Checking the Dogs Yourself, in Five Minutes
This test costs nothing, needs no tools, and settles the most common complaint before anyone is called out.
- Run a short wash cycle with the lid open if your machine allows it, or watch through the lid switch defeated only if the manufacturer provides that mode. Never reach into a moving tub.
- Watch the top section of a dual-action agitator. It should ratchet: turn firmly in the wash direction, then click freely on the return stroke.
- With the machine off, twist the top by hand. Healthy dogs grip in one direction and slip in the other. Worn dogs slip in both, and the top spins loosely all the way round.
