The Defrost Pattern, and Why It Matters Here
Every frost-free refrigerator melts frost off its evaporator several times a day using a small heater, on a schedule set by the control. When any part of that circuit fails — the heater, its bimetal thermostat, or the control that schedules it — ice builds on the evaporator until air can no longer pass through it, and the fresh-food compartment goes warm while the freezer stays cold.

Find the Model Number Before You Call

The overnight defrost test is worth doing deliberately if you can spare the food: power off, doors open, several hours, then restart. If the fridge cools properly for a few days and then drifts warm again, you have confirmed the defrost circuit without any tools at all — and that is genuinely useful information to hand over.

The through-door row is worth flagging because it produces a complaint that sounds like cooling and is not. A fill tube that frosts over, or an ice maker that overfills, puts ice where the airflow should be — so a machine that has stopped cooling evenly may actually have an ice-maker fault. Do Not Keep Resetting It
Whirlpool machines with electronic controls will often accept a power cycle or a service reset, and it is tempting to use that as a fix. It is not one. A control that has stored a defrost fault and been cleared is a machine whose evidence has been erased, and the ice will rebuild on exactly the same schedule as before.
Two things are worth doing instead of resetting. Note the sequence of events — when it started, whether it faded or failed suddenly, whether an overnight defrost fixed it temporarily — because that history is what a technician uses. And leave the settings where they were, so the machine is behaving as it was when it failed rather than as it behaves on a colder set point.
