Why Gas and Electric Age Differently

The three-year gap in the commonly cited service lives, about 14.5 years for gas against about 11.6 for electric, is not an accident and it is worth understanding because it changes what to expect.

The anti-tip bracket, $70 to $130. Not a fault at all, but it belongs on this list because it is missing on a surprising number of ranges and it is the one cheap job in a kitchen that is genuinely about safety.

Self-Clean, and Why It Matters More on an Older Range

A pyrolytic self-clean cycle locks the door and holds the cavity far above any cooking temperature for two to four hours to reduce residue to ash. Manufacturers design for it and most of the time nothing happens, but everything in the machine ages under that load and anything already near the end of its life tends to go during or just after the cycle.

Three casualties, in the order we see them: the thermal fuse, a one-shot device that opens and does not reset; the door lock motor or its switch, which has been holding a locked door at high temperature and sometimes refuses to release afterwards, leaving the oven locked shut; and the control board, which has spent hours somewhere hotter than it likes.

On a five-year-old range that is bad luck. On an eleven-year-old electric range it is the event that converts a working appliance into the board conversation, and it is entirely avoidable. If the oven needs cleaning before a holiday, do it by hand with a proper cleaner, which takes less time than the cycle anyway. If you do use self-clean, run it a week before you need the oven so there is time to deal with what it breaks, and take the racks out first on models that require it.

Propane, and the Conversion Nobody Finished

Where there is gas in this area it is usually propane rather than mains natural gas, and that produces a fault which is not a fault at all but which people replace ranges over.

Propane carries considerably more energy per cubic foot than natural gas and is supplied at a different pressure, so a range shipped from the factory for natural gas has to be converted before it will burn propane properly. The conversion has three parts: smaller burner orifices, a regulator change or setting, and an adjustment to the low-flame setting on each valve so the burner will still simmer. All three have to be done.

Half-finished conversions are common, because a range gets moved from a house on mains gas, or bought second hand, or delivered by somebody who changed the regulator and not the jets. The result reads as an old, tired appliance: tall lazy yellow flames instead of compact blue ones, soot on the underside of pans, burners that either roar or go out with no usable simmer, and an oven that overshoots and undershoots and never settles.

How to check in ten seconds: look at a burner flame in a dim kitchen. It should be blue, compact and stable with at most a very small yellow tip. Tall, soft, orange or yellow flames on a range that is otherwise sound are a fuel and setup problem rather than a worn appliance. Then look at the data plate, which states which fuel the appliance is currently configured for. Where that plate says one thing and the tank outside says another, we have found the fault before opening anything.

Getting More Years Out of a Range Here

Use self-clean sparingly and never in the week you need the oven. On an older electric range in particular, that one habit is the difference between a machine that keeps going and one that needs a board.

Check the door seal once a season for hardened or flattened sections and watch whether the door closes square. Check the range is level, especially if the flooring has been replaced. Keep spills out of burner ports on gas and dry the igniter thoroughly after any cleaning.
