Cleaning failures are usually about water, motion or chemistry rather than a broken part — and on Whirlpool-built machines the first four checks cost nothing.
- Water temperature. Run the kitchen tap hot before starting; a machine fed lukewarm water cannot dissolve grease or detergent
- Spray arms. Spin each by hand, and hold the holes to the light. Blocked jets and a fouled arm are the commonest single cause
- Filter. A blocked filter recirculates dirty water and starves the wash
- Detergent and rinse aid. Old tablets, no rinse aid, or hard water without a softening product
- Then parts: the circulation pump, the diverter, the water inlet valve, or a heater that no longer heats

This is the complaint most often solved without a technician, and it is worth twenty minutes of your own before booking. It is also the complaint where the machine is most often blamed for something the plumbing, the detergent or the loading is doing.

Water Temperature Is the Overlooked Cause
A dishwasher cleans with hot water and it does not make much of its own — most machines take hot water from the house supply and top it up with a heating element. If what arrives is lukewarm, the whole cycle is compromised: grease does not emulsify, detergent does not dissolve fully, and the machine has to spend its heating capacity catching up rather than holding temperature.
Two things cause it. A long pipe run from the water heater, so the first several litres reaching the machine are the cold water that has been sitting in the pipe — which is why running the kitchen tap until it is genuinely hot immediately before starting the cycle makes a visible difference. And a failed heating element or heater relay inside the machine, which means it never reaches temperature at all no matter what it starts with.
The distinguishing test is the dishes themselves. If glassware comes out cloudy and plastics stay greasy, and the machine’s own cycle is not noticeably long, suspect temperature. Spray Arms: Spin Them, Then Look Through Them
The single most productive physical check. Every arm should spin freely with a flick of a finger; if one catches, something is fouling it — a tall item in the basket, a fallen utensil, or the arm’s own bearing gummed with grease. An arm that cannot rotate washes one stripe of the machine and nothing else.
- Spin each arm — lower, upper, and the top spray head where fitted
- Take the lower arm off if it lifts easily and rinse it through under a tap, watching that water comes out of every hole
- Clear individual jets with a toothpick: seeds, labels and scale block them one at a time, so the machine gets gradually worse
- Check the feed the upper arm connects to, since a tower or duct at the back can be blocked as well
- Reload and look for anything overhanging that would stop an arm mid-rotation
- Check the arms are properly clipped back on; a loose lower arm loses pressure to the rest of the machine
Loading, Which Explains More Than People Accept
A dishwasher cleans by throwing water in straight lines. Anything that blocks a line stays dirty, and anything that shields another item shields it completely.

Worth testing deliberately: run one deliberately light, well-spaced load with the tap run hot first. If that comes out clean, the machine is fine and the answer is loading and temperature. If it still comes out gritty, you have a genuine fault and you have eliminated the variables.
Detergent, Rinse Aid and Hard Water
Three chemistry points that account for a real share of these complaints. Detergent ages: tablets and powder absorb moisture and lose effectiveness, so a box that has been open under the sink for a year is not doing what it did. Rinse aid is not a luxury — it changes how water sheets off surfaces, and without it glassware dries with deposits that look like poor washing.
And hard water works against everything. Scale coats the heating element, so it heats less efficiently; it blocks spray-arm jets one by one; and it leaves the film on glassware that owners describe as the machine getting worse. In a hard-water area a rinse aid and a periodic descaling cycle are the difference between a machine that cleans and one that does not, and the detail is in how hard water affects your dishwasher.
One thing to avoid: adding more detergent to compensate. Overdosing leaves residue that ends up as film on the dishes and slime in the sump, and in soft-water areas it is a cause rather than a cure.
When It Is Genuinely a Part
Having eliminated temperature, arms, filter and chemistry, four components are worth measuring.
- Circulation pump. The wash motor that drives water to the arms. A weak or failing one gives poor cleaning with perfect drainage — the mirror image of the fault on the drain pump page
- Diverter. On machines that alternate spray between upper and lower arms, a failed diverter leaves one level permanently starved. The signature is a load where the top rack is clean and the bottom is not, or the reverse
- Water inlet valve. Underfilling means the pump cannot generate pressure. Often shows as a machine that sounds strained
- Heating element or its relay. No heat means no grease removal and poor drying, and it can be measured rather than guessed

What the Residue Itself Tells You
Look closely at what is left on the dishes, because the type of deposit points at a different cause from the fact of a deposit.
- Gritty food particles, redeposited evenly: the machine is recirculating dirty water. Filter and sump
- Greasy film on plastics, glass looks fine: water temperature. Plastics hold grease longest
- White chalky film everywhere: hard water and no rinse aid. Not a mechanical fault
- Cloudy glassware that will not polish off: etching, which is permanent and usually means very soft water plus too much detergent
- Baked-on patches in one area only: a spray arm not reaching there — blocked jet, or an arm fouled by the load
- Everything wet as well as dirty: heating element, since drying and grease removal fail together
The etching row matters because it is the one problem no repair fixes. Once glass is etched the surface is damaged, and the answer is prevention: less detergent, rinse aid, and a cooler cycle for glassware. Chalky film, by contrast, wipes off with a vinegar rinse and comes back until the water chemistry is addressed.
Cycle Choice Is Doing More Than You Think
A short or eco programme uses less water, less heat and less time by design, and on a heavily soiled load that is simply not enough. Many owners set a machine to its quickest cycle permanently and then judge it on results it was never asked to deliver. If cleaning has been marginal for a while, run one heavy or pots-and-pans cycle and compare.
Sensor-driven cycles complicate this usefully. A machine that judges soil level will extend a cycle and add water when it detects a dirty load — which means a machine whose sensor is coated or whose filter is blocked reads the water as dirty for the wrong reason and can behave oddly. Spray arms, diverters, inlet valves and heating elements sit inside that middle half. What a Proper Diagnosis Checks
The incoming water temperature measured at the tap and the machine’s own achieved temperature assessed across a cycle; every spray arm spun, removed where possible and its jets checked individually; the arm feeds and any rear tower or duct checked for blockage; the filter and sump cleared, since they starve the wash as well as the drain; the detergent type, age and dose established, and the rinse-aid reservoir checked; water hardness considered and scale looked for on the element; the fill volume observed, because underfilling prevents pressure; the circulation pump’s current and output pressure judged rather than assumed; the diverter tested on machines that alternate levels, since one starved rack is its signature; the heating element and its relay measured; and the loading reviewed with the owner, because a light, well-spaced test load settles the question faster than anything else.
