and that the touch membrane has been tested separately from the board.
