On most of our location pages the replace-it question is simple, because a standard 30-inch freestanding range drops into a standard 30-inch opening with no carpentry. In mainland Sarasota that assumption breaks often enough that we stopped making it.
The reason is when the houses were built. The bulk of this city’s stock went up from the late 1940s through the 1970s, and kitchens of that period were laid out around the appliances of that period. Twenty-four inch ranges were entirely normal in a modest house, and twenty-inch apartment ranges turn up too. A kitchen built around one of those has a cabinet run that closes in on the appliance from both sides.
What we find, over and over, is one of three situations.
The opening was widened at some point and now takes a 30-inch range, in which case a replacement is straightforward and the arithmetic is normal.
The opening is still original and a 24-inch range is sitting in it. Twenty-four inch ranges are still made, so a replacement exists, but the choice is narrow and the price per unit is not much below a 30. Repairing a sound 24-inch range is frequently the better value simply because the alternative is a thin market.
Somebody has already forced a wider appliance in, with the counter notched or the cabinet trimmed. That works, but it usually leaves the range hard against something on one side, which matters for heat and for getting it out to service.
The practical instruction is simple and it costs nothing: measure the width of the opening, the depth from the back wall to the front of the counter, and the height under any overhead cabinet, before you go shopping. Take the numbers with you. It is the difference between an appliance purchase and a cabinetry project.
Built-In Wall Ovens, Which Sarasota Has More Of
This city has an unusual concentration of built-in wall ovens and separate cooktops, and there is an architectural reason for it.
From 1941 to 1966 Sarasota was the centre of a regional movement in postwar modern architecture, the Sarasota School, associated with Ralph Twitchell and Paul Rudolph among others. Its houses were built on strict adherence to function, modular composition and articulated components, with open plans and very few interior walls. A freestanding range is a lump of appliance standing in a room; a cooktop set into a counter with the oven built into a cabinet wall disappears into the architecture. The idea spread well beyond the pure examples into the ordinary builder stock of the same decades.
That matters because a built-in oven is not a free-standing appliance and cannot be treated as one.
It must match a cabinet cutout. Wall oven dimensions have shifted over the decades, and a cutout framed in 1963 frequently has no current equivalent. Replacing means either finding a model that fits or modifying the cabinetry, which brings in a joiner and a counter fabricator. That is the situation where a $460 control board on a twenty-year-old oven can genuinely be the cheaper answer, and we will tell you so.
Access is from the front only. A built-in is serviced through its own opening, so a fault that would take twenty minutes on a freestanding range takes longer, and the appliance sometimes has to come out of the wall to reach the back. That is factored into the estimate rather than sprung on you afterwards.
The cooktop is a separate appliance. On a built-in installation the cooktop and the oven fail independently and are quoted independently. A dead cooktop element does not mean the oven is next.
The Self-Clean Cycle Is How Most Ovens Die
The most common cause of a completely dead oven, and entirely avoidable.
Pyrolytic self-cleaning locks the door and heats the cavity to roughly 880 degrees Fahrenheit, far above anything it sees in cooking. Everything inside experiences that: the door lock motor, the temperature sensor, the wiring insulation running near the cavity, the thermal fuse, and the control board behind the panel.
Two failures follow. The thermal fuse, a one-shot device, blows and does not reset. Or the control board is cooked by the heat rising past it. The classic sequence is that the cycle runs, the oven goes quiet, and afterwards nothing works, sometimes with the door still locked.
On a built-in in a period cutout this is the worst possible outcome, because the expensive repair and the expensive replacement are both expensive. It is the strongest argument on this page for simply not running the cycle.
Do not run self-clean on an oven older than about eight years. Wipe the cavity while it is still warm from cooking, use a low-odour cleaner on cold surfaces, and pull the racks out to wash separately, since most racks discolour and stick permanently after a pyrolytic cycle anyway.
Ordinary Faults, and What They Cost
Away from self-clean the list is the usual one, and most of it is worth fitting.

The gas oven igniter, $150 to $320. A glow bar that has to draw enough current to open the safety valve. As it ages it still glows but draws less, so the valve opens late or not at all. The door hinge or gasket, $110 to $240. A door that no longer closes flat leaks heat, which shows as slow preheat and uneven results long before anybody suspects the door.
Period Parts, and When They Simply Stop Existing
The other consequence of working on older appliances is availability, and it is worth being straight about how that actually goes, because the picture is better than people fear in one direction and worse in another.
The mechanical parts last extremely well in the supply chain. Bake and broil elements, surface elements and their receptacles, thermostats, oven sensors, igniters, door springs and hinges are made in patterns that changed slowly, and aftermarket manufacturers keep producing them because the installed base is large. A thirty-year-old electric range needing an element is usually a routine job.
The electronics are the opposite. A control board is specific to a model and a production run, aftermarket makers rarely tool up for old ones, and when the original stock is gone it is gone. What exists then is the refurbished market, where a board is repaired or salvaged from a scrapped appliance. That is a legitimate route and we will use it, but the supply is unpredictable, the warranty is shorter, and it can take days rather than hours.
Cosmetic and glass parts sit in between. A smooth top for a discontinued cooktop may or may not still exist, and the answer is model-specific.

Skip self-clean on anything older than about eight years, and skip it entirely on a built-in that sits in a period cutout, because there the consequences of losing the appliance are much larger.
