Iron in the Water, Not Rust in the Drum
This is the single most common misdiagnosis on well properties, and it costs people whole machines. Whites come out of the wash with an orange or yellow-brown cast, towels acquire a tint, and there is a ring of colour where the water sits in the tub. The conclusion drawn is that the drum is rusting through, so the machine is condemned and replaced. Six months later the new machine is doing exactly the same thing.
A stainless steel wash basket does not rust in any way that stains laundry. What is staining is dissolved iron in the well water, which oxidises on contact with air and detergent and deposits onto fabric. It is the same iron that puts an orange line in the toilet tank and a tint on the shower tile. If those two things are also happening in the house, the washer is not the problem and no repair to the washer will change the outcome.
Two things make it worse without anyone realising. Chlorine bleach reacts with iron and sets the stain rather than lifting it, so the more bleach is used on the yellowed whites the more permanent the yellow becomes. And hot water drops more iron out of solution than cold, so a hot wash stains harder than a cold one. Households fighting the stain with hot water and bleach are, in good faith, doing the two things that guarantee it.
The fix is at the supply, not the appliance: an iron filter or a water softener rated for the iron level, which needs a water test to size properly. On the laundry itself, a rust-removing laundry product rather than chlorine bleach will lift what is already there. Hard Water, Detergent and the Grey Load

On a genuinely hard supply the working answer is a softener at the house, or failing that a detergent formulated for hard water plus a water-conditioning additive, and never more than the marked dose.

There is also a chemistry point. Heavy bleach use goes straight into the tank and suppresses the bacteria the system depends on. Occasional bleach is not a problem; a household that bleaches every load, which is exactly what an iron-staining household tends to start doing, is quietly working against its own septic system while not fixing the stain.
Will Not Drain: the Order We Check
A washer that fills and washes but sits full of water at the end of the cycle is the most frequent single call we take, and the cause is usually cheap. The order matters because each step rules out the next.
First, the pump filter. Most front-load machines and many newer top-loaders have a small access door at the bottom front hiding a filter and a drain plug. Coins, buttons, hair pins and the pocket contents of a working household collect there, and on a property with sediment in the water they collect faster. Put a shallow tray and towels down, because the drum will empty out of that opening. Many machines that are declared dead are cleared here in ten minutes at no cost.
Second, the drain hose. Look for a kink behind the machine, which happens whenever a washer is pushed back into place after being moved, and check that the hose is not pushed too far down the standpipe. If it goes in too deep it can siphon, and the machine will appear to drain constantly or never finish. Will Not Spin, and Why It Is Rarely the Motor
People assume a machine that will not spin has a dead motor, and that assumption is what makes them replace a repairable washer. In practice the motor is well down the list.
A washer will refuse to spin if it has not drained, because no sane control spins a tub full of water. So the first question on a no-spin is whether the drum is empty, and if it is not, the whole section above applies instead.
Next is the door lock or lid switch. A front-loader will not spin unless the door lock reports locked, and a top-loader will not spin unless the lid switch reports closed. Both are consumable parts that fail with use, both are inexpensive, and a machine that fills and washes but goes silent at the spin is pointing straight at them.
Then there is load balance. A single heavy item, a bath mat, a comforter, a pair of jeans on their own, lands to one side and the machine detects the imbalance and refuses rather than damaging itself. It will often try repeatedly, redistribute, and give up. Splitting the load is the whole fix.
Only after those come the mechanical causes: a worn drive belt on belt-driven machines, a failed shifter or actuator on direct-drive top-loaders, and on older top-loaders the transmission itself. A belt is cheap. A transmission on a fifteen-year-old machine is the point at which we tell you what a new one costs instead.
Slow Fill, Sediment and the Inlet Screens
A machine that takes forever to fill, or reports a long-fill error and stops, is usually not sick. There are small mesh screens where the hoses attach at the back of the washer, and their job is to keep grit out of the inlet valve. On well water carrying sediment they clog, and once they clog the machine gets less water than it expects in the time it expects it.

Two other free checks belong here. Confirm both taps are fully open, which sounds insulting until you have seen how often a tap gets knocked half closed while something is moved behind the machine. And on a cold-only cycle, confirm the cold tap specifically, because a machine drawing on one line will happily hide a closed valve on the other until you run a cycle that needs it.
If the screens are clean and the taps are open, the inlet valve itself is the candidate, and hard water is the usual reason it fails. Scale narrows the orifice the same way it narrows a refrigerator valve, and the valve eventually cannot pass its rated flow. It is an ordinary part and an ordinary job.
Leaks and Where They Actually Come From
Water on the laundry floor is alarming and the source is often not where the puddle is. In rough order of how often we find them:
The fill hoses. Rubber supply hoses are under mains pressure every hour the taps are open, and they fail with age. A hose that bursts while the house is empty will put out water for as long as it takes someone to come home. Braided stainless hoses cost very little and should be changed every five years as a matter of course; on a property that has a pressure tank and a pump cycling, that discipline matters more, not less.
The drain hose connection. A hose that has worked its way out of the standpipe delivers the whole pump-out onto the floor, and it looks like a catastrophic machine failure. Check it before assuming the worst.
The door seal on a front-loader. Debris and a torn or perished bellows let water escape at the bottom of the door during the wash. Wiping the seal dry and leaving the door ajar between washes both extends its life and deals with the smell that goes with it.
Overdosing detergent. Suds overflow is a genuine cause of water on the floor and is entirely self-inflicted, and it is more likely in the hard-water households described above, where people have been steadily increasing the dose to fight the grey.
The tub seal. The one that is not cheap. On a front-loader a leaking tub seal usually comes with a rumbling or grinding noise on spin, because the bearings behind it are going the same way. That is the repair where the conversation turns to whether the machine is worth it.
Vibration, Floors and the Two Kinds of House Here

Against those, almost everything else is worth doing. A pump, a valve, a lid switch, a door lock, a belt, a set of hoses, a cleared filter: all of them are ordinary parts on a machine that has years left, and on a well and septic property they are the failures you should expect to see more of rather than signs that the appliance is finished.
