Untreated groundwater on this part of the coast routinely carries dissolved iron, and dissolved iron is invisible in the glass. It only becomes visible when it meets air and oxidises, which is precisely what happens when it is sprayed through a tub full of tumbling laundry.

The result is orange or brown staining, worst on whites, often appearing as blotches rather than an even tint, and getting steadily worse over months as the deposits build in the machine and re-release. Owners describe it as the machine rusting internally, and it is easy to see why. But the drum is stainless or coated plastic, and the parts that could rust are not in the water path in a way that would stain a load.

The test costs nothing. Wash the same load somewhere else on treated water, at a laundromat or a relative’s house on city supply. If it comes out clean, the machine is fine and the answer is water treatment. If it comes out stained, then there is something to look at inside the machine, and we should look at it.

On City Supply the Story Is Different

The blend exists because total dissolved solids and sulphate in the local sources rise during the dry season and the surface plant cannot meet the limits on its own.

For a washing machine that means moderate, variable water rather than either extreme. You will not see iron staining, and you will not see the aggressive scaling of untreated groundwater, but you also should not assume the water is soft. Dose detergent to the label rather than above it, run a hot cleaning cycle monthly with the machine empty, and wipe the door boot dry after the last load of the day. That is enough on this supply.

Wear by Cycles, Not by Years

North Port is a city that is occupied. The first is volume.
