The practical consequence: if clothes are coming out dirty, raising the soil level is the right lever. If they are coming out wet, that is spin. If the drum barely fills, that is load size or a fill fault. Reaching for the wrong control is why people conclude a machine has stopped cleaning when it has not.

\nIt varies by manufacturer, but the shape is consistent: light shortens the main wash, heavy extends it, and the difference between the two extremes on a normal cycle is typically fifteen to forty minutes. On machines with an automatic setting, a turbidity sensor makes the same decision by reading how dirty the water becomes after the first few minutes.
\nThat sensor is worth knowing about because it can be defeated. Load a machine with items rinsed under the tap first and the sensor reads clean water and shortens the wash, which is the same mistake people make with dishwashers. Put the laundry in as it is, and let the machine judge.

One rule that catches most people out: whites and towels do not automatically need heavy. Soil level is about dirt, not colour or fabric weight. A load of white shirts worn one day each is a light or normal load, and running it on heavy simply grinds the fabric for an extra twenty minutes.
\n\nWhy Higher Is Not Safer
\nExtra agitation has a cost, and it is paid in fibre. Everything that comes off clothes in the wash and the dryer is fabric leaving the garment, which is why colours fade and shirt collars soften over time. A longer wash on a load that did not need it accelerates that with no cleaning benefit, because the detergent finished its work long before the cycle ended.
\nThere is a second cost on modern machines. Longer main washes mean longer periods of mechanical action against the drum, and that loading is carried by the same bearing that decides how long the appliance lasts. \n\nWhen the Setting Is Not the Problem
\nIf clothes are coming out dirty at every soil level, the machine is not cleaning, and no setting will fix that. The usual causes, in the order we find them:

\n\nDetergent Dose Matters More Than Soil Level
\nIf one change is going to improve your wash, it is measuring detergent rather than raising soil level. Too little and minerals in hard water consume the surfactant before it reaches the fabric. Too much and the excess does not rinse away, leaving a film that holds odour and, in front-loaders, feeds the biofilm behind the door seal.
\nDose to three things: the hardness of your water, the size of the load, and how dirty it actually is. High-efficiency machines need high-efficiency detergent and considerably less of it than the cap suggests. The odour side of this is covered in why a washing machine smells musty.
\n\nSoil Level on Dishwashers and Dryers
\nThe same idea appears elsewhere under different names. A dishwasher’s auto programme reads turbidity and sets the wash length in exactly the same way, which is why pre-rinsing plates makes it wash less; that is explained in how long a dishwasher runs. Dryers have no soil concept at all: their equivalent is dryness level, which tells the moisture sensor when to stop, and that is a different control described in what permanent press means on a dryer.
\n\n\nWhy the Setting Exists at All
\nWashing is four things happening at once, and the old trade name for them is the Sinner circle: chemistry, temperature, mechanical action and time. A stain comes out when enough of the four are applied, and the four trade against each other. Less heat can be compensated for with more time. Weaker detergent can be compensated for with more agitation. That is the whole basis of modern efficient washing, which uses cooler water and longer cycles to reach the same result.
\nSoil level is the control that lets you move along the time axis. When you select heavy, you are telling the machine to substitute time for the heat and harsh chemistry that older machines used. That is why a heavy cycle on a modern washer can run well over two hours and still use less energy than a short hot wash on a machine from twenty years ago.
\nIt also explains why raising soil level does not rescue a load washed at the wrong temperature. Body oils and greasy food soils need warmth to release: below about 30°C they simply do not dissolve, however long the drum turns. - Tannin stains — tea, coffee, wine, fruit juice. Rinse immediately in cold water; do not use soap first, which can set some of them \n
- Mud and clay — let it dry completely, brush it off, then wash. Washing wet mud grinds it into the weave \n
- Ink and dye — a laundry cycle will not touch these; treat before washing or accept the mark \n
The general principle: soil level helps with the volume of ordinary dirt, not with the chemistry of a specific stain. Pre-treatment costs nothing and outperforms an extra half hour of tumbling in almost every case.
\n\n\nFront-Loader or Top-Loader: the Setting Behaves Differently
\nOn a top-loader with a centre post, soil level lengthens the agitation phase, and agitation on those machines is vigorous: the post twists the load back and forth through the water. Extra minutes there are extra mechanical work on the fabric, which is why the wear argument is strongest on this design.
\nOn a front-loader, cleaning comes from lifting clothes and dropping them into a small pool of water, over and over. It is gentler per minute, so a longer wash costs the fabric less, and it also means a front-loader genuinely benefits more from extra time on a dirty load.
