A microwave’s capacitor holds a lethal charge after the plug is out, and it does not discharge on its own. Check the outlet, the breaker and the door — nothing beyond that. The $99 diagnostic comes off the repair.
A microwave that has gone completely dead is, unusually, the version with the best odds of a free fix — because the commonest causes are outside the appliance. It is also the version where the internal answer is often a fuse that blew for a reason, and the reason matters more than the fuse.
The Free Checks, in Order
- Test the outlet with something else — a lamp, a phone charger. This one step resolves a real share of these calls
- Check the breaker, and switch it fully off and on rather than just looking at it. A breaker can trip without looking obviously tripped
- Look for a GFCI outlet on that circuit, including in a nearby room or a garage. A tripped GFCI kills a downstream outlet while the breaker looks fine
- Try a different outlet if it is a countertop unit and the cord reaches one on another circuit
- Check the cord and plug for scorching, a burnt pin or a melted socket face. If you find any of that, leave it unplugged and say so — that is a circuit problem, not just an appliance one
- Open and shut the door firmly, then try again. On many machines a latch that has not registered leaves the panel dead-looking
- Check for a control lock, which on some models blanks or freezes the panel. The manual has the release sequence
If the outlet is live, the breaker is on, no GFCI is tripped and the cord is undamaged, the fault is inside the machine — and that is where the checking stops.

Two rows deserve emphasis. A machine that tripped the house breaker has told you there is a short in it, and repeatedly resetting the breaker to see if it holds is how a contained fault becomes a burnt wiring harness. And a machine that dies when hot and revives when cold is almost never electrically faulty at all — it is overheating, which on an over-range unit means grease-filled filters and blocked vents.
Why the Line Fuse Is Not the Answer
Every microwave has a fuse in its supply, and on a dead machine it is very often blown. It is tempting to treat that as the fault, replace it and move on. That is the wrong instinct, and it is worth knowing why before anyone quotes you for a fuse.
That fuse is a last-resort protective device. It does not fail from age or fatigue — it blows because something drew far more current than it should have. Usually that something is one of three things: an interlock switch that shorted as the door was closed, a failing high-voltage component, or a damaged wiring harness.
Fit a new fuse without finding the cause and one of two things happens. It blows again immediately, which is the good outcome. Or it holds for a while over a fault that is still there, which is the bad one. A proper repair replaces the fuse and identifies what took it out, and on this appliance the door interlocks are the first place to look.
The Touch Panel Case
If the display is alive and the buttons are not, the machine is not dead at all — its input has failed, and that is a different and often cheaper repair. Membrane touch panels wear out, and they wear out fastest exactly where microwaves usually live: above a cooktop, in heat and steam and cooking grease.
The signature is partial. A few buttons stop responding while the rest work, or a row goes, or the panel needs pressing harder than it used to. That progression points squarely at the membrane rather than the control board behind it. A whole panel that is completely unresponsive while the clock still shows is more ambiguous and needs testing to separate panel from control.
Worth ruling out first, because it costs nothing: many machines have a control lock that makes every button ignore you, usually released by holding a specific pad for a few seconds. The sequence varies by model, so check the manual rather than guessing.
Why Over-Range Units Die Sooner
If yours is mounted above the cooktop, it is working in conditions no countertop unit ever sees, and that shortens the life of specific parts in a predictable way.

The maintenance that follows from that table is small and almost nobody does it: wash or replace the grease filters every few months, replace the charcoal filter if the unit recirculates rather than ducting outside, and wipe the panel rather than scrubbing it. Those three add years to an over-range microwave, and their absence is why the same model dies faster over a busy cooktop than in a quiet corner.

Fuses, interlock switches and touch panels are inexpensive parts, so a dead microwave often lands below that median. Built-in and over-range units are where repair clearly makes sense regardless: they are fitted into cabinetry and matched to the kitchen, so almost any part beats replacing the unit and the joinery around it. What a Proper Diagnosis Involves
The outlet tested under load rather than just for presence of voltage; the breaker and any GFCI on the circuit checked; the cord, plug and socket examined for heat damage, because a burnt socket face is a circuit finding and not an appliance one; the line fuse checked — and if it has blown, the cause traced rather than the fuse simply replaced; every door interlock switch tested individually, since a shorted one is the commonest reason a fuse goes; the control lock ruled out before any part is discussed; the touch membrane tested separately from the control board; the thermal cut-outs checked along with the whole airflow path, including grease and charcoal filters on an over-range unit; and the high-voltage side inspected by someone equipped to discharge the capacitor safely first.
