A washing machine holds and pumps more water than any other appliance in the house, at mains pressure, usually in a room with no drain in the floor. That combination is why a small leak deserves attention now rather than next month — the appliance will survive being ignored and the floor will not.
Water on the laundry-room floor?
Shut the taps behind the machine and book. Most leak repairs are seals, hoses and clamps — the $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair when you approve it.
First Five Minutes
- Stop the cycle and switch off at the wall or the breaker
- Shut both taps behind the machine. If the leak stops immediately, it is on the supply side and mains pressure was behind it
- Dry the floor and lay kitchen paper across it. Paper shows where fresh water arrives; a puddle does not
- Note when it leaks: filling, washing, spinning, draining, or all the time. Each points somewhere different
- Look for foam. Suds escaping is not a seal failure and no part will fix it
- Check the machine is level and on its feet rather than rocking, since a machine that walks tears its own hoses
The timing question is the one people skip and the one that matters most. A leak while filling is the inlet side; a leak while draining is the outlet side; a leak only at high spin usually means a seal that holds at rest and opens under pressure. Three different repairs.

Two rows are not appliance faults. The standpipe row is a household drain that cannot take the flow rate a washer pumps at, and it overflows around the hose — visible as water appearing at the wall rather than at the machine. The foam row is dosing, and it is the single most common reason we are called to a “leaking” machine that turns out to be working perfectly.
The Detergent Leak
High-efficiency machines use a fraction of the water older designs did, and they need detergent formulated to match. Put a normal dose of standard detergent into an HE machine and it generates far more foam than the drum can hold; the excess climbs, finds the door seal or the dispenser, and comes out. The machine has not failed. There is simply more volume inside it than there is space.
The same happens with any detergent overdosed, and it is easy to overdose because packaging is optimistic and soft water needs less than the label assumes. Liquid detergent in cold cycles compounds it, because the residue that does not rinse away builds up and foams on later washes.
Clearing it takes rinse cycles rather than parts: run two or three rinse-and-spin programmes with no detergent at all until the water runs clear. Then use an HE-marked product if the machine is HE, halve what you were using, and if the machine has a drum-clean programme, run it. The dosing detail is part of how to clean a washing machine.
Door Seals on Front-Loaders
The rubber bellows around a front-loader’s door is the most common genuine leak point on that design, and most of the time it is not perished — it is dirty. The fold at the bottom of the bellows collects lint, hair, coins and detergent slime, and once that layer hardens it holds the door a fraction open. Water thrown by the drum then finds its way out along the bottom edge.
Pull the fold open, clean it thoroughly with hot soapy water and a cloth, run a finger all the way round feeling for hard deposits, and check the same fold for the objects that collect there. Then look for damage: a bellows that has been torn by a bra wire or a zip usually fails at the bottom, where the water sits, and a tear the size of a fingernail is enough.
A perished or torn bellows is a real part and a real job, since it is clamped at both the cabinet and the tub. What it is not is a reason to replace a machine — it is contained work on an otherwise sound appliance.
Supply Hoses: the Leak Worth Preventing
The two hoses feeding the machine are under mains pressure every hour of every day, whether the machine is running or not, and they are the only failure on this page that can flood a house rather than wet a floor. A burst supply hose on an upstairs laundry is one of the more expensive things that can happen to a home.
- Check them by hand for bulges, crazing near the fittings, and rust at the crimps
- Replace rubber hoses on a schedule rather than on failure, and fit braided stainless ones when you do
- Renew the rubber washers inside the couplings; a weeping fitting is usually a flattened washer, not a cracked hose
- Hand tight plus a nip is enough. Overtightening splits the plastic collar on the valve
- Shut the taps when you go away for more than a few days, or fit a lever valve so it is a one-second job
- Leave a gap behind the machine so the hoses curve rather than kink against the wall
The Drain Filter Cap: the Silliest Cause
Worth naming on its own because it comes up so often. Front-loaders have a drain filter behind a small hatch at the bottom front, and the cap that closes it is a threaded plug with an O-ring. Clean the filter — good — then refit the cap without seating it fully, and the machine leaks from the bottom front corner on the next wash. It looks like a pump failure and it is a quarter-turn.
Two things to check if you have cleaned a filter recently: that the cap is screwed fully home, and that its O-ring is present, seated in its groove and not cut. Also worth noting that some machines drip a little from this housing for a cycle or two after being opened, as the sump refills; a leak that stops on its own within one wash was probably that.
A Machine That Walks Damages Itself
Levelling reads like a detail and behaves like a cause. A washing machine at 1,200 revolutions per minute puts real force into its own mountings, and if the cabinet is not sitting square on all four feet it rocks, then walks, then drags at its own hoses. Over a few months that pulls connections loose, chafes the drain hose against the wall, and stresses the tub seal.
Check it with a spirit level across the top in both directions, adjust the feet until it does not rock at all when you push a corner, and lock the feet with their nuts if they have them. On a wooden floor that flexes, a machine can be level and still walk; a sheet of plywood spreading the load usually solves it. This is five minutes of work that prevents a class of leaks entirely.

Most leaks land in the lower half of that: hoses, clamps, washers and a door bellows are inexpensive parts. The exception is the tub seal behind the drum, which is the one leak that carries serious labour because the machine has to come apart, and on an older machine that is the point where the arithmetic in how long washing machines last starts to matter. What a Proper Diagnosis Checks
A cycle run with paper on the floor and the machine watched at each stage, since timing decides the fault; the detergent type and dose established, because foam is not a leak; both supply hoses and their washers checked with the taps on and the machine idle; the inlet valve watched through a fill; the dispenser drawer and its housing checked for blockage; the door bellows opened, cleaned and then inspected all the way round for tears, particularly at the bottom; the drain filter cap checked for correct seating, which is a common and trivial cause; the pump housing, sump hose and all clamps examined from below; the tub seal assessed, since a leak that only shows at high spin points there; the drain hose and standpipe watched through a drain step; and the machine levelled and its feet locked, because a machine that walks damages its own plumbing.
