A microwave’s capacitor stores a lethal charge and holds it after the machine is unplugged. This is the one appliance where there is no safe DIY layer beyond the door and the vents. Book it, and the $99 diagnostic comes off the repair.

Every other appliance on this site has a list of things you can check yourself. A microwave does not, and it is worth being blunt about why: the capacitor inside holds enough charge to kill after the plug is out, and it does not discharge on its own. Read the outside, tell us what it does, and leave the cabinet closed.

What You Can Safely Check

  • Test with water, not food. A cup of cold water for one minute: if it is not noticeably warm, the heat has genuinely gone. Food can mislead you
  • Listen at the start. A working microwave changes tone when the magnetron energises — a hum layered over the fan. Silence under the fan is a strong clue
  • Watch the light and the turntable. Both working with no heat is the classic high-voltage failure; nothing working at all is power or a fuse
  • Push the door firmly and try again. A door that has dropped or a worn latch stops the interlocks confirming, and no heat is the result
  • Check the vents. On an over-range unit the grease filter and the upper vents block, the machine overheats and the thermal cut-out trips
  • Try a different outlet for a countertop unit, and check the breaker for a built-in one
  • Note any smell. A burnt or fishy electrical smell points at the transformer or the magnetron and is worth saying on the phone

The sparking row is the one to act on immediately rather than investigate. Arcing inside the cavity usually means the waveguide cover — the small mica panel on the side wall — has burnt through, and running the machine in that state damages the magnetron behind it. It is a cheap part and an expensive thing to ignore.

Why the Door Matters More Than It Looks

A microwave has several interlock switches in its door latch, wired so that the machine cannot possibly produce microwaves with the door open. That safety design is also a common cause of a no-heat complaint: when one of those switches wears out or the door drops on its hinges, the control still runs the fan, the light and the turntable but will not release the high-voltage circuit.

Two things point at it. The machine behaves perfectly except for heat, and pressing the door firmly closed while starting it sometimes brings the heat back. On over-range units it is more common than on countertop ones, because the door is heavier and it gets pulled on.

The switches themselves are inexpensive. What matters is that they are replaced as a set and adjusted properly, because a mis-set interlock is a safety component defeated rather than repaired.

Over-Range Units and Blocked Airflow

An over-range microwave does two jobs, and the second one is what kills the first. It vents the cooktop below it, so its filters fill with cooking grease, and a blocked filter means the machine cannot cool itself while it runs. The thermal cut-out then trips, which presents as a microwave that heats for a minute and then stops heating.

Three things worth doing on any over-range unit. Wash or replace the grease filters underneath every few months — they slide out and most are dishwasher-safe. Check the charcoal filter if the unit recirculates rather than vents outside; it is a separate part and it is routinely forgotten for years. And make sure the upper vents are not blocked by a cabinet or by a hood cover that was fitted later.

This is also the reason an over-range microwave in a heavily used kitchen fails sooner than the same model elsewhere. It is not a weaker machine; it is a machine doing extra work in its own exhaust.

Why the Low-Voltage Side Keeps Working

This is the part that confuses people most, and it is worth understanding because it explains why a dead-cold microwave looks perfectly fine. There are effectively two machines in one cabinet.

The low-voltage side runs everything you interact with: the display, the touch panel, the timer, the interior light, the turntable motor and the cooling fan. All of it works off ordinary household voltage and none of it has anything to do with heating.

The high-voltage side exists to feed one component — the magnetron. A transformer steps the mains up enormously, a capacitor and a diode turn it into what the magnetron needs, and the magnetron turns that into the microwaves that heat the food. Break any link in that chain and the low-voltage side carries on cheerfully: the display counts down, the plate turns, the fan blows, and nothing gets warm.

So “everything works except the heat” is not a strange fault. It is the expected appearance of a high-voltage failure, and it is why the water test matters more than watching the machine.

What Shortens a Microwave’s Life

  • Running it empty or nearly empty. With nothing to absorb the microwaves the energy goes back into the magnetron. A single accident is survivable; a habit is not
  • Blocked vents and greasy filters, which cook the machine in its own heat and are the leading cause on over-range units
  • A burnt waveguide cover left in place, which lets arcing reach the magnetron
  • Slamming the door, which wears the latch and the interlock switches faster than anything else
  • Metal in the cavity — foil, a fork, a decorated plate — which causes arcing that damages the cover and the cavity paint
  • Very long high-power runs, which are what the thermal cut-outs are there to interrupt

Two of those are free to stop doing today, and between them they account for most of the no-heat calls we take on machines under five years old.

Where repair is clearly the right call is built-in and over-range units: those are fitted into cabinetry, matched to a kitchen and priced accordingly, so a door switch, a filter, a waveguide cover or even a magnetron is a fraction of replacing the unit and the joinery around it. What a Proper Diagnosis Involves

A measured heat test rather than a guess, using a known volume of water and a timed run; the door latch and every interlock switch tested and adjusted; the line fuse checked, because a blown one is often a symptom of what failed rather than the fault itself; the high-voltage circuit tested by someone equipped to discharge the capacitor safely first; the magnetron’s condition assessed; the waveguide cover inspected for burn-through; the thermal cut-outs checked and the reason for any trip investigated rather than merely reset; the cooling fan and the whole airflow path examined, including grease and charcoal filters on an over-range unit; and the cavity checked for arcing damage.
