Florida sits on limestone, limestone dissolves, and Pasco County reports more sinkhole activity than any other county in the state, with this community sitting in the area usually described as its centre. What most houses experience is not dramatic: a slab that settles a little unevenly over years, by an amount nobody notices walking across the kitchen. A range standing on that floor does three things.
It cooks unevenly. A tilted oven cavity means a cake batter sits deeper at one side, a roasting tin drains its fat into one corner, and a tray of anything liquid bakes thicker at one end. The appliance can be holding temperature perfectly and still produce a cake that is done on one side. On a gas oven, the igniter is the answer far more often than anything else, and the way it fails explains a symptom that confuses people. A hot surface igniter does two jobs at once: it gets hot enough to light the gas, and the current it draws is what physically opens the gas safety valve. As the igniter ages its resistance rises, so it draws less current, and there is a window where it still glows brightly but no longer opens the valve. So the oven glows, waits, and goes out without ever lighting. People replace the valve for it. The igniter is the part, and it runs $150 to $325 fitted.
Twenty or Thirty Degrees Off Is a Sensor
The second most common oven complaint is not a dead oven, it is an oven that lies. Cakes take an extra fifteen minutes, or a recipe that always worked now needs a different setting.
In a modern oven the temperature is measured by a small resistance probe, usually a thin metal rod projecting into the top left of the cavity, whose resistance changes with heat. The control reads it and decides when to fire the element or the burner. As a sensor drifts out of specification, the control does exactly what it is told and holds the wrong temperature perfectly steadily, which is why the symptom is consistent rather than erratic and why nothing you change in the kitchen makes any difference.
The test is cheap. Put an oven thermometer in the middle of the cavity, set 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and leave it a good twenty minutes after the preheat signal so it has cycled a few times. A modest offset of ten or fifteen degrees can usually be corrected in the oven own calibration setting through the control menu, and that costs nothing. A consistent gap of twenty-five degrees or more, or an oven that cannot hold within a wide band, is a sensor at $100 to $230.
Three other things produce a similar complaint and are worth ruling out. A door that no longer seals, because a sagged hinge or hardened gasket lets heat out continuously. A convection fan that has stopped, on an oven where the recipe assumed it was running. And the levelling issue above, which is the one that produces uneven results rather than uniformly wrong ones. The distinction is useful: an oven that is uniformly cool is a sensor or an element, while an oven where one side browns more is usually geometry or a stopped fan.
Three Housing Eras, Three Repair Decisions
The population here went from about 7,000 in 1990 to 35,929 at the 2020 census, and older communities including Denham, Ehren and Gowers Corner were absorbed along the way. That gives three kinds of kitchen, and the repair-or-replace answer differs in each.

It is also worth finding your model and serial number and your closing date, because manufacturer and builder cover may apply and we would rather tell you that than quietly do the work.
The Self-Clean Cycle, and Why We Are Cautious About It
A pyrolytic self-clean cycle works by taking the cavity to somewhere around 900 degrees Fahrenheit and holding it there long enough to reduce food residue to ash. It does clean the oven. It is also the most thermally punishing thing the appliance ever does to itself, and the failures that follow it are predictable.
The oven locks the door and runs far above cooking temperature for hours, and the heat soaks outward into places designed for cooking temperatures rather than cleaning temperatures. The parts that fail are the thermal fuse, a one-time device that opens and takes the whole oven dead with it; the control board and display, which sit above the cavity in most designs; the door latch mechanism, which can jam and leave the door locked shut; and the door hinges and gasket.
A significant share of the dead ovens we are called to were working perfectly the day before somebody ran a self-clean, usually the week before a holiday or family visit, which is exactly the week the oven is needed. On a built-in it matters more, because the consequence is a repair on an appliance you would rather not replace.
Gas, Propane and Where We Stop

Induction cooktops are electronics with a coil under glass. Getting More Years Out of an Oven Here
