Read the Flame Before Anything Else
A gas burner is one of very few appliance components that reports its own condition visually, continuously, for free. Almost nobody looks. The flame tells you whether the air-to-gas mixture is right, whether the ports are clear and whether anything is out of position, and it does so long before a burner actually stops working.
What a healthy flame looks like. Mostly blue, with a crisp inner cone at each port, steady rather than dancing, and quiet apart from a soft hiss. The tips may show a trace of colour but the body of the flame should be blue and the shape should be even all the way round the burner.
Yellow or orange, lazy and soft. That means too little air in the mixture and incomplete combustion. On a domestic cooktop the usual causes are a burner cap that is not seated properly on its base, ports partly blocked by spilled food, or debris in the air shutter. It also leaves soot on the underside of pans, which is a second visible symptom of the same thing. It is worth dealing with rather than living with, because incomplete combustion is inefficient and messier than a properly burning flame.
Uneven around the burner. If part of the ring lights strongly and part barely at all, the ports on the weak side are blocked. Spilled food bakes into them and hardens, and cleaning the burner cap surface does nothing because the openings are underneath and around the edge.
Lifting away from the burner, or roaring. Too much gas or too much air, and on a cooktop that most often means a burner cap seated incorrectly so the flame is escaping where it should not. Turn the burner off, let it cool, lift the cap and put it back squarely on its locating pins.
Cooking appliances are nearly triple their usual share of our work in this city, so if there is one page in our Coconut Creek set worth reading before you need it, this is the paragraph: look at your flames once, deliberately, this week. It takes a minute and it will tell you whether anything needs attention.

What Oven and Cooktop Repair Costs Here

|---|---|---|---|
| Coconut Creek, cooking appliances | not published | two local repairs, at $255 and $375 | 3 completed calls |
| South Florida, stove and cooktop | $350 | middle half $275 to $375 | 17 with a part replaced |
| South Florida, oven and double oven | $389 | middle half $295 to $398 | 13 with a part replaced |
| Company-wide, stove and cooktop | $359 | middle half $315 to $449 | 26 with a part replaced |
| Diagnostic visit | $99 | flat | applied to the repair when you approve it |
Two repairs cannot carry a median, so the jobs are printed instead, and both sit inside the regional stove and cooktop band of $275 to $375. That is what surface-burner work costs: spark modules, electrodes, switches and elements are inexpensive parts fitted in straightforward labour. The upper end of the oven range belongs to control boards and to built-in installations where the unit has to be unfastened and drawn out.
Match the Symptom to the Likely Cause
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow, lazy flame and soot on pans | Too little air: cap seated wrong, or blocked ports | Cool it, lift the cap, clean and reseat |
| Flame strong on one side of the ring only | Ports blocked with baked-on spill | Clear the ports with a pin, not a toothpick |
| Burner clicks continuously after it lights | Moisture or debris around the electrode | Dry the cap thoroughly and reseat it |
| One burner will not light, others do | Its electrode, blocked ports, or the switch | Check the ports and the cap position |
| No burner lights, no clicking at all | Spark module or the power supply | Check the breaker, then book |
| Gas oven lights some days, not others | Igniter weakening, the stage before it stops | Time how long it takes to light from cold |
| Electric oven will not heat at all | Bake element open, or the control relay | Look through the door for a break or blister |
| Runs 25 to 30 degrees off the set point | Temperature sensor or lost calibration | Oven thermometer, middle rack, 350 F |
Burner Caps, Ports and the Cleaning That Works
Most surface-burner complaints come down to three parts, and two of them you can maintain yourself.
The cap. The removable disc that sits on top of the burner base. It has to sit squarely on its locating pins, and if it is even slightly off it distorts the flame pattern, sometimes producing a burner that lights unevenly or clicks continuously. After any cleaning, lift each cap and set it back deliberately rather than dropping it into place. This is the single most common cause of a burner that started misbehaving right after the hob was cleaned.
The ports. The small openings around the burner base where the gas emerges. Spilled food gets into them and bakes hard, and once a port is blocked no amount of wiping the surface helps because the opening is underneath and around the edge. Clear them with a straightened paper clip or a fine pin, gently, with the burner cool and the gas off. Do not use a wooden toothpick, because it can break off inside a port and leave you worse off than you started.
The electrode. The small ceramic-tipped probe beside each burner that makes the spark. The classic complaint of a burner that keeps clicking after it has already lit is nearly always moisture or spilled food around that electrode, giving the spark somewhere else to go. Dry it thoroughly and make sure the cap is seated. If it still clicks with everything dry and properly positioned, the module or the switch is the next candidate, and both are routine repairs.
One habit worth adopting in a compact kitchen, where the hob is close to everything else: wipe boil-overs while the burner is cool but before the spill has been baked on by the next use. Most port blockages we clear are months of small spills rather than one dramatic event, and they would never have formed if the surface had been wiped at the time.
The Oven Above the Hob
In a compact kitchen the range is usually a single freestanding unit, so the oven and the cooktop share a cabinet and sometimes a control. Three oven complaints account for most of what we see, and all three sit at the inexpensive end.
Temperature drift. An oven running 25 or 30 degrees off the set point is normally the temperature sensor, whose resistance has drifted so the control acts correctly on bad information, or a calibration offset that has moved. The second is a setting rather than a part. Put an oven thermometer on the middle rack, set 350 F, let it cycle two or three times, and note the average rather than a single reading, because an oven always swings either side of its target as it cycles.
Uneven baking. Check the rack position first, because the middle rack is what recipes assume, and then the tin: a dark or non-stick tin absorbs radiant heat far more readily than a shiny aluminium one and browns faster at the same setting. Every oven also has hot spots, including new ones, which is why recipes ask you to rotate the tray.
Gas oven lighting intermittently. That is the igniter weakening. It has to draw enough current to open the safety valve, and as it ages it still glows and still looks healthy but no longer pulls the valve reliably. Intermittent lighting is the stage before it stops entirely, so it is worth booking while the oven still works part of the time rather than waiting for it to quit.
