Understanding the family makes every repair conversation clearer, because the badge tells you about the cabinet and the model number tells you about the parts.

The last row is the point. A drain pump, a shifter actuator, a motor coupler, a defrost heater or a lid lock is frequently the same component across several badges, which is why a premium machine should not carry a dramatically higher repair bill for the same fault. Check the Warranty Before You Pay Anyone
Worth ten minutes before you book us or anybody else. Manufacturers commonly cover specific major components for considerably longer than the general one-year term — sealed-system refrigeration parts are the standard example, and some laundry components carry extended coverage on particular models. The terms differ by model, by year of manufacture and by whether the appliance was registered.
So find the documents and read what is actually covered rather than relying on a rule of thumb. A covered sealed-system fault is a manufacturer conversation. A fan, sensor, pump, lock, coupler or actuator almost certainly is not covered past the first year, and an independent repair is the sensible route. If a fault looks like it falls in the covered category we will tell you rather than quote for it.
What We Work On, and What Usually Fails
- Washers. Will not spin, will not drain, lid lock, shifter actuator, motor coupler, imbalance. The detail is in Whirlpool washer not spinning
- Dryers. No heat, will not start, thermal fuse, rollers and belts, and long drying times that are nearly always airflow: dryer not turning on
- Refrigerators. Warm fresh-food section from a defrost or fan fault, ice makers, leaks: Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling
- Dishwashers. Not draining and not cleaning, both usually starting at the filter: not draining and not cleaning
- Ranges and cooktops. Elements, igniters, controls, and oven temperature that drifts — sensor first, element second, control last
- Microwaves, including over-range. No heat, door and turntable faults, control panels

Two things that table is good for. It tells you which category you are in before anyone quotes, so a number well outside the middle half deserves the question of which part and which system. And it shows where the money actually goes: dishwashers cheapest, refrigeration dearest, dryers the tightest spread of all because the parts that fail are small and standardised.
The Real Advantage: Parts
This deserves its own section because it changes decisions rather than just being interesting. The group builds a comparatively small number of platforms across a very large number of appliances, so the components that fail most are manufactured in enormous volume — and they stay in circulation for years after a model leaves the showroom.
In practice that means three things. A twelve-year-old machine with an ordinary fault is usually repairable at an ordinary price, where the same age of appliance from a low-volume marque can be a parts hunt with an uncertain ending. A technician can often carry the likely part rather than order it, which is why the model number given at booking turns a two-visit job into one. And the repair-or-replace arithmetic tilts toward repairing, because availability — not age — is the practical limit on fixing an old appliance.
It is still worth confirming availability for your specific model before work is agreed rather than assuming. But as a rule, “it is a Whirlpool” is a point in favour of repair.
Repair or Replace
Three questions, in this order. Is the part available for this model. What class of fault is it — locks, switches, fuses, sensors, actuators, couplers, belts, pumps and defrost components are ordinary work at any age, while washer drum bearings and sealed-system refrigeration are the jobs whose labour makes age matter. And what does the rest of the appliance look like, because a good pump in a machine with a perished seal and rusting racks is money going into a queue of other bills.

What a Diagnosis Involves
The model number recorded so the parts list is right; any stored fault history read rather than cleared, since an intermittent fault that will not present itself during a visit is often only visible there; the symptom reproduced where possible so the finding is observed rather than inferred; the free causes eliminated first — filters, hoses, loading, levelling, breaker legs, condenser coils — because a real share of calls end there; then the measurements: sensor resistance against specification, pump windings and the voltage actually reaching them, element and fuse continuity, achieved temperatures against set points, heat rejection and airflow; the mechanical drive checked by hand; and part availability confirmed for your model before anything is agreed.
You get the fault named, the part named, availability confirmed and the total quoted before anything is ordered, with the $99 coming off it when you approve the work.
Maintenance That Matters
- Do not overload laundry. It is the leading cause of coupler, suspension and bearing wear, and it costs nothing to fix
- Clean the dryer’s lint filter every load and the whole duct run yearly — that is drying time and fire risk together
- Dishwasher filter monthly, which prevents poor draining, poor cleaning and the smell in one go
- Condenser coils twice a year on refrigeration; it is the commonest reason a fridge slowly stops keeping up
- Run a hot maintenance wash monthly in the washer to shift detergent residue before it binds lint into a plug
- Wipe door seals on fridges, dishwashers and washers; residue on a sealing face holds a door fractionally open

If one of those fixes it, keep the habit rather than treating it as luck — every item on that list is maintenance that prevents the fault recurring. If none of them does, you have eliminated the free causes and a diagnosis starts from a much better place.
Model Numbers: Where to Look
On a top-load washer it is under the lid on the rim or on the back of the console; on a front-loader around the door opening or behind the filter hatch. Dryers carry it inside the door opening on the frame. Refrigerators put it inside the fresh-food compartment, on a side wall, the ceiling, or behind the bottom drawer. Dishwashers have it on the tub edge, visible with the door open. Ranges hide it behind the storage drawer or on the oven door frame.
Photograph the plate rather than transcribing it. These numbers run to a dozen characters and a single wrong digit orders a part that does not fit, which is the commonest reason a repair needs a second appointment. Reading it out when you book is genuinely the most useful thing a customer can do.
