Use those as a sanity check rather than a quote. A built-in microwave repair that lands in that range is ordinary. A countertop machine quoted anywhere near it deserves the question everybody should ask: what does the same machine cost new?

\nThese deserve their own section because they are two appliances in one housing. Above the range, the unit is a microwave and an extraction hood, and the hood half fails independently: fan motors, speed switches, grease filters and lamps. None of that has anything to do with the magnetron, and all of it is straightforward work.
\nReplacement is also a bigger job than it looks. The unit is heavy, mounted to a wall plate and the cabinet above, wired in, and either ducted outside or recirculating through a charcoal filter. \nA microwave contains a capacitor that can hold a lethal charge after the machine is unplugged. That is not a caution about voiding a warranty; it is the reason microwave repair is genuinely not a DIY job beyond the obvious external items. Technicians discharge the capacitor before touching anything on the high-voltage side, and there is no safe home equivalent of that step.
\nTwo more rules. Never bypass or defeat a door interlock switch: those switches exist to guarantee the machine cannot run with the door open. And never run the machine empty or with metal inside, which is what burns the waveguide cover and causes the arcing that brings people to this page in the first place.

How a Microwave Actually Works, in One Section
\nUnderstanding the layout makes every price on this page make sense. Mains electricity goes into a transformer that steps the voltage up enormously. That high voltage, smoothed by a capacitor and a diode, drives a magnetron, a valve that turns electrical energy into microwave radiation at a fixed frequency. The energy travels along a waveguide into the cavity, where it agitates water molecules in the food, and the mica cover on the cavity wall is what stops splatter reaching the waveguide.
