- Are both taps fully open? A half-open tap fills slowly; a closed cold tap on a cold-only cycle fills not at all
- Are the hoses kinked? Crushed against the wall when the machine was last pushed back is the classic
- Are the inlet screens clogged? Fine mesh filters in the hose couplings catch grit and scale, and they block
- Inlet valve — the electrically operated valve that lets water in. It fails, and it is a modest part
- Pressure switch, door lock or control — the machine will not fill until it is satisfied the door is shut and the drum is empty

This is the friendliest fault on a washing machine, because the cause is outside the appliance about as often as inside it. Taps, hoses and inlet screens account for a large share of these calls, and all three are checkable in ten minutes without tools.

The Ten-Minute Check
- Open both taps fully. Hot and cold: many programmes blend, and a shut hot tap stops a warm wash from filling at all
- Test the water pressure at the taps by disconnecting one hose into a bucket. A dribble means the problem is the plumbing, not the machine
- Pull the machine out and look at both hoses along their length for kinks and crush marks
- Unscrew each hose at the machine end — with the tap shut — and look for the small mesh screen in the coupling. Clean it with an old toothbrush under a running tap
- Check the drum is empty. A machine that has not drained will not fill, and that is a different fault
- Listen at the start of a cycle. A buzz or hum from the back with no water is the valve trying and failing; silence means it is not being told to open
- Check the door or lid is properly shut and that the lock clicks — no confirmation, no fill
The inlet screen is the single most satisfying item on that list. They are easy to forget because they are hidden inside the coupling, they clog gradually over years, and they are the reason a machine fills more and more slowly until it gives up. Cleaning them is free.

Two rows worth acting on directly. The drum-has-water row means you are on the wrong page and the fault is drainage — that is washer will not drain or spin. And the fills-without-being-asked row is a valve passing water when it should be shut, which will eventually overflow the drum: shut the taps between washes until it is fixed.
The Inlet Valve
Behind the machine, where the hoses connect, sits an electrically operated valve — usually a double one, hot and cold in a single body. The control energises a solenoid, the valve opens, mains pressure does the rest. It is a simple device and it fails in three recognisable ways.
It does not open. Solenoid coil failed, or the plunger stuck with scale. You hear a buzz and no water arrives. On a double valve one half can fail while the other works, which is why a machine sometimes fills on cold programmes and not on warm ones.
It does not close. Debris or scale on the seat means it passes water continuously, so the drum slowly fills while the machine is idle and can overflow. This one deserves urgency: shut the taps and leave them shut until it is replaced.
It is fine and nothing is telling it to open. The control has not sent the signal, because the door lock has not confirmed, the pressure switch reports the drum as full, or the board itself has failed. This is why measuring the voltage at the valve during a fill is the test that matters — it separates a dead valve from a machine that never asked.
Things People Mistake for a Fill Fault
- Modern machines use very little water. A high-efficiency drum that looks barely wet is normal; the clothes are wetted rather than submerged
- Water goes in behind the drum on many designs, so you may not see it enter through the door glass
- Load sensing means the machine weighs the laundry and decides the volume, so a small load genuinely gets less water
- A cold-fill-only machine heats internally, so a shut hot tap changes nothing — but on a hot-and-cold machine it stops warm programmes dead
- A pause before filling is normal: many machines lock the door, weigh the load and sometimes drain briefly before taking water
- Pressure drops during the day in some areas, so a machine that fills fine at night and struggles at seven in the evening may be reporting the mains, not itself

The Pressure Switch, and Why It Blocks Everything
A washing machine has no way of seeing inside its own drum. It measures the water level by pressure: a small chamber near the bottom of the tub is connected by a thin tube to a switch or an analogue sensor, and as the water rises the trapped air is compressed and the reading changes. Everything the machine does about water depends on that one reading.
Which is why a blocked pressure chamber produces such confusing symptoms. Detergent slime and lint collect in the chamber or the tube, the reading sticks high, and the machine concludes the drum is already full. It then refuses to fill — and refuses to spin, because it will not spin a drum it believes has water in it. Two symptoms, one cheap cause, and neither of them where you would look.
The reverse is also possible: a reading stuck low, so the machine keeps filling past where it should. Both versions are diagnosed the same way, by checking the chamber and tube for blockage and then testing the switch, and both are inexpensive to put right. It is the single best reason not to accept “it needs a control board” without that check having been done.
Hard Water Makes This Fault Common
Two parts of the fill system suffer in hard water. The inlet screens catch scale as well as grit, so they clog measurably faster; and the inlet valve’s plunger and seat build deposits that eventually stop it seating or opening cleanly. A machine in a hard-water area is genuinely more likely to arrive at this fault, and earlier.
The maintenance that helps is small. Clean the inlet screens once a year rather than never — it takes ten minutes with the taps off. Run the machine’s drum-clean programme, or a hot wash with a descaler, every couple of months to keep scale off everything downstream. And if the household has a softener, check it is actually working, because a lapsed one shows up in appliances before anyone notices it in the shower.

An inlet valve is a modest part with contained labour, so this fault normally lands at or below the median. Cleaned screens and reopened taps cost nothing at all, which is the reason to work through the free checks first. What a Proper Diagnosis Checks
Both taps confirmed fully open and the supply pressure tested into a bucket, since a plumbing problem cannot be repaired inside the appliance; both hoses checked for kinks and crushing; both inlet screens removed, inspected and cleaned; the drum confirmed empty, because a machine that has not drained will not fill; the door lock or lid switch tested for confirmation; the voltage at the inlet valve measured during a fill attempt, which is the test that separates a dead valve from a control that never energised it; each half of a double valve checked independently, so a hot-side failure is not mistaken for a whole-valve failure; the pressure switch, its chamber and hose checked for a false full reading; the drain hose height confirmed so water is not siphoning out as fast as it comes in; and the control’s fill logic and error history read where the model stores it.
