Four Cheaper Things That Look Like a Dead Board
This is the most useful section on the page, because a board on a premium appliance is the most expensive part in the kitchen and the one most often assumed.
The thermal fuse. A one-shot safety device that opens when the oven cavity exceeds a limit and does not reset. The most common thing that opens one is a self-clean cycle, which holds the cavity far above cooking temperature for hours. The machine finishes the cycle, cools down, and the next morning nothing responds. If anybody has run self-clean recently, this is the first thing we check.
The door lock assembly. On a self-clean oven the door lock is an interlock the control must see. If the lock motor or its switch fails, particularly after the heat of a clean cycle, the control may refuse to operate at all and often leaves the door locked shut as well. That is an alarming symptom and an ordinary part.
The supply. An electric range or wall oven runs on 240 volts, and a double-pole breaker can trip on one side only or half-trip so it looks closed. Lose a leg and the controls, which run on 120 volts, come up perfectly while the elements get nothing. In a county with this many outages that is a routine finding.
The temperature sensor. A resistance probe in the cavity that tells the control how hot it is. When it drifts or fails the machine can refuse to heat, display an error, or run wildly out of calibration, all of which read as a control fault. It is $120 to $250 against $200 to $450 for a board.
Induction: Ventilation, Pans and Codes
Induction is common in the newer and refitted kitchens here, and it is worth understanding because two of its three most frequent complaints are not faults at all.
An induction hob heats the pan directly with a magnetic field rather than heating the glass and letting the glass heat the pan. That means all the work is done by power electronics sitting a few centimetres under the surface, and those electronics need to stay cool. Every induction hob therefore has a cooling fan and a specified ventilation path, usually a gap at the back of the cabinet or a clearance above a drawer unit.
Blocked ventilation is the commonest complaint. When a kitchen is refitted or a drawer is replaced with a solid front, or the space below is packed with storage, the hob can no longer move air over its electronics. It protects itself by cutting power mid-cook. Owners describe it as switching off at random. It is not random and it is not a failed board: it is a thermal cut-out doing its job, and clearing the ventilation is the fix.
The pan is the second. Induction only works with ferrous cookware. If a magnet does not stick firmly to the base, the hob cannot see the pan at all, and a base that is only partly magnetic, which is common on multi-ply pans, gives intermittent detection that looks exactly like a failing element. Test with a fridge magnet before assuming anything.
The codes are meaningful. Induction controls have real sensors and their error codes are specific rather than generic, so writing down the exact characters is genuinely useful. Photograph the display if the code clears quickly.
Built-In Ovens and What They Do to the Estimate

We are saying treat it as a deliberate event: wipe out loose residue first so there is less to burn and less smoke, run it when you are in the house and awake, ventilate, take the racks out on models that require it, and run it at least a week before you actually need the oven so there is time to deal with whatever it breaks.
