How a Dryer Actually Dries

Heat is only half the job. A dryer works by drawing room air in, heating it, passing it through the tumbling load where it picks up moisture, and then pushing that wet air out of the house. Every part of that sentence matters, because the machine can be making perfect heat and still fail completely if the air cannot leave.

That is why the complaint on this page almost never means a broken heating element. An element that has failed gives you cold clothes; a duct that has closed up gives you hot, damp ones. If yours are hot and damp, look at the air path first, every time.

1. The outside hood

\n

Run the dryer on high heat and hold a hand at the outside vent termination. You should feel a strong, warm push of air. Weak air, or barely any, means the duct is restricted somewhere between the machine and the wall. No internal part will fix that, and fitting one is money wasted.

While you are there, check the flap opens. Hood flaps stick shut with lint, get painted closed during exterior work, and are a favourite nesting site for birds.

2. The lint screen water test

\n

A screen that looks clean can be sealed by an invisible film left behind by dryer sheets and liquid softener. Take the screen out and pour water onto it over a sink. Water should run straight through. If it beads and sits, the mesh is blocked, and the machine has been trying to breathe through it for months. Wash it with warm water and a little detergent, scrub gently with a soft brush, dry it and refit.

3. The transition hose behind the machine

Pull the dryer forward and look at the hose between the machine and the wall. It is crushed against the wall more often than any other part of the duct system, and a machine pushed hard back into an alcove can flatten that hose to a fraction of its diameter. Flexible plastic and foil versions also sag and hold lint in the sag. Rigid or semi-rigid metal, with the shortest possible run, is the fix.

The Moisture Sensor Nobody Cleans

Most modern dryers have two metal strips inside the drum, usually just inside the door opening. Wet clothes touching both strips complete a circuit, and the machine keeps running until the readings say the load is dry. Softener and dryer-sheet residue coats those strips over time, insulating them, so the machine reads a wet load as dry and shuts down early.

The tell is specific: automatic cycles finish with damp clothes while a timed cycle dries the same load perfectly. If that is your pattern, clean the bars with a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth and run a load. It is a two-minute job and it fixes a surprising share of the calls we get about poor drying.

Duct Design, Not Just Duct Cleaning

Some machines never dried properly from the day they were installed, and no amount of cleaning changes that. Three design faults account for most of it.

How Long a Cycle Should Actually Take

People often ask whether their machine is slow or whether they simply expect too much, so here is the honest yardstick. A normal mixed load in a vented dryer with a clear, short duct should be dry in roughly 40 to 50 minutes. Towels and heavy cotton run longer, an hour or more. Bedding is slower again, because it traps air and water in folds.

Two things move that figure legitimately. Ventless heat-pump machines are slower by design, often 90 minutes or more for the same load, and that is not a fault: they dry at lower temperatures and recover the moisture through a condenser instead of pushing it outside. And any dryer fed by cold intake air, in an unheated garage in winter, will take longer than the same machine in a warm laundry room.
