The oven door is the part of the appliance people treat as furniture — leant on, sat on by children, used as a shelf for a heavy roasting tin — and it is a precision assembly holding a seal against several hundred degrees. Most of what goes wrong with it is mechanical, visible and fixable.
Check the Free Causes First
- Pull every rack out and look at the runners. A rack sitting a few millimetres proud, or fitted the wrong way round, stops the door by a hair — and it looks like a hinge problem
- Check nothing is behind the door liner. Foil, a dropped tray, a baking sheet stored in the cavity
- Look at the latch at the top of the opening. If it is part-way across, the door will not seat, and it may release on its own once the oven is properly cold
- Look for warped trays pressing against the door, especially on a full oven
- Check the seal is in its channel all the way round. Gaskets pop out of their clips and then hold the door open
- Look at the door from the side, closed. It should sit parallel to the front of the oven; a gap that is wider at the top or on one side tells you which hinge has gone

The last row is the one not to attempt at home. An oven door is a layered assembly with glass panels held in tension, and taking one apart without knowing the sequence tends to end with broken glass. If the inner pane has shifted or something is rattling inside the door, that is a job for someone who has done it before.
Test the Seal Properly
A door that appears shut can still be leaking, and the test takes a sheet of paper and two minutes. Close the door on the paper and pull. You want consistent resistance everywhere: repeat it every few inches all the way round, along the top, both sides and the bottom.
Where the paper slides out with no drag, the seal is not making contact at that point. One slack spot is usually the gasket — perished, flattened or out of its clip. A slack top with a tight bottom is usually the door rather than the gasket, because that is what a stretched hinge spring produces.
Why it matters beyond baking: an oven that leaks heat runs longer to hold temperature, browns unevenly, and puts that escaping heat into the cabinetry around it and into the control panel above the door. So a seal is not a cosmetic part, and it is one of the cheaper ones in the appliance. What Bends Hinges
Almost always weight on an open door, and it is worth naming because it is entirely preventable. An open oven door is a lever arm with a hinge at one end, and it is not designed to carry load.
- Resting a heavy roasting tin on the open door while transferring it — the single most common cause we see
- Children sitting or hanging on it, which bends both hinges at once
- Using it as a step or a shelf, including standing on it to reach a cupboard
- Pulling a stuck rack while braced against the door instead of the frame
- Slamming it, which does not bend hinges quickly but shortens the life of the springs and the seal
- Moving the appliance by its door handle, which is how a lot of hinge damage happens during kitchen work
Hinges are replaceable and the job is contained. The reason to know the list is that a repaired door will bend again if the habit continues, and that is the one part of this fault a technician cannot fix.
Why the Door Is a Precision Assembly
It looks like a slab with a handle. It is actually four things doing four jobs, and knowing them explains why small damage has large consequences.

The Outer Glass Getting Hot
Worth mentioning because owners often report it as a separate problem when it is the same one. An oven door has multiple glass panels with air gaps between them, and that construction is what keeps the outer surface at a temperature you can touch. Heat escaping past a failed gasket, or a door sitting out of square, short-circuits that design: hot cavity air reaches places it was never meant to.
So an outer door panel that has become noticeably hotter than it used to be is often reporting the seal rather than the glass. Same for a control panel above the door that has started to feel hot, or a display that has begun behaving oddly — escaping heat rises straight into the electronics, and that is one of the ways a cheap gasket turns into an expensive control board.

The cavity emptied and every rack, runner and tray checked for obstruction, because that is free and it is a real share of these; the door observed closed from the side to establish where it stands off, since that identifies which hinge or spring has gone; both hinges inspected for bending, wear and correct engagement in their slots; the springs assessed for stretch and for breakage; the self-clean latch and its motor checked, especially on an oven that has recently run a cycle; the gasket tested around its whole perimeter with paper and inspected for perishing and for displacement from its channel; the door assembly checked for movement between its panels; the hinge fixings and the frame examined, since a hinge that has been forced sometimes damages what it bolts to; and the door realigned and retested rather than declared fixed.
