Whirlpool Appliance Repair

We repair Whirlpool washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges and microwaves as an independent service company. Whirlpool is the largest single group of appliances we work on, and that has one very practical consequence: the parts are the most available in the industry and the failure modes are the best documented.

  • The group builds five badges on shared platforms — Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana — so a fault on one is a fault we have seen on the others
  • Parts stay in circulation for years after a model is discontinued, which keeps older machines worth repairing
  • Model number over badge, always. Two machines with different names can take the same part, and two Whirlpools can take different ones
  • $99 diagnostic, applied to the repair when you approve it
  • Median finished repair across our whole book: $346, middle half $255 to $418

If you own American appliances there is a good chance you own this group’s engineering, whichever name is on the door. That is the single most useful fact about repairing them: volume means documentation, documentation means diagnosis rather than guesswork, and volume means parts.

Whirlpool appliance down?

Give us the model number and what the machine actually does. The $99 diagnostic is applied to the repair when you approve it.

One Group, Five Badges

Understanding the family makes every repair conversation clearer, because the badge tells you about the cabinet and the model number tells you about the parts.

The group’s badges and what distinguishes them
BadgePositionWhat differs
WhirlpoolThe mainstream coreThe reference platform; everything else is a variation on it
MaytagLaundry-led, heavy-duty framingStronger components where the load is; independent designs before 2006
KitchenAidPremium kitchenInsulation, stainless tubs, third racks, panel-ready doors
JennAirPremium built-inDesign-led kitchen equipment, often flush-fitted
AmanaValueSimpler specification on the same mechanical basis
All of themShared underneathPumps, transmissions, actuators, couplers, controls, defrost parts

The last row is the point. A drain pump, a shifter actuator, a motor coupler, a defrost heater or a lid lock is frequently the same component across several badges, which is why a premium machine should not carry a dramatically higher repair bill for the same fault. The two brand pages for the upper tiers are KitchenAid appliance repair and Maytag appliance repair.

Check the Warranty Before You Pay Anyone

Worth ten minutes before you book us or anybody else. Manufacturers commonly cover specific major components for considerably longer than the general one-year term — sealed-system refrigeration parts are the standard example, and some laundry components carry extended coverage on particular models. The terms differ by model, by year of manufacture and by whether the appliance was registered.

So find the documents and read what is actually covered rather than relying on a rule of thumb. A covered sealed-system fault is a manufacturer conversation. A fan, sensor, pump, lock, coupler or actuator almost certainly is not covered past the first year, and an independent repair is the sensible route. If a fault looks like it falls in the covered category we will tell you rather than quote for it.

What We Work On, and What Usually Fails

  • Washers. Will not spin, will not drain, lid lock, shifter actuator, motor coupler, imbalance. The detail is in Whirlpool washer not spinning
  • Dryers. No heat, will not start, thermal fuse, rollers and belts, and long drying times that are nearly always airflow: dryer not turning on
  • Refrigerators. Warm fresh-food section from a defrost or fan fault, ice makers, leaks: Whirlpool refrigerator not cooling
  • Dishwashers. Not draining and not cleaning, both usually starting at the filter: not draining and not cleaning
  • Ranges and cooktops. Elements, igniters, controls, and oven temperature that drifts — sensor first, element second, control last
  • Microwaves, including over-range. No heat, door and turntable faults, control panels

What the Work Costs

Our own completed jobs, counted the same way everywhere on this site: a completed repair is a job billed above the $99 diagnostic. These figures cover all makes.

Repair cost by category, Neighborville completed jobs
CategoryMedianMiddle halfRepairs
All appliances$346$255 to $418696
Refrigeration$375$250 to $458254
Washers$338$255 to $411170
Dryers$349$280 to $390139
Cooking$359$275 to $45963
Dishwashers$299$250 to $37569
Diagnostic visit$99flatapplied to the repair

Two things that table is good for. It tells you which category you are in before anyone quotes, so a number well outside the middle half deserves the question of which part and which system. And it shows where the money actually goes: dishwashers cheapest, refrigeration dearest, dryers the tightest spread of all because the parts that fail are small and standardised.

The Real Advantage: Parts

This deserves its own section because it changes decisions rather than just being interesting. The group builds a comparatively small number of platforms across a very large number of appliances, so the components that fail most are manufactured in enormous volume — and they stay in circulation for years after a model leaves the showroom.

In practice that means three things. A twelve-year-old machine with an ordinary fault is usually repairable at an ordinary price, where the same age of appliance from a low-volume marque can be a parts hunt with an uncertain ending. A technician can often carry the likely part rather than order it, which is why the model number given at booking turns a two-visit job into one. And the repair-or-replace arithmetic tilts toward repairing, because availability — not age — is the practical limit on fixing an old appliance.

It is still worth confirming availability for your specific model before work is agreed rather than assuming. But as a rule, “it is a Whirlpool” is a point in favour of repair.

Repair or Replace

Three questions, in this order. Is the part available for this model. What class of fault is it — locks, switches, fuses, sensors, actuators, couplers, belts, pumps and defrost components are ordinary work at any age, while washer drum bearings and sealed-system refrigeration are the jobs whose labour makes age matter. And what does the rest of the appliance look like, because a good pump in a machine with a perished seal and rusting racks is money going into a queue of other bills.

Published life expectancies by appliance are in how long refrigerators last, how long washing machines last and how long dryers last — all drawn from published data rather than from opinion.

What a Diagnosis Involves

The model number recorded so the parts list is right; any stored fault history read rather than cleared, since an intermittent fault that will not present itself during a visit is often only visible there; the symptom reproduced where possible so the finding is observed rather than inferred; the free causes eliminated first — filters, hoses, loading, levelling, breaker legs, condenser coils — because a real share of calls end there; then the measurements: sensor resistance against specification, pump windings and the voltage actually reaching them, element and fuse continuity, achieved temperatures against set points, heat rejection and airflow; the mechanical drive checked by hand; and part availability confirmed for your model before anything is agreed.

You get the fault named, the part named, availability confirmed and the total quoted before anything is ordered, with the $99 coming off it when you approve the work.

Maintenance That Matters

  • Do not overload laundry. It is the leading cause of coupler, suspension and bearing wear, and it costs nothing to fix
  • Clean the dryer’s lint filter every load and the whole duct run yearly — that is drying time and fire risk together
  • Dishwasher filter monthly, which prevents poor draining, poor cleaning and the smell in one go
  • Condenser coils twice a year on refrigeration; it is the commonest reason a fridge slowly stops keeping up
  • Run a hot maintenance wash monthly in the washer to shift detergent residue before it binds lint into a plug
  • Wipe door seals on fridges, dishwashers and washers; residue on a sealing face holds a door fractionally open

The Free Checks, by Appliance

Worth twenty minutes before booking anything, because a real share of calls end here and none of these need tools.

What to try first, and why it works
ApplianceTry thisWhy
Washer, will not spinRedistribute the load, check it does not rockImbalance detection abandons the spin on purpose
Washer, will not drainClean the drain filter, check the hose for kinksCoins and bra wires end up in the filter housing
Dryer, deadCycle both halves of the breaker fully off and onAn electric dryer loses one 120-volt leg and stops
Dryer, slowClean the lint filter and the whole duct runAlmost every long-drying complaint is airflow
Fridge, not keeping upVacuum and brush the condenser coilsDust insulates the coil that has to shed the heat
Dishwasher, either complaintWash the filter, run the hot tap firstOne blocked filter starves the wash and the drain

If one of those fixes it, keep the habit rather than treating it as luck — every item on that list is maintenance that prevents the fault recurring. If none of them does, you have eliminated the free causes and a diagnosis starts from a much better place.

Model Numbers: Where to Look

On a top-load washer it is under the lid on the rim or on the back of the console; on a front-loader around the door opening or behind the filter hatch. Dryers carry it inside the door opening on the frame. Refrigerators put it inside the fresh-food compartment, on a side wall, the ceiling, or behind the bottom drawer. Dishwashers have it on the tub edge, visible with the door open. Ranges hide it behind the storage drawer or on the oven door frame.

Photograph the plate rather than transcribing it. These numbers run to a dozen characters and a single wrong digit orders a part that does not fit, which is the commonest reason a repair needs a second appointment. Reading it out when you book is genuinely the most useful thing a customer can do.

Where We Work

Every market we cover, because this is the equipment in most homes rather than in a few: Tampa Bay and the Sarasota coast, South Florida including Boca Raton and Aventura, Naples, Houston, north Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus and Philadelphia. The full list with local numbers is on our service areas page. For built-in premium equipment the relevant pages are Sub-Zero refrigerator repair, Wolf appliance repair and Thermador appliance repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you repair Whirlpool appliances?
Yes — washers, dryers, refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges, cooktops and microwaves — as an independent service company rather than a factory-authorised one. It is the largest single group of appliances we work on. Give us the model number when you book and describe what the machine actually does, because that combination usually identifies the fault before we arrive.
Which brands does Whirlpool build?
Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana are all built by the same group on shared platforms. What differs between the badges is the cabinet and the specification — insulation, racking, finishes, door hardware — rather than the pumps, transmissions, actuators, couplers and controls underneath. That is why a fault on one is usually a fault we have seen on the others, and why the model number matters more than the name on the door.
Are Whirlpool parts easy to get?
The easiest in the industry, and that is the brand’s real practical advantage. Because the group builds a small number of platforms across a huge number of appliances, the components that fail most are made in volume and stay in circulation for years after a model is discontinued. It means a twelve-year-old machine with an ordinary fault is usually repairable at an ordinary price rather than being a parts hunt.
How much does Whirlpool repair cost?
By category, from our own completed jobs: dishwashers median $299, washers $338, cooking $359, dryers $349, refrigeration $375, and $346 across all 696 completed repairs, with the overall middle half between $255 and $418. The diagnostic is a flat $99 and comes off the repair when you approve it. A quote well outside the relevant middle half is worth questioning as to which part and which system.
My Whirlpool fridge is warm but the freezer is cold. Is that expensive?
No, and the cold freezer is the proof: the machine is still making cold, so the sealed system is intact and the fault is in delivering that cold upstairs. On these platforms it is usually the defrost circuit icing the evaporator, or the evaporator fan — both ordinary repairs inside our middle half. There is also a documented defrost pattern affecting particular model families, which is worth checking your model against.
Should I check the warranty first?
Yes, on any appliance under about ten years old. Certain major components — sealed-system refrigeration parts especially — are commonly covered for far longer than the general term, and coverage varies by model, year and registration. Read your own documents rather than a general rule, because it changes who should be doing the work and at whose cost. We will say if a fault looks like it falls in that category.
Is it worth repairing an older Whirlpool?
More often than for most makes, because availability rather than age is the real limit on repairing an old appliance and availability is this group’s strength. The exceptions are the jobs whose labour makes age matter: washer drum bearings and sealed-system refrigeration work on a machine already past its published life expectancy. Everything else — locks, switches, fuses, sensors, pumps, couplers, defrost parts — is ordinary work at any age.
Where do you service Whirlpool appliances?
All of our markets: Tampa Bay and the Sarasota coast, South Florida including Boca Raton and Aventura, Naples, Houston, north Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus and Philadelphia, with local numbers for each on our service areas page. Same-day and next-day slots are usually available, and it is worth mentioning if laundry is stacked or in a closet install, because that affects the access rather than the fault.
