Why One Fault Produces Both Symptoms

Washing machines are built not to spin with water in the drum, and for good reason: spinning a drum full of water at high speed throws it out of the seals, unbalances the machine violently and puts water on the floor. So the control watches a pressure switch, or a level sensor, and will not release the spin until it is satisfied the drum is empty.

That interlock means any drain failure presents as a spin failure too. The clothes stay soaking, the drum stays full, and the machine either sits there or works through the rest of the programme without ever spinning. From the outside it looks like two things broke at once. From inside it is one fault and a safety rule doing its job.

Two rows deserve highlighting. The standpipe row, because a blocked house drain has nothing to do with the appliance and is easy to prove — watch the standpipe during the drain step and see whether water rises out of it. And the pressure switch row, because it is the one fault that genuinely blocks both functions at the electrical level rather than the mechanical one: the machine will not drain because it does not believe it needs to, and will not spin for the same reason.

Getting the Water Out

Before anything else you need an empty drum, both to save the laundry and to make any diagnosis possible.

  • Switch the machine off at the wall or the breaker
  • Find the drain filter — on most front-loaders, a small hatch at the bottom front, often with a short emergency drain hose behind it
  • Put down towels and a shallow tray. A full drum holds far more water than any bowl you own, so expect to empty the tray several times
  • Open the emergency hose slowly, let it run, and pinch it off when the tray fills
  • No filter hatch? Then lower the drain hose into a bucket on the floor and let gravity do it
  • Once empty, take the filter out, clear it, and feel inside the housing for anything hard — this is where coins and bra wires end up
  • Wring the laundry into a bucket rather than carrying it dripping across the floor

Sound Tells You Which Part

Start a drain or spin cycle and listen, because the sound narrows it down faster than anything visual.

  • Hum or buzz, no water moving: drain pump energised, impeller jammed. Clear the obstruction and the pump is usually fine
  • Complete silence at the drain step: no power reaching the pump, or a dead winding
  • Pump runs normally, water stays: the restriction is downstream — hose, standpipe or house drain
  • Drains fine, then a click and nothing: lid switch or door lock not confirming, so spin is refused
  • Motor revs but the drum barely turns: belt, clutch or coupler — and the drum will be empty, so this is a spin fault proper
  • Loud grinding during drain: debris loose in the pump housing, worth clearing before it wears the bearings

What Actually Blocks the Pump

The list is short and the same every time: coins, buttons, hair grips, the wires out of underwired bras, small screws, children’s socks, and a felted mat of lint bound together with the residue of liquid detergent. Bra wires are the classic because they are thin enough to pass the drum’s holes and stiff enough to wedge in an impeller.

Two habits prevent almost all of it. Check pockets, obviously, but more usefully wash small items and underwear in a mesh bag — it costs a few dollars and stops the things that actually cause this. And run a hot maintenance wash monthly to shift the detergent gel that binds lint into a plug, particularly if you use liquid detergent and cold cycles, which is the combination that builds residue fastest.

What a Proper Diagnosis Checks

The drum emptied and the laundry dealt with before anything else; the drain filter and its housing opened, cleared and felt for hard objects; the pump impeller turned by hand for a jam and for bearing roughness; the pump’s winding measured and the voltage at it confirmed during a live drain step, which separates a dead pump from a control that never energises it; the drain hose pulled out and checked for kinks and internal build-up; the standpipe watched through a drain step to rule out a household blockage; the pressure switch and its chamber and hose checked, since a blocked chamber blocks both functions; the lid switch or door lock tested for confirmation, because the spin is interlocked on it; and only then the belt, clutch, coupler and motor — which are the genuine spin faults and normally present with an empty drum.

Can I still use the machine?
Not usefully, and it is worth stopping. A drum that will not empty means every cycle finishes with soaking laundry and water sitting in the machine, and repeatedly running the pump against a blocked path is how a jam that could have been cleared becomes a pump that has to be replaced. Empty it, clear the filter, and if it still will not drain, leave it alone until it is looked at.

Why is there water in the drum days later?
Either it never drained, or it is coming back. Water that stays put is the fault described on this page. Check that the hose enters the standpipe loosely and that the machine’s own hose loop is at the height the manual specifies.
